Thank you.
I'm working on a concept that one can also use these delightful 4.x features with the triax to make "making clothing" a lot faster task for the "legacy" files. Have started a basic thread to cover legacy ... and hopefully this "little project" of mine doesn't get too confusing [for me either lol ...]. It is SO much easier making clothing of some kind for any of the Genesis type figures IMHO.
I don't know if it's just something I missed or what, but so far in asking for legal rigging with clothing items using 4.5 ... I get unwelded sections even though it says it is going to weld them. Fixing the joint stuff may or not fix the problem but in 3.x welded meant welded.
.....................
Just in case down the road in time the threads are miles apart ...
the legacy clothing thread is here:
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/25320/
The Start ... it is going to take a little longer than expected to get all these image edited for the .pdf file so I'll start uploading some for those who are waiting.
n.b. there's a very scary thread elsewhere in the forums about rigging dresses ... don't read it!!!!
In a nutshell:
Keeping in mind that the programs were all released withOUT a very comprehensive "how to do EVERYTHING" manual [would have to be akin to an encyclopedia] ... and everybody's been doing their best to learn "how to" do a lot of stuff ... and help each other too ... not everybody is seeing eye-to-eye on how to rig dresses. Some want 'rig to legs', some do not, they want 'handles', some want 'both', and somebody would rather have no rigging at all. While it may present an interesting render or too to have figures all going about their poses with their clothes stuck in "T" positions, I think we'd better rig our clothing for starters ;-)
In my tutorials I tend to go as far as 'basic rigging' as it is good to get something finished for beginner projects. When the basics are learned and whatever preferences one has are discovered; then there are other tutorials both free online and for purchase that deal with the more advanced rigging using handles/ghost bones.
Movement morphs are another way to deal with active poses although how well they work does vary from item to item. In general a morph for a clothing piece is made the same way a morph for any figure is ... and all of this is not being covered in this next tutorial.

So on with the show:
hopefully the pics will be in order, if not check for their names which are numbers.
And the next set:
And the next set:
And the next five:
And some more:
n.b. One may desire even more face normals that what is showing in this tutorial. Esp. for the top area ;-)
And the last set for tonight [yes there are a lot more to come!]
The PowerPose for Genesis is free and available at sharecg.com. By BlackFeather1973
Have been editing some more pics. This tutorial also covers some basic uvmapping and pinning.
btw - there are also several video tutorials by other people over at Youtube.com. This one is interesting for those converting their old clothing TO Genesis if they wish to keep the morphs!

While smoothing doesn't replace good modeling, it can certainly assist to make clothing fit better.
From the created clothing in this example, with whatever results you have achieved, item back in "T" position, export out the .obj for the dress.
That will then be imported into Hexagon.
Entertaining the masses ... you know, if anybody has a question, you can sign up for free to post in these forums ;-) No cc required.
Forum doesn't tend to respond well to one or two word posts ... so verbose thank yous or you've got to be kidding posts or of course, proper questions are okay. How I do things is of course, not written in stone. If you have a better way, you are also welcome to share the knowledge ;-)
This worked out pretty good I think.
n.b. welding all the groups together made both the materials and uvmap go "poof".
Here's a bonus item.
As many know, uniforms tend to have little badges on them. This is one way to make something, be it insignia or a replacement button or something. For this I also cover uvmapping ... it is good to practice on some "uncomplicated" models to gain some experience for the more complicated ones.
While making many shading domains to make better uvmaps works ... once that goal is accomplished, one can carefully arrange uvmap islands and then assign the lot back to 'one' shading domain per page as long as the end result is satisfactory in the staging programs. And yes that does make for some extra "clean up" work.
And the last set for tonight.
Great tutorial so far. I'm watching and reading but busy with my character Wildfire that I've been working on!
That's okay :-) I don't really expect everybody to make a TOS outfit lol ...
Is there a wip thread I missed on Wildfire? [have visions of a wild hairdo for some reason]
No, not really. It's a superhero. I created a helmet, gloves, boots, shorts and a 2nd skin for Genesis 01 and now am working on adjustment morphs and energy balls and trusters for the hands and feet. Just a pet project I've wanted to do for a while. Come the 20th of Aug when my vacation starts I'll finally have some good time to finish up the Genesis 01 morph packs like I created for Genesis 02F. Not overly impressed with the 2nd generation considering it's all girl stuff which I don't use hardly at all. So back to loving my work on Genesis 01. Considering that Generation 4 stuff is still being released all the time I imagine that Genesis 01 has ALLOT more life in it! So why worry too much about it all becoming obsolete! LOL
Here's an unposed shot I just rendered...
Looking kool :-)
Genesis 1 should be around for quite awhile. 2 wasn't a replacement but as an additional figure. To serve another purpose creating the female figure as such worked better and so it happened.
Patience, this has been the most helpful thread of all, in any forum! Thank you!
I'm currently designing the outfit for the major character in a novel I'm writing and it feels wonderful to break away from really good items, but items that everyone else uses. This thread has really pointed me in the right directions.
I have a question. It's a minor detail. I'm working on a corseted bikini, similar to Aerysoul's old Elven Strapped suit. I'm having the same issue with mine that I had with Aerysoul's -- the corset laces collapse inside the character's cleavage (I'm using V6 but had the same problem with V4).To look right, they should span the character's cleavage in straight lines. She is rather endowed, so it's pretty obvious. Is there any known way to avoid the "fit to cleavage." or is it just something I need to live with?
You're welcome, glad it's helping somebody. :-)
What Tramp Graphics said, there are products to help deal with this issue.
To help an item 'hold its shape', edge lines on the mesh ... and more so wherever stretching/morphing is going to occur.
Don't recall where I saw this information first, whether it was for a product or 'as advice' ... but there was something about making another figure form with no indentations, I gather making it as clothing but without smoothing at all, putting it on the figure, adding the new clothing but having it to 'fit to' or whatever with said figure form. For the render obviously said figure form is either made invisible [hidden] or set to 'not show' in the render. I haven't experimented with all this yet. If anybody recognizes if this is a product and can post the link, great. Or of course, to post credit to the original author. [SickleYield was this one of yours?]
....................................
more pictures have been edited ... lining them up ...
Alright here goes, next batch ...
hit the wrong button ...
I will be putting these together in another .pdf tutorial at some point.
It will be followed [hopefully] by a "part two" if all turns out well. A method to help make fitting clothing for the older figures too!
So if you want to use the .cr2 figures with the legacy rigging ... nab a copy of D/S4.x while it's still free and at some point buy of the morphs for the figures you want clothing for. i.e. V3 or M4 etc. [they've been going on sale quite a bit lately, keep an eye on FastGrab too] [this is not an order, this is just a suggestion for if you want to use Genesis smoothing abilities to make clothing for the older figure files - feel free to wait until all the tutorial is made before spending money if you want to but it's worth it IMHO.] [keeping in mind I don't have Zbrush or anything like that]
Going to be one of those nights ... pictures having problems posting in order.
try this again ...
size isn't the only factor and ? why it's doing this.
Wow! Like I want to add all these 'one by one', I don't think so.
Sometime the road, check my DA Gallery.
I have edited to '88' [and yes there are a few missing numbers] ... have about 30 more to go through, perhaps edit out a few more ... and then compile, so maybe sometime next week.
Trying again ... hoped this is fixed now.
Yes! Okay ...
And some more ... well ... eventually ... when able to receive submission at some time ...
and some more pictures with more text so post will post ....
Did I mention that my dog can talk. Have witnesses too! Yup. And same first word as the last one that could.
Except she says it with more feeling ... nice little howl to it ... Noooooooooo!
