Mimic Pro, Resurrection Campaign -- URGENT, please read

Hi all,

I am not sure if there is a chance of this happening, or how many users of DAZ Studio are animating with the software, but I wonder how many people here would like to resurrect Mimic Pro from the land of the lost?

I use it very often for doing my 3d film work. More and more time goes by and the software seems to be on the way out and information is harder and harder to come by. Do any of you out there use it? If not, is there a satisfactory substitute for it that will import .wav files and allow our characters in DAZ Studio to talk without having to hand keyframe all the dialogue?

I am very curious how many people would like to see Mimic Pro upgraded and supported seriously again. If you don't care about it or use it, that's okay. Please don't naysay it. It's really useful for animation, and I can't do a 3d film in DAZ Studio without it. It may not be for everyone's needs, but the Mimic Live is limited to live voice recording only and will not translate a .wav file, which limits its usefulness. For me, it is unworkable because my cast is all over the world. Mimic Live will only work if recorded live in the same location. For the tool to be useful, Mimic Pro needs to support all that it supported before, in addition to Genesis.

Show of hands, how many people want the Genesis upgrade for Mimic Pro and a dedicated forum for the software again?

Thanks for your interest and your help.

Sincerely,

Ken Thomson

I don't have it, but would purchase it if functionality made it worth my while.

I've been using it steady for the last 3 years. I can use it for all characters except Genesis. This software is nothing short of brilliant and almost totally forgotten, but I used to animate lipsync by hand with the assistance of a program called Magpie. I did it in 3d Studio Max. It could take days to keyframe it by hand. Mimic Pro did it in seconds. It is pure genius. As an animation tool, it is the unsung hero that needs to be sung. :)

I have not upgraded from DS3 Advanced yet, just because I can't make use of Genesis yet. If there is support for Genesis, we still need the support pages updated with links, and the original download file could be updated with the new dnc files needed for all the other figures. The Millennium 4 figures have to be found by links I can no longer find. Why waste such a good thing?

Please don't let this software die, DAZ. It deserves a new lease on life and an upgrade. :)

I use Mimic pro for Carrara.
I don't use it as much as I'd like, but I do like it.

We should hope it stays alive.

Does the Carrara version export .pz3 files and support Genesis? I'm just curious. I do not really use Carrara in my workflow.

I'd love to see Mimic upgraded so works properly with Genesis. Can do it in Carrara but can't capture to regular pz2 if I recall - so leads to much less flexibility, particularly if running into issues with saving file (which was a frequent problem half a year ago; haven't tried much recently). But a consistent lip synch pathway is key for the animation I'd like to do, and this has definitely held me back from adopting Genesis.

Same here. I literally stopped buying stuff that requires DAZ Studio 4.x because I'm not moving away from software that does what I need. I feel like I'm stuck in the past, but I am going to finish my 3d film and I can't justify moving on to different software that loses functions that I need, even for the nice new figure that is exactly what I need. A perfect world would be DAZ Studio 4 with full Mimic support and all the legacy figure morphs able to be brought over to Genesis.

I have loaded DS4, but so much was different and to be honest, the last time I tried it was the first or second release, well over a year ago. I just can't justify the move yet. If there's a better solution and I'm just missing it, that's one thing, and I would love any help to find a good solution. But I have huge files and require 64 bit to access all the memory on my system, so a 32 bit only solution is out.

I've supported it from day one, but haven't been able to use it on the Mac properly for years. I would certainly support an upgrade, but only if it's also upgraded for Macintosh.

I suspect that it can still create useful files for DS4, but it doesn't work with Genesis yet, as far as I know. I've been looking for a .dnc file for Genesis, saw that Mimic Pro isn't even listed for sale anymore, and found myself quite depressed over it.

I would love to see more love for MAC users too. With Windows 8, I've been considering moving to a MAC for some time. But alas, all my software is for PC's. But it's all upgrading to uselessness. I was state of the art a couple of years ago. I hate upgrades that break things.

    I still use it
    and it works with Genesis
there is a dmc file in plugins for Genesis
for Poser 2012 which I have you need the DSON importer script from Dimension3D and save genesis as a cr2 to use in Mimic pro

That's very good news! I still would like to campaign with other users to have DAZ put it all in the download package together so we can avoid having to hunt all over creation for needed files. It's in their interest to do it, I would think. It is just a matter of adding those .dnc's to the archive, or adding them as a second part of the archive. I would think they could make a lot of sales with a minor amount of effort.

Do you happen to have a link to that file? I'm not sure where to look for it.

    Thanks! :)

I till use it. Would love to see it upgrade or at least back in the store. I know the Mac version is going to need a major upgrade.

Surprised they still sell Mimic Lite, but not Pro.

Genesis as was mentioned does have a dmc file. It installs with DS 4 or the Genesis Starter Essentials. (See attached pic.)

You're right Demonslayer, Mimic Pro is awesome! I use it for my animations as well and wouldn't want to be without it.

I would buy it if they get they updated the mac version. Lip sync in the 32bit version works, but only lip-syncs. I could not find a way to even see the keyframes on the time line.

Having a great lip-sync system would really improve the overall usability of DAZ.

Hello. Yes, I too would love to see Mimic up-dated/graded! It's been my my only route to lip-syncing that I trust and really delivers the final look I want. YES! More work on, (and for), Mimic! (Especially for Carrara!)

I've got the Pro version, haven't used it yet, but will add to the chorus of getting it to work with Genesis. That should be a GIVEN.

If it works in 4.6 and with Genesis and is reasonably priced I'd buy it.

on the rare occasions I do lipsync in D|S 4.6 64bit my mimic pro pz2 files load on Genesis fine.
(I of course use my Poser created cr2 to do them)
otherwise a 32bit studio lipsync .duf will save to use in 64bit
Carrara mimic is my usual Genesis tool though and have never tried saving a pz2 but with Fenrics pz2 exporter it should be possible.

Is Mimic now included in Carrara? I know there used to be a Lightwave plugin for Mimic but that was dropped years ago. Mimic2 had standard and Pro. Mimic 3 was Pro only (full and upgrade from 2). Then there was Mimic Lite. I thought at one time there was a Mimic plugin for Carrara. All I can find are Mimic Lite (the older scaled back version) and Mimic Live which only seems to work in DS.

I'm looking for an alternative to animating in Poser. I am especially looking for a good lipsync tool. Mimic has caught my eye, and I'm impressed to see people here bragging it up. Wish I could try it out.

I noticed Mimic Live is available. I wonder if it will also lipsync from a recorded file. Anybody know?

How about that Mimic Lite? Anybody try it?

You should also take a look at realillusions iClone software. You can import DAZ models into iClone with their pipeline software.

I've ordered a copy of iClone. I've used Reallusion's lipsync tools, and they're decent. I could live with them. Their characters are a bit unsophisticated, though. I like the control over the character's appearance that Poser gives.

Importing DAZ or Poser characters into iClone, though, is not as easy as it might seem. The bone structure is incompatible. Some of the props are incompatible. DAZ does such a beautiful job of opening Poser files that, if Carrara was a good animation tool, I'd use in in a minute.

I agree with your comments about iClone and Daz. I have also used DAZ's Animate with the Animate motions that they sell. They are great if you only want one cycle of animation, but it doesn't blend cycles together very well.

I'm not sure what kind animation you are doing, but you might want to check out the new Realillusions Crazytalk Animator 2. It looks like you could render 8 views of a DAZ Character and then import those into animator 2 and get some good results.

I'm looking forward to trying it once A2 gets released.

CT Animator is 2D. At one time I thought it was what I was after. But, I wanted a posable mannequin too. So I started learning Poser. Then I went down a rabbit hole. Now, I want to stay with 3D.

I want to see a character speaking in a 3/4 view, or a side view, or from above or below. I want to be able to rotate the camera around while the character is moving. If the guy can't walk down the street and chew gum at the same time, I'm OK with that.

The animation in GTA5 is the best I've seen anywhere. My goal is a poor man's version of that style.
    ..............................

It seems that in Mimic, the key is that each character needs its own DMC file. Hopefully these are easy to find or create. Otherwise, the selection of usable characters would be limited.
