Why Are Anime Figures Impossible in DAZ?

This has been a discussion that has been going on for some time, but I still have to ask, why is it so hard to make a good, decent 3D Anime figure that works with DAZ Studio?

http://www.comipo.com/en/ This program has the kind of anime figures I'm looking for...But everything else about the program is extremely lacking and sub par compared to DAZ Studio's functions.

Yeah there's third-party content like "Anime Doll" and "Kumuru" for Genesis 2, but they're Third party nature means they don't always work well with DAZ  (Anime Doll in particular has issues if you try using the "Growing Up" Morphs with the figure and head that cause the neck to elongate).

I am incredibly frustrated that so far, despite all of the amazing things made and created for the Gen 3 figures, that THESE bug-eyed abominations are the closest thing DAZ can make for "anime figures"  http://www.daz3d.com/sf-anime-character-builder

I just really want to know why is making actual anime-like figures like the ones in crappier 3D programs like Comipo that work with DAZ Studio (pretty much the Gold Standard in 3D Shaping and Posing programs) so blasted hard?

  • Highly stylized figure and head shapes don't always play nice with things like Growing Up, primarily because those shapes are significantly different from the base shape that such utility morphs are designed specifically to work with. Even Lady Littlefox ran into some issues while working on Star! for Genesis 3 Female, mainly with respect to the eyes.

Looking at ComiPo, it works better than DazStudeio because they are, basically, stickers on general shapes. Once you start getting fully 3D forms and eyes the breakdown happens.

Aiko 7 is out, and the male counterpart has been mentioned as coming soon.

There is also previous versions of the anime characters, from original Aiko, and Hiro 1 through 5.

Or, you can make them yourself, by using facial and body morphs. It's not hard, just time-consuming.

Yeah, I've seen Aiko 7, she's a great model, but doesn't look anime. The biggest issue with the Aiko and Hiro models have been that they look more like bug eyed bratz dolls over anime heads. Aiko 7 looks like they just gave up all together and just made a new Asian styled figure.

Honestly at this point I may have to make my own, save for the fact I don't know the first thing about 3D modeling.

Just out of curiousity, what are your thoughts about Star!? She's now here at Daz3d and I was wondering if that would fit your purposes?

Honestly Star's head is perfect for my needs, the only issue is her very skinny and stylized body. If there was a way to transplant her head onto a Gen 2 or 3 body with all of the shaping and body type options available to them Star would work perfectly.

Unfortunatley, atm with it's 1 stylized body fits all model, her uses are very limiting.

The frustrating thing is that, a long time ago, DAZ DID have a decent anime styled head as I've found out.

    http://www.daz3d.com/belbel

BelBel looks PERFECT! But her head is part of a VERY VERY outdated Aiko model, so is utterly unusuable with Gen 2 or 3 models. This drove me nuts when I found Bel Bel. Someone already made a good anime head but never bothered updating it for future Aiko generations? They were satisfied with the bug-eyed Bratz Dolls that Aikos 4-6 ended up being?

Gah, why does this anime head figure search have to be so aggrevating.

It is the norm for head and body shapes to be seperated. So will likely be the same with Star 7 when she appears; I hope at least.

I can ask Lady Littlefox to see if this is the case, and post here once I find out; I suspect it will be possible, but it would be nice to know for certain.

Edit: Just heard from and yes, she does have the separate head and body morphs.

Daz did not make those, my partner and I did. An artist has two choices: 1. Make a custom figure that looks like what you want, like Kururu. It cannot then use current skins or clothes, limiting its audience sharply. 2. Take an existing figure like G3F and try to sculpt it into an anime figure, so it can use new clothes and skins. Spend a month working on it, have it barely sell, struggle to pay rent that month and then have a rude stranger call it a "bug-eyed abomination" on the forum. Is it any wonder not many artists try?

Alright, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for Star 7 sure! Thanks! So We'll be able to us Star 7's head on Gen 3 bodies?

I'm sorry, I didn't mean anything personally by it. Even if I don't care for how these figures look, I was rude. However, I feel like I'm entitled to my opinion that these figures ended up not really being anime and more like some creepy imitation of anime. I'm sorry that these figures ended up not selling well and I ended up unintentionally rubbing salt in the wound with my frustration over the lack of decent anime head options in DAZ.

Thank you.  Your criticism is not necessarily wrong; the "wallet vote" pretty much agrees with you.  And if LadyLittlefox manages to pull off a great-looking working anime head for G3, more power to her.  She's a very talented artist and I have the greatest respect for her work.

It's always a good rule of thumb that when you submit a support ticket, you're talking to a corporation; when you post on the forum, you're talking to people.

Have you seen Anime Doll for Genesis 2 Female on Renderosity. It's a rather nice morph (actually GeoGraft).

Yeah I've used it, and mentioned it above. It's a decent figure, but it doesn't play nice with a number of morphs (specifically the Growing Up morphs) so any attempts to change the base body outside of the usual morph sliders causes the neck to freak out and elongate. If I could find a way to get around this issue Anime Doll would work great.

For what it's worth, SickleYield, it might be some interaction between anime and Genesis 3. Only reason I haven't picked it up is because I don't have much interest in Genesis 3.

I purchased it for the extra DNA; as well, I really like a few of the preset bodies, very useful for doing some stylized characters. I was hoping there'd be a male version, but it sounds like I'm out of luck. sad

Thanks for making the effort, it's appreciated.

    Good news.

Not really my stype, but I do like to add small amounts of a character's morph to see what it does; who knows I may jump off the wagon (again).

Actually I liked them and bought them; I don't use often, but for me it is possible to get something close. Personally Manga is a 2D artform; it doesn't translate well to 3D; other's will perhaps disagree, but it will eventually change and develope and become a new art style and/or in some way influence the pre-existing one.

There are quite a few items to help assist you in making your own, or making them into G1 and G2

There are also the anime shaders to consider

this one ould look really good with the shaders on it http://www.daz3d.com/karynna-for-aiko-6 and is on sale at the time of posting this.

Nicstt: I somewhat agree, with the proviso that I think there's room for using 3D software to render a very 2D-style art (as is obvious from a lot of my recent experiments).

But I think a lot of anime stylized looks appear really weird on shaded 3D figures.

Biggest problem is that to make it look really professional, I should probably, effectively, draw most of the lines over to look less sloppy.

If you are looking for 3D manga-style characters, look into MikuMikuDance.  It is possible to import the meshes into DAZ (though rigging is a pain) and there are some conversion utilities around.  But there are always going to be limitations when trying to duplicate 2D stylized work into a 3D format.  Some stuff just does not translate well (and I'm not just talking the language!)

Aiko 3 is still in considerable use.  So is A4.  And since A4 can use pretty much all of V4's wardrobe (with some fits or fixes here and there) that is a considerable amount of content.  I still use both.  It just depends on how much work you are willing to put in to make it into what you want.

You can also get legacy morphs or use GenX2, so I can make A4 G2F characters

That looks good, and I'm not actually a fan of the black lines; they should be more subtle - and this is a generalisation in which I mean everyone's.

For me, including something should add some aesthetic to the piece of art, not be merely because it's always been done that way.

Yours looks great without them; will adding them improve the look? Perhaps in subtle amounts, but not everywhere the art-form has traditionally placed them. Then again that's my opinion, and the art-world has more opinions than people on the planet. :)

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,011

Without which? A little confused. ;)

It really depends on the look you are going for, I suppose. Heavier lines remind me more of morning cartoons, while lighter, sketchier look reminds me more of, oh, Heavy Metal or something.
