I'm having a strange "black firefly" problem with the Becket character. The first render I did was full of them, so I canceled it thinking it was a glitch, and tried again, but with same result. Then I tried to let it run for a long time to see if they went away. After an hour and 15000 iterations it had just got worse (top picture).

I then cleared the scene and loaded it again, this time it wasn't as bad but still unacceptable. Have done several experiments, with or without hair, with backdrop and without, with varying results, but can't find any pattern. Some are almost clean, others have many. Iray settings are the same for them all.

Any idea what can be causing this? No problems with other characters. Latest version of DS.

Make sure Draw Dome is enabled in Render Settings > Environment.  I think there is another way to fix it, but that seems to be the easiest I've come accross so far

Looks like others have had similar issue with some other skins.  https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/213156/black-pixels-in-renders

If you apply Beckett, then apply the Sakura MATS back on the figure, does it render OK?  If so, then maybe apply the "diffuse texture"
for Becket to the face surface, and see if still OK.  (while maintaining all other Sakura settings for the face mat)

Yes, it looks OK if I do that.

    3dOutlaw said:

If so, then you may need to compare surface settings for the Beckett material and the Sakura material (or any other material for that matter)  Things like diffuse map would be expected differences, but look for other non-expected differences.

...or post those settings compared in a screenshot over in the Nuts and Bolts forums.  Then Richard or some of the more expert folk can help!

...or report as a possible bug  :)  I figured if everyone saw this, they would have seen it in QA

    Will try that. Thanks!

Yes that seems to fix it. Will take a look at the shaders though as 3dOutlaw suggested. Thanks!

BTW, Becket also has a 3DL texture (not mentioned on the product page), so gave it a try.

edit: does anyone know an efficient technique to make the eyes point to the camera in a natural way? I'm using Sakura Eyes for Sakura 8 from 3DOutlaw. The only way I found it is manually adjusting, since if I put to point to the camera or to an object aligned to the camera, but far away, the eyes don't look natural for some positions.

Are you using the Sakura Eyes or the Simple Eyes?  They should both be available in the same location.  The latter should work with PointAt, I believe.  If you don't see the Simple Eyes, re-download and install again, as they were updated.  Further question, catch me over on this THREAD.  You need to load a freebie morph, but I link to it from there.

(BTW, cute character, shaders look good!)

Messing around with Becket again as a male. Loaded in normal Becket with a different skin to make the contrast strong enough.

My attempt at changing Sakura into a male. I don't have the g8f body and face morphs, so I'm hoping when I do that will make a big improvement.

All your pics seem to be missing for some reason. Both in IE, Chrome and Firefox.

  • I am sorry Toaz. I am not sure what you mean by missing?

Not bad! :) Maybe smaller eyes and different lashes? That might help make the character look more male. :) He's cute though - a good start!

They don't show. In Chrome I see the text you write, nothing else, in IE and Firefox there is a "broken" icon for the pic. Since it's the same in all browsers and I have no problem with seeing pics from anyone else it looks like a general problem with your pics.

If I click the broken icon and copy the url, and paste it into the browser, it says the page doesn't exist.

  • Hmm all the way back or just recent in the thread. I have suspicion what it might be. Although it is weird I can see them and I am on another device.
  • OK  try this one without it being in the body of the text

Not all the way back, I can see some here and forward (but also a broken icon in the post):

    Yes, that works.

  • Ok apparently had two issues. Need to leave lower attachments there and the other is an admin issue that I did not know about until I just followed the link. Have to resize the renders.

    Looks fine now.

  • Ok thanks for letting me know. I am not going to spam thread to fix the rest although it is rather annoying since it doesn't like dropbox here either.
  • A render of Sakura with a Gen3 original character (Sojiro). There's photoshop & Lightroom postwork.

He does looks really good! I've been wondering this... are you using the 3delight shaders? Or are you using the iray shaders and rendering in 3delight? 'Cause that's how the skin looks when I render in 3delight while using the iray shaders (mostly when I'm using LineRender 9000).

He already looks like a cute, young male character :). Like @Divamakeup said, it's a great start!

He's Sojiro, the next character preset I'll be sharing. You can check out more renders of him here.

BTW, I also reached out yesterday to Tofusan via ShareCG to see if he/she could distribute the anime head for G3F transferred to G3M. Hopefully I'll get a response soon.

Probably the latter since I really only use the Iray when I want a  more realistic look or need to cast shadows.  I have never been able to get 3DL to cast shadows the way I want it to.  I also have been dealing with some sort of bug with the materials if I apply the3DL shader for Becket.   I have the LineRender9000 as well but still fooling with it.  I have add ons to PS and my other program that can duplicate it with less effort honestly.  I usually use 3DL because it tends to create a more painted look that I prefer , especially with hair.

If you turn the SSS Mode from Chromatic to Mono it goes away but it makes the color off. I didnt realize this was an issue since I always render with the dome on :( Looks like I need to make another shader setup using Mono thanks for posting this I had no idea.

Outfit has possibilities for use with a male Sakura  but couldn't stand the boots that come with it. Also the fact its 3DL shaders don't work.  Having fun with playing with this male.

Awesome. I'm also wondering about the render settings.

Thanks to both of you. His face still looks a little too girlish for my prefereence, but I'll keep playing around with it.

  • Used Iray in default. Rarely mess with those but for when I am doing something specific or using scripted 3DL. I have Nathan's anime and manga shader sets as well but still haven't figured them out in all the years I have had them lol. I generally stick with 3DL because I cam reset the surface settings to matte. I hate that plastic and metallic settings usually way to shiny.

OK, thanks. It's funny though, I tried to put her inside a cube with dark grey diffuse color, using only a mesh light inside the box. This also causes the black spots, but turning on the dome also fixes it here. I would have thought that it would have no effect inside the box. But that's only good for then you can fix it that way for indoor scenes also, without changing the SSS setting.

Does anyone have any tips on how to make the eye completely closed? It seems like a silly question, but I tried several shapes and modifying parameters but the result does not look good. Either one corner of the eye is always a bit opened, or the eyelids begin to cross each other.

About shaping, is there a way to make the whole mouth (upper and lower lips) go up/down relative to the entire face?

Haven't tried, but I think someone asked earlier in this thread. I believe there's expression sets for Sakura that include the "closed eyes" smile.
