Iray Finishes before it is done

I'm making this render in 3Delight but one of the assets works better in Iray. So I tried it in Iray.
The 3Delight render took thirty to forty minutes. The Iray render took 3 hours, finished, but does not look anywhere near finished. There are speckles all over it where it didn't render.
How do I get Iray to complete a render so it looks good?

That render on the right really is what the computer says is a finished render.
I notice the lights don't seem to be working right, and the focus aperature on the camera is out of wack. The background is in focus on the right. About the only thing that is...;)
IRAY finishes when it reaches the threshold set.
The three highlighted are the ones to look at.
You need to consider lighting; Physically based renderers such as IRAY need accurate lighting, and well thought out lighting for them to work correctly. They can take a long time.
If you have a good Nvidia graphics card, then that is a plus; ideally 9 series at the moment. 10 series does NOT, yet at least, work.
(The camera also looks out of focus for the IRAY render. Depth of Field is on?)
Depth of field is on. I do not have a 9 series Nvidia card. Too expensive.
I have tried messing with the time and samples, greatly increasing them both. I set time to 10 hours, but it invariably ends around two to three hours. I set samples to 15000.
I did not try changing the converging ratio. What is that?
Since you set it for 10 hours and it stopped at 2-3 hours then it is likely the number of samples which is what stopped it.
You can increase that, even past 15000. (Use the gear on the right side of the box.)
Also note that you can increase those numbers during the render on the left side of the Render window. If you have draw domw turned on, you can also change the tone mapping during a render without restarting the render.
First question...is everything using Iray specific materials?
If you are not using Iray materials, they are being autoconverted....and the conversion process does not always result in optimal conversions, with skin and very glossy/reflective items not doing very well.
Did you change any of the light settings when you changed from 3Delight to Iray? It's not just the materials, the lights will frequently need at least some tweaking — in extreme cases, you will need to rebuild your entire lighting setup — when you render in Iray. You can't just change the render engine setting and go, because you have changed the render engine, and the two are very, very different.
I don't generally do a lot with Iray so I have very few things with materials designed specifically for Iray.
As for the lights, I use the basic "photo studio" lights that many characters come with for most of my lighting. It is generally easy and gets a good look.
I'm still playing around with all of this and trying to figure out how to do things the best.
Thanks much for the info you have given me so far. It gives me a good idea of where to start thinking. ;)
Can you please post screen shots of all your Iray settings please?
Thank you
Also, to properly set the DOF in your scene, use the Perspective cam to view the camera you are using from the side and you can adjust your focal distance and DOF from there.
