Lovely Lizard!
Here is my not so realistic render for the day... a "large-boned" cat, made with my Milcat fur freebie... (just checking that it still works)
I was trying to change it to my avatar but a 100x100 jpg would not upload for some reason. Is it me, or a forum error?
Is the avatar under 100 KB?
Love that render, Holly! Interesting effect.
Is he hiding the mic? lol
LOL! This cat seems to be silent....
Yes about 28k.... Also tried a png that was 72k... I will try a different browser later...
You use a Mac if I recall. Doubt that matters but when I tried to change my avatar graphic it didn't appear to take. I had to clear the browser cache before the new image appeared in the forums. It was rather confusing at first until I remembered the cache.

Not sure..., the website actually gives me an error. Firefox seems to have a lot of issues with Facebook too... *sigh* change is stressful...
Firefox! THERE'S your problem! (Okay, that just bought me a ton of hate...) Actually, I used FF for a long time before going back to IE (yes, I'm snivelling corporate shill for Microsoft...).
Since it is the website that errors, I'd recommend a Fiddler trace...but I think that is Windows only. Not sure if there is a Mac version or a Mac equivalent.
Give Opera a try...I used to really love that browser...haven't looked at it in ages though.
Avatars and also banner images are currently not working. This is a known problem and has been reported. If you have one already, then you appear to be stuck with it until this is sorted out. If you don't have one then there is no way to add one.
Sigh. I guess I'm still stuck in black and white :)
(Actually, I was just looking to change my avatar, though it'd probably stay black and white.)
I like Firefox, I miss the ability to use my banner gifs, and I really like Thoromyr's B&W avatar :coolhmm:
Older renders, while I wait for my monster to finish rendering 8000 x 4000 surrounds. Hoofta... dat stuph taiks teim!
High res renders are worth the wait, though. And as I'm re-discovering can be quicker than cranking up the settings on screen resolution efforts. (A simple project I didn't intend to spend much time on has me gritting my teeth. Third render attempt just crashed carrara after ~42 hours. Argh!)
Yeah. It seems, or at least 'feels' like the 8.5 beta renders more valiantly without error. When working for others, I use the official release. Love 'em both... but the work they did on the beta certainly stole my heart ;)
Edit: Man, I love coming here, with that cool Kitty picture at the top of the page. Thanks Holly!
Something a little different
My first attempt at using hair to create a red velvet fuzz on my queuing ropes. I guess it is not bad for not having read how to use hair (only watched Cripeman's facial stubble tute).
I'm still frustrated that:
1) the hair didn't stay in the shading domain for it...it is also covering my brass endcaps
2) it is far too long to be velvet-like...in spite of me setting its length as small as I could (the Carrara UI is one of my biggest gripes in this regard)
Let's see what I can end up learning today!
Well... if you are curious about Bryce... here's some videos to check out on my Youtube channel. Might help you decide if it is something that would suit you.

David---
Thanks for posting all those vids-----very nice stuff indeed. And even if folks do not want to use Bryce------there are many techniques that one can apply into Carrara maybe using the different tools in Carraa but still can be extremely useful as well.
Rich
I bought the DVD the minute it hit the store.
WE are very friendly in the Bryce forum if you ever feel you might like to visit.
#1: hair not staying in a shading domain
dynamic hair is applied to the model, not a shading domain. When you first add the hair to a model you are prompted for UVs/guides and whether or not to start with an empty grow region. Once that dialog is dismissed you are in the modeling room with the add region tool active. In your case whether or not you start with an empty grow region isn't I don't think a big deal -- it should be quick work with the brush and either "add region" or "subtract region" as appropriate. The brush can be resize (on a mac this is one by holding down the command key and dragging, I've forgotten the key on windows) and "flatness" adjusted.
#2: hair too long
I'm not sure what you are adjusting, but there are a few ways to control hair length. In the modeling room select the hair and set the hair guides and set the length via the menu. You can use the hair length tool to paint hair length (of the hair guides). For it you must set the desired length (which defaults to zero). You can use the hair shader to 'cut' the hair to some percentage of its normal length.
Sorry, I'd give screen caps, but I've got a non-batch render going...
what up with the Bryce stuff ?
Thanks Thoromyr! I'll work on applying that advice...and then when in doubt, read the manual! :)
Nothing wrong with a bit of RTFM, but it is woefully inadequate as regards hair, IMO. Which reminds me, there's some updating I need to do in my notes.
I might have to read the manual after all...my new attempts at a hair shader ended up solid black...so in last night's attempt, I got lucky...
renders for a new hope? How about this? A Ruckus in Karrakas. I did this for my son -- he has more swords than he can count, some of which are light sabers.
Thank you Rich for your kind remarks. Yes, I had not considered that because I'm not familiar with the workings of Carrara, but you could well be right about being able to make use of the same methods. Interesting.

For your purpose you really don't need much in the shader. Leave the kink, frizz, etc., alone and just change the color from the defaults (black root, brown tip) to something appropriate for the velvet. Personally, I prefer color gradients to solid colors, but that's just me.
For a short stubble you could possibly get away with reducing the segment count from the default of 4, but watch out for using the shader's length channel: it cuts the hair so if your root color is black and you crop it short you'll end up with black. The color of a strand is per-segment so having the root and tip colors vary a lot for low segment hair doesn't work well.
I set my segment to 1. Perhaps that where the problem lies.
EDIT: Nope! Still no joy! Darn it all..I should have saved my work last night.
I'm also struggling to hang the velvet ropes between the queuing poles realistically with the bones structure that I put in place. This is what I get for tackling two new big topic in one scene!

if you provide a screen cap of the hair shader and the hair settings in the modeling room I might spot something.
Thanks. I hope these screen scrapes show enough info -- because as you can see in the third picture, it just got a whole lot worse...
very nice ...
