Kids 7

  • I will chime in briefly in that i have been trying to create a realistic looking 10-12 yo. character so far, trough 3 generations of figures, and have spent far too much time and money on morph sets and textures, and base figures to do it. most seem either as was stated earlier in the tread "creepy" or just far too cartoonish for what im looking for. i do not presume to criticize any PAs products. Art is infinitely subjective. perhaps it is meerly a lack of skill on my own part at the root of it, But to quote U2, i still havent found what I'm looking for. The above creations by Angel-Wings are pretty much the closest thing to realism I've seen in a kid's figure, and would snap them up immediately. beautiful work. A set of DAZ base figures that match the adult base figures for realism, seems unlikely at best at this stage. the closest i think they came may have been julie/justin in generation 5. Tween Julie 7 is quite adorable, but still far too stylized for realism, and her morph is so strong that it seems to dominate rather than blend. i fear realistic kids are seen more as a taboo that DAZ would rather not indulge in, for fear of some sort of backlash.

I have been watching this thread. I do agree that having a base Kids 7 would be great.  I really haven't had an interest in kids but this thread and Angel-Wings fantastic renders have got my creative juices flowing.  I have the Growwing up morphs but haven't touched it until now.  Making kids is not really that difficult though. A little tweeking of the poses and some clothes and hair is a challange but I made these with very little effort. Not fully rendered but just enough to see if I could do it.

Those are some very nice renders ALLIEKATBLUE and Angel - Wings.

With the Growing Up morphs and textures, as well as the Tween characters and 3D Universes stylized kids, I think G3 is the best figure for kids since V3/M3 and the Millennium Preschoolers and Young Teens. Unfortuneately we still have the problem of not enough kid friendly clothes. Kids 4 had plenty of clothes, but as was already mentioned, the K4 base looked wrong. If DAZ released a Kids 7, we would get several outfits, some poses, and characters with appropriate textures.

Boys clothes are fairly easy. Most male clothes work well on the Growing Up morphs and there is not a lot of difference between kids styles and some adult styles. Some boys pajamas, shorts, and maybe winter coats would be nice, but jeans, tee shirts, and school uniforms are pretty well covered. Girls styles on the other hand can be significantly different from adult styles. There are dress and shirt styles worn by young girls which are not worn by adults. Also, it takes a lot of work to fit adult clothes to younger girls.

As far as children not being worth a PA's time, I find it interesting that Zev0 has made the Growing Up morphs for all three generations of Genesis and even added the Growing Up merchant resource texture sets for Genesis 3. In fact, if a PA wanted to make a child character, Zev0's resources could be an excellent starting point. If Kids 7  required the Growing Up morphs, I wouldn't object at all, and it might increase sales for Zev0.

  • @Zylox, I think Zev0 saw a niche that needed filled, much as SickleYield has done with her "Faces of" series of morphs, and was willing to take a risk that other PAs may not be. And ultimately that's what it comes down to; PAs that choose to make products that don't sell as well as others do usually are willing to take more of a risk.

  • Adorable renders ALLIKABLUE! What bases did you use? Mine all seem to have that wierd adult vibe retained when i make them. As i said perhaps i simply lack the talent and perspective to create what Im trying for. love seeing everyone's wonderful works here though! Very lovely, and inspiring, thank you all for sharing!

  • My apologies ALLIEKATBLUE! should have checked my spelling before last post. Sorry.

It's ok @wickedxxangel. So I really don't have any particular base.  What I did was look for a sweet face, not to angular and fooled around with some character skins with the no make-up option but glossy lips. I have sooo many charaacters so my favorite to blend in is any P3D or Thorne characters to get a pouty lip and big eyes.  After applying the growing up morph I just  fooled around with the head shape and breast morphs. Add a sweet expression and that's what I came up with.  There are a lot of clothing that can be adapted for a child, just look for some jeans and t-shirt stuff and some dresses that don't have a low cut neckline. Surely, It would be easier to have a plain ole Kids 7 base package, I would get the pro bundle just for the base figure and some clothing. But just like I didn't wait around for black character once the Monique and Darius for G3 came out, I just dial them in to any existing character I have and I can make my own.  I find this whole 3D art to be a challange to my own creativity and I like what I am able to come up with on my own. But still, a Kids 7 would be great but until then, the growing up set is wonderful to use.

Well, it was always my opinion based on what is available as freebies and just generally running into images on the web that toon style characters are much more popular than realistic characters, In particular in the DAZ/Poser 3D worlds and of those I felt that 3DU's are far & away the most popular.

However, that's just my opinion. I do know to date that 3DU models have been the only DAZ/Poser models I have seen and recognized in an internationally syndicated TV show and that was an episode of 'Syd the Sceance Kid' featured a big gang of Toon Generations One characters walking along the suburban streets once. They performed admirably, although I disagreed with their choice of shaders used to create the animation it could be they didn't have the house power to do a fully claymation style iRay or 3DL style animation even with their big budget and ability to hire expertise. There may be more instances but you'll have to forgive me for not watching every episode of Syd the Science kid - however you can blame that though as much on my local affiliate incessantly repeating the same episodes than on Syd the Sceance Kid being bad television.

I suppose it is not surprising to see more images based on free or low cost figures. I suspect that the majority of peole who use DS and DAZ3d products are hobbyists (though doubtless a few professional media artists do too). Your comments on Syd the Science Kid seem to correctly illustrate what is the probable reason why we don't see Genesis 3 figures more in movies or commercial products. Simply, if the company has a  sufficiently high budget they can and will afford 3d figures, animation systems, lighting and textures systems that are way beyond the hobby market. Professional level 3d animation can be much more expensive and take longer than filming with real people.

Getting back to reality for us here and now, the Genesis 3 figure is at the top of the hobbyist market. It could be even more fun to use if the mesh was much higher resolution (for us amateur morphers at least).

Accepting that we (most of us here) are amateurs and not working as professionals in the 3d animation industry, we still do strive for quality in our renders and/or animations. That quality might be in making beautiful toon or anime renders, but many prefer realism. A fairly high degree of realism is possible with current Genesis 3 figures in DS, at least for adult and teenage figures, but one has to admit that there is a gap in the market for those who would like to render realistic babies and young children. It may not be a huge market in terms of sales but it is a gap. As for the reasons why this is so, I suppose the people best able to answer this question are DAZ3d themselves. For the rest of us it is limited to opinions and speculation.

    DAZ3d, any comments?

You would have to ask them.   Maybe file a ticket and send it as a product suggestion directly to them.

Ticket submitted. I await a reply.

I now doubt very much that there will ever be a Kids 7 package. In reply to my enquiry, the DAZ3d Marketing Department simply referred me to Zev0s "Growing up for genesis 3" morph packs. Presumably they consider this sufficient for their clients who would like to render realistically proportioned kids. I am not knocking Zev0's morph packs. I have used his morphs, but I always need to do additional work in Zbrush. It looks like this will continue to be the case. As for the HD baby, I assume that this is also a lost cause.

Can't say I'm surprised, though it's not fair to folks that want a simpler workflow, or those potential PAs that actually want to make kids and not adults.

  • Hi bravo, I'm glad to hear you have made a character you are happy with using the existing morphs. Would you care to share a pic or two to show us. In view of the nature of the figure perhaps you should show the figure with just a plain white skin, preferably with mesh lines (Wire Shaded in the DrawStyle options menu). Seeing the mesh lines on the figure may allow folks to indicate where their might be a distortion problem when it comes to skin textures and even clothing.

Daywalker is right, we don't have access to sales figures, so we can't know how many copies of the various iconic figures have been sold. I don't think any PAs or DAZ3d have or would tell us that information. But an indication of relative expected sales of an iconic Kids 7 verses the average of the other iconic 7 figures from DAZ3d would be nice and might put this issue to bed.

I suspect that Nelson is right in saying most PAs just model what they want to and then see if the sales are good or not. However DAZ3d is in a different position to it's PAs. DAZ3d could either commission a PA directly for  Kids 7 figure or have its own modellers make Kids 7. The fact that they have not yet done so says something, I'm just not sure what.

Sorry for being incredibly behind on this. Work has been a killer! And DAZ3D forums isnt really the best social platform ????. I will add some pics of their topology later today but honestly I've yet to run into issues with clothing, skin, or hair.

I also have a male but it was so identical in topology I didn't bother to take any screenshots, but if y'all still want to see them I can.

  • Looking nice.  So, what is the youngest age this could be dialed down to?  Say, 1 or 2 years old?  Or would that be done with a seperate package?

Turning off the restrictions i can make them the size of an infant however the proportions are all wrong. Using additional morphes i could probably make it work but would need to experiment. As is, I think 2 is the smallest. As it is, I think I had to use the head morph and 200+ body morph to get it just right. I don't remember so I will have to check.
  • I suspect 2 is probably as young as I'd ever need it.  Presumably infant to 1 or 2 would work better as a dedicated Baby7 morph pack.

I've said this once. I'll say it again.. Low sells on kids stuff has nothing to do with the fact that nobody buys it or likes to render child like figures. It has everything to do with the cheap, generic, toonish people.. When you stack a K4 next to a V4... They arnt compatable because the K4 is a hidious little monster, and unrealistic... and just straight creepy looking... it ruins the render... If a K4 was on the same level of quality as a V4.. sells would increase dramaticly.. When you half ass a product.. Expect half assed sells.

Actually I'm rather amazed at the number of people who will post a shot of a Victoria 7 Gen 3 character next to a K4 kid, and say, "see they look completely compatible",  when the results looks like Bob Hoskins in a scene with Roger Rabbit.  So one has to take into account that some people simply don't have the artistic eye to tell the difference; even though they can spot when a hair product looks photoshoped  and not realistic because it  doesn't have the requisite amount of sheen, or gravity isn't  affecting a spit curl in just the right way.

    Bravo,

Thanks for showing us the results of all your hard work. I would like to make a couple of constructive comments. You indicate that this is a 4 year old character, in which case I would expect the head to be somewhat larger. The second issue I'm not so certain about, but it seems to me that the limbs (at least the arms) are a bit long for a 4 year old.

I do think you've got the hands and feet in correct proportion. Kids have short fingers :) Keep up the good work.

Zev0 just released a new teen figure for his Growing Up morphs. I want to encourage Zev) to continue creating characters like this, so I plan to buy it this weekend.

You might want to consider going to your local library or college library and checking out artist reference books. They can give you a good idea of how the proportions for arm and leg length as well as head size vary at different ages. Another reference might be stock photography sites.
