(Didn't I just read you get specular highlights if emissives are opaque? Or did I misread that?)

    You read right.

So that is a bad thing?

No, it's a good thing. Lights without specular are weird. It's only really decent if you're trying to make a light that doesn't really act like a "light" but just brightens the scene. So you'd do a really large light to minimize the shadows and make it almost transparent to remove the specular. Then almost all it will do is lift the diffuse.

    No, not at all.

The Ghost lights are great to mimic ambient light specifically because they won't give you specular highlights. But they leave the scene looking flat. Sometimes that's exactly what you want. But if you want to see those specular highlights, you can make one or more of the lights opaque, (set Cutout Opacity to 1.) Just make sure your opaque lights are not in the frame.

Thank you for explaining this, I never realised this was possible. I use Ghost Lights a lot smiley

    @Mollytabby, You're welcome.

But I should point out, I just learned the bit about making the ghost lights opaque for specular highlights. Earlier in this thread, too! (Gotta love this thread. So helpful. So educational!)

ETA: I was looking into using dropbox to share the duf file for my DOF post when I "discovered" a PDF I did more than a year ago on getting started with the original Iray Ghost Light Kit. If you're interested, here's the link.

Thank you so much! I've just downloaded it. I keep a little notebook to put hints and tips in, but this PDF will be really handy and I've put it on my desktop for quick reference purposes.

Oh btw, Mom is doing great. She won 4 quarters in Bingo today and added that to her Only Bingo Money fund. According to her, "I'm going to buy a yacht." (You'd love my Mom.)  She's totally done with the antibiotics and breathing treatments, all back to normal. I told her about all of your well wishes and she said she really appreciated it. Like to add my thanks also, you were all very sweet. (When she gets her yacht, we'll be sure you are all invited....)

I’m so pleased your Mum is feeling so much better. I’ve never been on a yatch wink.

Good news about your Mum - when she's got the yacht perhaps you can come and pick me up too (nearest port Southampton UK, home port of many cruise liners)!

Great news on your mom!  I'm definitey up for a cruise on a yacht lol.  Preferably to somewhere with no snow!

Glad to hear your mom is on the mend. Your loving care makes a difference. She has a lot of bingo to play to get that yacht, that will keep her busy.

Minto-chan, a render from somebody not as skilled as Rarestone.

I keep trying to avoid females (especially G8,) as I have so many already, but Minto-Chan went into the cart immiediately. (So did a few other things, and now I have to decide what to buy now and what to wishlist.) I was impressed with the both the figure and the number of clothing items and props that come with her. The cost of characters, (and everything else,) keeps creeping up, but with so much in this package, it feels really worth the higher price tag.

@dreamfarmer, your render of Minto-Chan just made my decision more difficult. She really looks great.

Minto is cute. I kind of wondered if her tops would fit G8m. Some of them are cute

    She's too cute...

(quick test run with Ayako Hair and Rule of Cute outfit - I'm not happy with the deformation on the dress across the chest, will have to look into it further)

She is looking good, but doesn't seem to have an expression of unbounded joy.  Perhaps her serious face betrays her thought 'I have to find my friend Sickleyield.  She's a whizz at getting my clothes to fit'?

I, too, have waaaaay too many gals, but I've admitted to being a collector (to showcase them though.) Two more Genesis 3 gals are in Fast Grab, in case you haven't seen the newest items. Raine and Amber are worth a look.

Glad your mom is doing well!

I can't even talk about how many female characters I have. I think I could render one a day and do a different character for the next two years.  No lie. Its ridiculous.

i have way too many female characters, and i hardly use them. :sigh: I think we need to do that as a challenge LOL

Here's your dose of fun animal videos. Let's go with the trampoline. First, two wild foxes, then a baby goat.  The foxes hung out all summer with the owner, frequenting the back yard. How adorable!

I'm not sure how to read this, but I think I have (and this is a rare number to achieve so precisely) exactly FIVE HUNDRED Genesis 3 Females. The first page of avatar "characters" in Content Library says 1-264 of 500, then the second page says 265-500. So I have 500 on the nose!  See why I am only buying ultra low priced gals?  They have to be 70% (or around that) and if not 70%, they must offer a variety of materials or something unusual. Too many characters look like something I already own.

A while back we had a discussion about the Yosemite HDRIs that include Skydomes and how to use them with IRAY renders, and there were some novel solutions...

But this one seems to work the best of everything I've seen suggested before about how to get 3D Delight SkyDomes to work with iray and HDRI light sources:

With the caveat, it cuts off the top of your skydome, so renders from some angles will be impossible - or at least look really strange.
