    Painterly effects on the cover. Thoughts? Too much? Not enough? Colors?

    What about the new composition with the gun between them? I think it's better, but I'm concerned about the dead space to the left. Thoughts?

    This is the full mock up with cover edges.

     

    This one includes only a ghost of the text so you can focus more on the image, but still figure out where the text will go.

    Something about the gun is bothering me.  Maybe it looks too detailed compared to the figures.  On the left (I asume this is the back cover) can you put an Asteroid, a dead moon, or a colorful nebula?

    Thanks! I think you are right about the gun. I will revisit it. The back will probably get a little more color (nebula), but I may not add objects, as they dread space is for text and if I have both light and dark elements, the text will be hard to read. I'll know more when I get the copy from the editor. I will post an update in a day or so.

    Playing around with the Graphic Novel filter from the G'Mic filter set for Gimp. Normalization is off, Pencil smoothing is off, Boost Merging Options is Colors Doping. I then desaturated to about 65%

    I rendered the initial model using 3Delight and a single spotlight, with a deep shadow map with 35% softness and a shadow strength of 90%.

    Pretty nice. Gimp has really stepped up it's game, if it's got filter sets like that.

    WOW. This is nice. I like the shadows, lighting and the composition. This creates a very dramatic scene.You did a really expert job of handling all the shades of brown that are in this piece. The only thing I don't love is the ground. It's nice that it has texture and looks different from the normal flat ground, but there is something about it that seems repetitive, and thus seems a bit out of place here. But that's a small point. I really love westerns, and this is a great illustration.

    Not bad at all.  I might have to reinstall GIMP at some point.

    I agree about the ground.  I would like to do more Western renders.  I need to buy more western themed items (Sounds familiar doesn’t it?).  I don’t know if I’m going to get Horse 2 or wait and see if they come out with a Horse 8.  Once I get a nice horse model with a western saddle rig, I’ll do more Wild West renders.

    LOL.  The capital ship does look a bit like the SDF-3.  I'd kill for some fully functional Alpha Fighters and Cyclone Armor for DAZ or Poser.

    So here's a technique in progress. Its striking to me, because it resembles that VSS painted look, but its not a toon shader. What you're seeing is the "Dazdefault" shader, being lit with a spotlight and an UberEnvironment. I've done no postwork to this image. It needs some tweaking, but I think I'm on to something.

    This looks very similar to a technique I used to use in Daz Studio 3, before pwToon came out. I would set every surface to have about 50% diffuse and about 50% ambient, tweak the diffuse and ambient colours a bit, and then light the scene with a single direct light.

    Fortunately i've managed to track down a couple of (VERY) old renders of mine I did using this technique back then. Both are of the Kururu freebie model along with the freebie Hatsune Miku outfit. These probably would've looked better had I remember to turn on raytraced shadows at the time.

    Several of you on this thread recently mentioned/advised working with larger resolutions/images.  For whatever reason, I never did that.  I tried working with a larger render and found it is so much easier to draw lines/fix unclear areas and do clean up for turning the render into more of a comic book effect.  I used a cross-hatch filter on this one and like how it turned out.  The cleaned up/tooned up version w/out cross hatch is in my art thread.

    My main drive for piddling around with the free toon shader that comes with D|S, is to find new things people may have not known about, and to give cash strapped artists an attractive alternative to shelling out for stuff like VSS or PWToon, I own and use the later quite a bit, but its nice to have options.

  • Got more positive feedback from the editor. I think we have nailed down the composition and I will be attempting to wrap up the painting effects tonight.

  • You achieved some very nicee results here, and I'm very glad that our advice about working with larger renders has netted you solid results. Almost every professional artist works at a larger size and then shrinks it down because it's easier to get good results when you're not cramped for space. If I recall correctly, most comic artists work at about 150% size (or larger). In other words, they work on 11 x 17 art board and shrink it down to comic size.

    I recall reading an interview back in the 1980s or 90s that, in order to keep meeting his deadlines on Fantastic Four (and the many other books he did in a single month) that writer/artist John Byrne actually visted the production department at Marvel Comics and found out the maximum paper size they could "scan" (i.e. photograph and reduce - this was before modern digital technology). He found out that they could handle a piece of art 2.5 times the printed size (comics print at about 6.625 × 10.25 inches), so his original art was about 16.5 x 25 inches! He said it was liberating to work so big and that he could actually use art markers rather than fine-tip pens and brushes.

    Now, some people didn't like his art from that period (some thought it looked rushed), but personally I liked the boldness of his style from that time.

    Anyway, just a mini-ramble on my part. I'm very happy to hear you're finding out what works for you and are getting such good results.

    BTW: Love the clean-yet-broken line on the jaw and that cool smudge effect on the moon. Nicely done!

    I would love to use that style if you had a preset for it to share (since it's a default setting just tweaked). My only gripe is that I feel a lot of detail from face morphs tend to disappear. I've been rendering M4 with velvet set to high, an IBL, and a few RIM lights and getting a similar result, just not as flat.

    Here's a "virgin" take on the cover art for the sci-fi anthology. As you can see, it's actually huge; I did this so we could easily change the aspect ratio to 8.5 x 11, or even make a poster out of it. I mostly like the painterly effects on this (I used Topaz Studio with the Impressions package), but I might need to simplify the texture on the gray alien's suit before calling this done. Next up, feedback from the editor. (Note, this is a small version of the cover: the finished piece is much bigger).

    Feedback on specific places needing additional attention is GREATLY welcome!
