Genesis 8 PowerPose templates are encrypted (.dse). Seriously?

Yes, they are. Plus they've updated the file format and didn't bother to document it, as always.
- See, we've updated PowerPose and made templates for our revolutionary new figure, Genesis 8...
- Oh, what a nice colorful face... but can it be used with Genesis 3 ?..
- That will require some little changes in...
- OMG! NOoo! People would think that Genesis 8 is not that revolutionary new! And what about previous generations ?..
- Some improvements are possible, in principle...
- OMG! OMG! Catastrophic! We need a solution!..
- Maybe, encryption?...
- YES! YES!!.. This will keep those eggheads' hands off.
With the latest appearance of encrypted PC freebie it seems like DAZ management is obsessed by WannaCry's business model. Again.

So.. what was the problem?
And I installed Power Pose itself through DIM, not the encrypted way... so I really have no idea what you're talking about.
I believe what A-Sennov is refering to is how the templates are DSE (encrypted) meaning the all the work others and myself had done for the last five or so years to keep Powerpose alive and working with Genesis, G2, G3, and other figures, and add ons (wings, tails, the G3 centaurs was in process) not to mention those who have the original templates from when Powerpose was first introduced to Studio and had close to 40 templates. All those are now cleared out from the slate.
Useless.
Examples of current figure problems are some what minor but still significant. G2's the toes don't bend but only for the pinky and big toe of the right foot. For G3, the arms don't bend. When a legacy based figure is loaded, the speed in which the poseing for turned a limb is incredibly fast. 4,000% rotation is not unheard of in just a light turn.
I'm still receiving requests for updates on the Powerpose program but becuase of the DSE layout. I'm 'out of a job', which is fine, I've wanted powerpose updated for some time. I got it, I just would like to see a faster turn around and loyalty to the die hard users that have stuck with the plug in all these years.
PA's, hobbiests and futzers alike appear to have used this for years. (7400 downloads from my DA account) It's not as new as people think.

PC freebie is not encrypted, I also installed the templates via DIM.
The encryptation of this weeks PC freebie was an error and was corrected within a few hours of release. So, it is no longer encrypted. Also the templates are installable through DIM
The complaint is that they are version locked to the latest version of DAZ Studio and no longer editable (if that's a word).
So, can they be edited or not and is there a work around to code them differently?
DAZ?... please don't UPDATE us out of functionality. That is just crappy.
And all too typical. I really don't think any of the programmers at DAZ actually use the program except to test it for whatever they're working on right this instant. The DS 3 to 4 changeover was a clusterrhymeswithduck of epic proportions that killed dozens of my products, most of which never were fixed, and ever since I've always dreaded upgrading from one version to the next. Heck, I bought the V8 bundle and still haven't used it because I still haven't upgraded DS to the new version yet, though that was because I was worried about losing GenX2 and LightManager.
No, these cannot be edited. The idea of enabling (but not forcing) encryption is to make them more attractive to developers, but that won't stop people from creating their own templates (if you look at the change Log you will see that editing features are being worked on) - whether developer encypt their files will be up to them, as it is for script authors now.
We know that Genesis 3 templates are in fact being worked on.
Older templates should still work, if properly set up, and in fact may show additional features that the previous version of PowerPose didn't support. If you have templates that aren't working that may be a bug, so please open a support ticket.
Er... beginning with Genesis, none of DAZ's own templates were ever properly set up to begin with as they left out one of the two abdomen joints, and while there used to be templates for the original MIl Dragon, there's been zip-all out of DAZ ever since for the animal world.
duplicate post - dang interwebs
I was thinking of PDSmith's updated templates
It's a matter of conflics. I want to bring the level of standard as set by the new Powerpose update for G8 and bring it to Genesis, G2, and the legacy figures as well as support the non-figures. Currently G3 conflict with my released updates and the new Powerpose....my version of the update will be released shortly to support those older figures but not have features I would like them to carry.

I'm pretty sure that you are wrong about the developers. As for DS3/DS4, are you talking of content or plug-ins? I am aware of a few things that broke (old saved scenes, though opening and saving in an intermedairy version fixed that, and some issues in Shader Mixer shaders come to mind) but not vast swathes.
Richard, this is illogical - closed formats never encourage devs, this is by the nature of closed format. We don't see any shortage of characters in the store and they all are in open DSON format.
I could imagine PAs to encrypt their files but not DAZ. How anybody could know WHAT to write into files when the base ones are encrypted. Add the general absence of docs. Or there again will be 'elite' devs with sacral knowledge ?
No, they don't show any additional features as they all are version 2 and new features require version 3 according to Change log. Which is kept secret.
Good to know that editor mode is under development but my experience tells me that editors are much more complex compared to viewers. Templates are XML, editable by any text editor, backgrounds are .png, editable by any image editor. We might have Genesis 3 templates ALREADY.
Little explanation for those who wonder what is all of this about.
Previously PP templates were located in <DAZStuio dir>/plugins/PowerPose. There were two types of files: .png - background images, .dsx (DAZ Studio XML) - templates, body dynamics. Templates.dsx is the root configuration file.
Now each figure may have it's own set of templates which is good. They are to be located in /data/<vendor>/<figure>/<genre>/Tools/PowerPose directory. For example, in case of Genesis 8 it's /data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 8/Female/Tools/PowerPose. The general structure of files is the same with exception: .dsx became .dxe (DAZ XML Encrypted) and no more readable and manually editable.
So if you want to take advantage of new features in PowerPose for your own figure (my case) or improve support for old one (PDSmith's case) - you're out of luck.
Really? Because besides the afore-mentioned loss of templates from PowerPose and the disappearance of Figure Mixer, I had a couple of hundred dollars worth of products stop working in the 3 to 4 changeover, including:
Lightdome 2
PWSketch
Hand Grip
The Water Fall Tool
Figure Setup Tools
Moviemaker (and it’s various packs)
Motionmaster
Moodmaster
Animated Textures
Camera Pointer
PointLight Lightsphere
Spotlight Pointer
Surface Mask Creator
Plus 3D Content Database 2 died at the same time, though that was due to the website being changed.
And let’s not even get into how many 3DL shaders I’ve had to give up since DAZ added Iray…
the Waterfall tool works
I did an iray render with it not that long ago
is the encryption of the templates in any way related to a future facial mocap plugin I wonder?
There were on/off issues with dForm based tools - such as the Waterfall tool - in DS 4 (and possibly in DS3, I can't recall the exact sequence). Most of the others are plug-ins - and Figure Setup tols are included with DS 4 Pro.
The use of .dxe was to show it is possible, to give vendors confidence that they could protect their content. That doesn't mean people can't save .dsx versions of their own settings if they wish. But yes, if you want to set up a new template you have to do the setting up - how easy that will be remains to be seen.
Not likely.
Or you could wait to see if DAZ documents the new stuff or releases a sample template with the new features.
I don't think there is any connection. Mocap plugin should work directly with facial bones and they're in place since Genesis 3 :)
This is simply marketing - new toy must have features not available for prev generations. At least for some time. Look, G3F already has muscle flexes (even better than G8F as they're HD), shoulder bends may be backported as they're simply JCMs and meshes have the same topology in this area, nails and eyes may be changed using geografts, eyelashes - conformer itself may be altered to support G3F. The only 'new' feature that cannot be ported is PowerPose templates, and that's because they're encrypted. Otherwise it would require a couple of clicks to make them work with Genesis 3 :)
Whether they're mostly plugins or not is really beside the point. They worked in DS3 one day, I upgraded to from DS3 to DS4 because I HAD to in order to use Genesis and then found that all these things that I'd been using on a daily basis were suddenly history. Nor were these the only items, they're just the ones that I owned personally that I remember, and I'm sure others could add a bunch more. More recent upgrades broke part of AOA's Advanced lights, and now the original Skin Builder's Brow builder is broken. Which is why I said I hate upgrading to new versions of DAZ. Because, inevitably, something no longer works correctly.
Did they document any of those spline_* ops they introduced two years ago with Genesis 3 ?
And I think that template for Genesis 8 Female base is very logical choice for sample template :)
If you are familiar with scripting (specifically, with getting a pane so you can call it's members - there's at least one discussion of this in the scripting forum) you can load an unsupported figure to get the default set-up and then use the functions listed in http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/change_log_4_9_4_117#4_9_4_99 to save an unencrypted template file
I don't understand you here. Do you mean that there can be independent templates for G8F from other PAs ? So we'll have 2 or 3 concurrent templates for the same figure. I doubt so. How the directory structure will be in this case? How user will select the template to work with?
And if only one set of templates is possible per figure - what point is to encrypt templates and leave figure unencrypted. Especially when you have encryption scheme for the whole product. Figure is much more work than PP template by any means.
I pretty much cannot. To setup my template from scratch for my figure I need to write Templates.dsx file first. When I do it the old way (like it was in /plugins/PowerPose) it's not accepted. Obviously, I'm doing something wrong but I cannot check what's wrong with working version.
Next, I see some behavior that cannot be achieved with old version and again I cannot learn by example how to do the same in my template.
So DAZ should either document new format (actually, preferred solution) or release update with decrypted templates (all vendors are already aware about encryption possibility, I think :) ).
Thanks, I'll try it tomorrow.
Richard, does this mean that PDSmith's Powerpose templates for other figuires he's already made be usable in the future with no extra needed effort and he can continue to mke them or is it now limited to devs being able to make them and PDSmith and the rest of us who love his products are left in the lurch?
It's like the DAZ Scripting Language; the average script writer doesn't care whether or not someone takes hints from what he's written, whereas the PA that writes a script has to protect his work from theft, as well as set a minimum program version that the script will run on.
As I said, DAZ likely will document this.
