That looks like an illustration straight out of a children's book. Excellent work! :) It came out beautifully!

Here's a "virgin" take on the cover art for the sci-fi anthology. As you can see, it's actually huge; I did this so we could easily change the aspect ratio to 8.5 x 11, or even make a poster out of it. I mostly like the painterly effects on this (I used Topaz Studio with the Impressions package), but I might need to simplify the texture on the gray alien's suit before calling this done. Next up, feedback from the editor. (Note, this is a small version of the cover: the finished piece is much bigger).

Feedback on specific places needing additional attention is GREATLY welcome!

    beautiful and dynamic composition

beautiful blue gradation, the spacehips very effective and the one at the back just the right amount of reduced contrats - plus gives a stopping point for the eye

    the only crits are:

     1) the yellow gold refceltion on the alien faceplate (figure on right is alian?)  doesnt sit in with the rest of the colors - you have orange working with blue and that purple mauve should be working with the yellow - but it's probably too green???

dropping the saturation of the yellow might help - or adding purple to the shadow side of the helmet??? if you introduced yellow into the title writing it might sit better

    2) Foreshortening of the alien's legs is confusing

    3) the human is lit with high contrast light, as is the gun - one would expect the alien to have the same light hitting it/him

just nit picking - but that's what you need before you go to press :)

    edit: sorry about the typos

So here's a technique in progress. Its striking to me, because it resembles that VSS painted look, but its not a toon shader. What you're seeing is the "Dazdefault" shader, being lit with a spotlight and an UberEnvironment. I've done no postwork to this image. It needs some tweaking, but I think I'm on to something.

I would love to use that style if you had a preset for it to share (since it's a default setting just tweaked). My only gripe is that I feel a lot of detail from face morphs tend to disappear. I've been rendering M4 with velvet set to high, an IBL, and a few RIM lights and getting a similar result, just not as flat.

Its just not where I want it yet. If I get it improved to my liking, I'll gladly share it.

Thanks very much, just the kind of feedback I need!

I think you're dead-on right about the light on the alien. It looks off when compared to the other two items. I'm going to revisit this, but not go too extreme (I hope). And, If I'm going to rerender him, I might as well do something about the legs (on the cover they are mostly cropped off, which is why I think I've been letting that ride all this time).

Hmmm. I'm going to think about the yellow faceplate. Although you are right, I wonder if mitigating the bright yellow would diminish the current visual "weight" he carries in the image. Of course, if I add more white highlights to his suit, that might balance out that issue. I'll give it a shot!

    Thanks!

I agree with, Walt - fun stuff! I only had time to pop in for a second but will read them all when I have more time. I clicked on the last one and the bit with "Boxes aren't as much fun anymore", with her standing in the box sighing heavily, made me laugh. :D

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, boxes ceasing to be fun, is probably about as devestating as discovering that the red dot comes out of a keychain fob. Its enough to make a cat question everything!

  • Glad I found that thread! Up until now I thought I am the ony one doing NPR with Daz laugh

I usually do an Iray or #3Delight render first and postprcess everything in Photoshop later. I don't use any toon-shaders, just the regular textures that come with the characters. Here are some examples of my work. If you're interested in my techniques let me know. I am also working on photoshop actions that automate most of the work.

I really like the 2nd to the last image.  I'm always interested in new techniques as I have Photoshop as well.

I'm fascinated by your use of wood as a body texture. Very, very interesting and it conveys a great deal of whimsy. Nicely done!

Your work always looks so artistic.  If I saw this in a gallery, I'd never guess it was 3D.  I may not always comment on your renders, but I do admire your work.  They are always so interesting.

Carrara job from present challenge - highly recommend Carrara if you want to do NPR

'Family of Thylacine Sheltering Under Boab Tree'

Digital work, 2019 - couldn't resist a purple shadow sitting against yellow pink ground... bit like the colours in a copy of an Albert Namatjira water colour my father did many years ago when he was learning to paint. It hung proudly above our fireplace till it was destroyed by water damage circa 1977

I didn't know the recent history of The Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus) till I started this image. The earliest fossils of Thylacinus are 30 million years old.

Though extinct on the mainland for 2000 years Thylacinus cynocephalus survived in Tasmania until recently - when it was made extinct by active human aggression. (Thylacinus cynocephalus should be in italics)

    From Aust Govt site:

1830 - Van Diemens Land Company introduced a Thylacine bounty
    1888 - Tasmanian Parliament placed a price of £1 on Thylacine's head
1909 - Government bounty scheme terminated: 2184 bounties paid
1910 - Thylacines rare - sought by zoos around the world
1926 - London Zoo bought its last Thylacine for £150
1933 - Last Thylacine captured, Florentine Valley, sold to Hobart Zoo
1936 - World's last captive Thylacine died in Hobart Zoo (7 September 1936)
1936 - Thylacine added to the list of protected wildlife
1986 - Thylacine declared extinct by international standards

thank you so much Artini et Divamakeup :)

I have to admit that carrara makes it easy ( easier) to work on images in post because it provides so many render passes straight out of the box

there are isolation passes you can use as masks, depth pass, outline passes, ambient occlusion passes, shadow passes, material diffuse passes, caustics, reflection, post effect passes

it means you can use all these to isolate what you need and work on it as you would - there are also free plugins that let you render out a detailed line pass and a wireframe

(sounds like I am talking Carrara up)

for example this simple one of the swan - I didnt bring in the beauty pass till almost at the end and only used it to add a little detail and 'colour' (beauty pass for me is the finsished render out of the box)

I attach the beauty pass - not that it's beautiful ha ha :) For the postwork I mainly used Photodonut

thanks again for commenting on my work
