GoZ - updating to ZBrush 4R8 - DAZ Studio 4.9.4.117

Update / Edit:

If you are experienced with updating Zbrush you should not run into any issues when upgrading to ZBrush 4R8.

GoZ is still working with ZBrush 4R8 - DAZ Studio 4.9.4.117.

- - -

Edit: 2017-07-08:

Rephrased step 3b) and added step 3c)

to make it more clear that optional  steps should be performed if issues still remain.

- - -

Edit: 2017-07-19:

Most frequent cause of error:

Make sure to set the proper path to your new ZBrush install location in the DIM before you install GoZ.

compare screenshot of step 5)

ZBrush 4.7 used the path

C:\Program Files\Pixologic\ZBrush 4R7

ZBrush 4.8 uses the path

C:\Program Files\Pixologic\ZBrush 4R8

- - -

If you did run into some issues and GoZ is not working anymore for some reason hopefully this thread helps you clean up the installation.

In general:

- Different versions of DAZ Studio (like public build and general releases) have different installers for their own GoZ version.

- Whichever GoZ version was installed last determines which DAZ Studio version will be used.

- - -

-> Afaik there is currently no way to use mulitple versions of DAZ Studio in combination with GoZ

For that reason I deceided to only install the "Public Build" versions of DAZ Studio to stay up to date.

I do not install any additional "General Release" versions to lower the complexity and potential errors when using GoZ and other plugins.

- - -

If GoZ does not work after upgrading Zbrush, DAZ Studio or GoZ:

1) Uninstall all DAZ Studio versions.

2) Uninstall all GoZ versions.

3a) Uninstall the older Zbrush version

If you are asked if you want to delete the GoZ folder confirm this with "yes".

3b) Optional: Double check if all files and folders in C:\Users\Public\Pixologic were deleted.

3c) Optional: Manually delete all files and folders in C:\Users\Public\Pixologic

4) Reinstall and activate the new Zbrush version

5) Update the path to your new ZBrush version in the DAZ Install Manager DIM

At the time of writing you can not yet select ZBrush 4R8 in the pulldown menu. Just select 4R7 and direct it to your 4R8 path.

6) Reinstall the DAZ Studio application you want to  work with in DIM.

7) Reinstall the GoZ version for that DAZ Studio version in DIM.

Optional steps to confirm proper installation:

8) Open DAZ Studio. Add a cube. Use GoZ.

9) In ZBrush create morph on the cube. Use GoZ.

10) In the ZBrush pop up window confirm the paths for other software with GoZ support.

-> If done correctly the proper DAZ Studio version will now open with the morph located in the parameters tab.

Edited 2017 07 08:

If you still run into issues after going trough all the standard steps

-> follow steps 1) to 10) again and this time include the optional steps 3b) and 3c).

compare this post for more details about the optional steps:

    Thank you.

You got me worried as I did update ZBrush last night to 4R8 but didn't uninstall GoZ or Daz Studio.

    Lucky me everything works fine.

Many thanks for this post, I was also having the same problem
    And now everything is working!

  • I keep getting the "unable to connect to ZBrush, check the installation" whenever I try to send an item to ZBrush. I followed each of your steps, but I don't know what to do.

You seem to have asked the same question in different threads.

Without any screenshots or recordings taken during the installation and shared on the forum we can only speculate about the cause of your issue.

My guess is similar to what Richard pointed out in the other thread.

    compare:

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/2608706/#Comment_2608706

After step 3a) there may be some remaining files in

    C:\Users\Public\Pixologic

    which interfere with your installation

    - - -

I followed each of your steps, but I don't know what to do.

Did you also follow the optional steps?

3b) Optional: Double check if all files and folders in C:\Users\Public\Pixologic were deleted

I called step 3b) "optional" because this should be done as a last resort if following all other steps is not resolving the issue.

If there are any remaining files and folders in C:\Users\Public\Pixologic  after step 3b) delete them all manually before step 4).

    Edited:

I now added this manual deletion as step 3c) in the first post.

Maybe it would suffice to only delete some specific files located in

    C:\Users\Public\Pixologic

Maybe for different users different files are causing an issue with GoZ.

However, without any more specific GoZ error messages the approach to delete every file and subfolder seems to be the quickest option.

    - - -

    But be aware:

    - this clears the cache of your GoZ projects

    - this may affect other 3rd party software that also provides their own GoZ installation that is not (anymore) handled by Pixologic.

You may have to reinstall the software that provides those GoZ versions as well after step 10).

    - - -

    - - -

    In general:

    - If you run into any issues during the installation restart the troubleshooting at step 1)

    - include optional steps if you left them out on your first try

    - skiping steps or performing steps in a different order can break GoZ functionality as well

    Example:

first installed 4R8 -> GoZ was working

then uninstalled 4R7 -> GoZ was not working anymore.

-> restart at step 1) of troubleshooting

Thank you both for helping me, I really appreciate it.

I don't have a GoZProjects folder or any other folder under Public\Pixologic besides one that's called GoZApps. Is that the same thing as GoZProjects?

It goes GoZApps\DAZStudio64\ and then there are four applications:

    GoZ_Info

    GoZBrushToDAZStudio

    GozLocateDAZStudio

    QTCore4.dll

No, GoZApps is separate - there will usually be three GoZsomething folders in the Pixologic folder, GoZProjects is the only one I'd feel comfortable removing in toto.

Am I missing some files for the plugin to work? I have two under DazStudio for the plugin, but that's it.

It may be that the other folders are not being created because GoZ won't run - do you have any other applications with a GoZ plug-in or support?

I don't believe so. I am going to try reinstalling ZBrush.

Edit: okay it works now after I reinstalled ZBrush. I didn't have either GoZProjects of GoZZBrush folders. Thank you both for the help again.

I get this when ever I export a morph from Zbrush through goz.

This message appears whenever the point count of the object you exported does not match the point count of the mesh you are importing.

    - - -

    1) Make sure to always export from DAZ Studio to Zbrush at base resolution

In DAZ Studio the base resolution is SubDivision Level Zero.

By default most DAZ Studio objects load at SubDivision Level 1.

-> Dial it down to SubDivision Level 0 before exporting to ZBrush

    - - -

    2) If you want a simple workflow in ZBrush only use brushes that do not change the point (vertex) count

Example: The Move Brush just moves the existing points around

    or

    3) If you feel comfortable with a more advanced workflow and want to sculpt in ZBrush with other brushes that do change the point (vertex) count

    - keep the imported base mesh as separate subtool (target mesh)

    - create a copy of the imported base mesh

    - use any workflow you want to alter the copied base mesh (source mesh)

    - use project all to transfer the details from the altered source mesh to the original target mesh

(use masks to help hiding areas that should not be affected by the projection)

    - make sure the updated target mesh with the original point (vertex) count is selected before using GoZ to bring it back to DS

I did that and I still get that message.

I still do not think that this error message is triggered by a faulty update process to ZBrush 4R8.

Place the following search term in google and you will find plenty of threads about that error message:

site:daz3d.com GoZ the topology of the object has changed

    https://www.google.ch/search?q=site%3Adaz3d.com+GoZ+the+topology+of+the+object+has+changed&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-GB:IE-Address&ie=&oe=&gfe_rd=cr&ei=Y4ZrWaeJDYrZ8AfVwKKgCQ

    1. Send over a DAZ3D primitive like a cube and create a simple morph with the move brush in ZBrush to check if GoZ is basically working.

    2. Try the whole process again with the HW3D Big Cat and this time make screenshots or a video recording of every step.

Take a very close look at the "Active Point Count" in ZBrush and observe if there are any changes to it during your workflow.

Does the HW cat have any attachments?

Is there a way to check if the transfer from Daz Studio to ZBrush was successful?

After clicking on "Send to ZBrush", I checked the DS error logs, and there are no messages related to ZBrush or GoZ.

It would be nice if DS generated a "GoZ transfer to ZBrush was successful" message to tell me if it actually worked or not.

It would also be nice to see where Daz Studio "thinks" my ZBrush application is located.  Clicking on Edit -> Preferences -> Bridges shows no such options for ZBrush.  Even if DS won't let me edit it, I still would like to see it.

You diodn't answer the question very clearly - but you need to make sure that what you are morphing in ZBrush is just the base figure, no add-ons or GeoGrafts and at base resolution.

  • Yes I did. I posted screenshots that show the base resolution and I morphing just the base figure.

  • Richard HaseltineRichard Haseltine Posts: 102,376

And you're sure it is the base - the whiskers, for example, are part of the base?

  • Absolutely.

Not many ideas left. To clarify:

    @ robert

    A) Do you get this error message with every single object you try to send back and forth between DAZ Studio and ZBrush over GoZ?

    or

    B) Do you only get this error message with the "HW3D Big Cat"?

    - - -

-> C) if you are not sure try to create a morph for a different

new object that you have not yet sent with GoZ

    in DAZ Studio

    - make sure that the Object is either at Base Resolution or at SubDivision Level 0 in the parameters tab

    - make sure that the object that you want to create the morph for is selected in the scene tab

    - click on GoZ

    in ZBrush

    - create a morph with the Move Brush

    - make sure that the object with the morph is at the lowest ZBrush Subdivision level SDiv 1 in the geometry tab

    - make sure that the object with the morph is selected in the subtool tab

    - click on GoZ

Does this also trigger the error message?

GoZ is still working with ZBrush 4R8 - DAZ Studio 4.9.4.117.

It works from ZBrush to Daz, but not Daz to Zbrush, as far as I can tell.  Can't investigate further, as no error messages are generated from the Daz side.

    @ Ryzan

Your problem is probably a different one than that of Robert.

Yes, there are no problem specific error messages that provide a detailed clue what is wrong.

Yes, many different persons are having many different issues how their GoZ installation is not working.

But currently I only know of one way to solve all those issues:

a complete uninstallation of all involved software and starting again from scratch:

    1. Perform steps 1) to 10) as described in the first post of this thread.

If GoZ still is not working:

    2. Perform steps 1) to 10) and include the optional steps to manually delete GoZ related files

    - - -

It would also be nice to see where Daz Studio "thinks" my ZBrush application is located.  Clicking on Edit -> Preferences -> Bridges shows no such options for ZBrush.  Even if DS won't let me edit it, I still would like to see it.

Yes, good idea. it might help to also see an indication of the paths to the software .exe files all those bridge plugins link to in DAZ Studio.

Maybe some people then would actually check the paths and realize that  they forgot to update the path to the new ZBrush version in the DIM.

It would be nice if DS generated a "GoZ transfer to ZBrush was successful" message to tell me if it actually worked or not.

It may be worth a try to write a support ticket if you feel like this would help your situation.

If GoZ is working everything seems pretty obvious:

    - the proper ZBrush version is opening up automatically

    - the object is allready selected

    - draw it in the viewport

    - hit "edit" or use the shortcut "T".

But yes, I can see how this all can be very confusing when the installation of GoZ was not successful and new users are confused

    - if they are doing the wrong workflow

    or

    - if the installation is faulty

    - - -
