Blech, another day of being the worlds highest-paid tester! :blank: Watching big numbers count down and small numbers count up. Meh.

I did discover that the "low end" Core i7 Haswell laptop I've been looking at will take 32GB of RAM! :bug: It's only $1399 with 8GB, I'll stuff the rest in myself and save money. Just have to save up the $1400 now... :blank:

Lunch in one hour since breakfast was late. Then coffee, coffee, and more coffee. Snzzzz....

what's the popular beer in Australia?

saw my neighbor with a stella artois. it was somehow man canceling :-/

It varies considerably, especially to states.

QLD tend to be fans of XXXX Gold (Dad lives there)

NSW is often VB, Blonde and Tooheys (I'm in NSW btw)

Vic is most certainly fond of VB

    Don't know about other states.

All beer is lager here, tends to confuse English ppl. VB where I am, and Swan in West Australia :)
...doesn't Tooth's make a stout though? Or is that just for export?

    afternoon TEA time

rummage in the fridge - lessee.
fresh mozzarella cheese, tomato, black olive, stir in a bit of olive oil. says extra virgin.

i thought virgin was a boolean option, seems to be degrees of extra? mebbe it's diluted with something non-olive

...sadly the bottled Guinness sold in the stores and served in the average pubs here in the states is made in Canada as well.

Only the Pub Draft Cans & Bottles (the ones with the little "widget" in them that inject nitrous into the brew the moment the can/bottle is opened to produce the creamy head one would usually get in a pub from a nitrous driven tap) are brewed in Dublin, and possibly, if you have any true, "traditional" Irish pubs (like we do here), they still may get their firkins imported directly from Dublin.

It's a shame - if I want a Canadian beer, I'll buy a Canadian beer! The Pub Draft cans are pretty cool, as hot as it's going to be Friday I might pick up a 4-pack.

I wonder if P.D O'Reilleys downtown imports their? Next time I'm down there for fish & chips and a black and tan, I'll have to ask.

Dang, now I want fish and chips!!! (cry cry cry)

    ...they may.

The two up here are Kell's in downtown (a fairly expensive but nonetheless marginally traditional pub that hosts a big St Patrick's day celebration (4 - 5) days long) and Biddy McGraw's up in the near Northeast side of the city.

"Biddy's" was founded by a woman who hailed from Castlecaulfield, in County Tyrone (Northern Ireland), which used to be located in the SE Hawthorne district where I hang out. It was possibly the truest of Irish pubs I have seen here in the States as when you walked in the doors there was a painted list of all the counties in Ireland the back wall (which is still there even though another establishment occupies the premises) and a large Irish flag on another.

The Guinness was served at what is called "cellar" temperature (not ice cold) properly dispensed through a nitro tap into a true "imperial" pint (unlike the "cheater" pints most other pubs used). I used to love watching "newbies" who would order a Guinness and immediately start drinking before the "cascade" (the process that builds the creamy head) finished only to get a scowl from old Mike the barkeep for being so impatient. When he saw I had maybe a quarter pint left, he would look at me, nod I'd nod back and he'd draw me another. By the time I was finished, the next pint would be ready. There was no "spooning off" of the head like some pubs do, this fellow knew how to draw the "proper pint".

Only ten months after they opened, representatives from Guinness flew into Portland to give them a special award for selling more of the creamy headed stout than any other pub in the States (and again this was in only a ten month period). The folks from Dublin would continue to make return visits from time to time.

An evening wouldn't go by when there wasn't music (back then, mostly traditional acoustic and often spontaneous). As the players and patrons began to get more into the spirit, tables were moved to the side and dancing commenced, almost reminiscent of like the steerage scene in the film "Titanic" (and this was eighteen years ago).

Alas the founder (Patricia 'Biddy McGraw' O'Neill) passed on a couple years ago. I actually spoke with her many times and she was quite the colourful person indeed and both kind and patient (unless one insisted on getting into an overheated political discussion then she'd pull their pint and "politely" be shown them door - keep in mind, she was from Northern Ireland)

in 2000, Biddy's moved to another location, primarily so they could also offer food and have more space (the old location on Hawthorne had a maximum occupancy limit of 89 which I knew was often exceeded, especially on St Patricks Day). Unfortunately it is kind of out of the way for me and I haven't been there since the relocation. I've ridden past on occasion and recently seen signs about a card room in the upper floor (card rooms are legal in Portland). Not sure if it is a different operation from the pub and that possibly only the name is all that is left. I may have to go there sometime to see for myself if it has been "Americanised" or not.

Would be a pity if it was, but a lot can change in eighteen years.

The last real" Irish pub I went to was in SF, so long ago I can't remember the name.. it was in North Beach. Some of the Irish ex-pats at Philips took me down for a "real pint" and to meet some friends.

I had a great time - killer band, expert pints of Guinness served cool not cold, chicken curry and chips, and I do recall I ended up dancing with the wonderful lady.. :red:

I need to get back to the Portland/Seattle area again someday, to visit. I want to do a beer tour of Portland!!!

No fish and chips near me.. I'm going to get two Whatacatch fish sandwiches, pile the goodies all on one bun and have a double filet sandwich! :-)

... if you do, I'll give you a personal guided tour of Portland pubs and brew pubs. May take a couple days as neither of us drive and we'll have to deal with the transit system here. Taxi fares are kind of steep.

The best Fish & Chips here is the Hawthorne Fish house, Not greasy and made with your choice of fish instead of the "cheap catch of the day". I would of course recommend the Cod as that is the "traditional" fish used.

Ok, sure! I'll cover transportation costs and food/beer if you provide the expert knowledge!

It'll be a few months - I'm just now starting saving for my next vacation, and I'm not sure coming up in December is a good idea (lol brrrr).

I'm likely going to take 3 days off - a Thursday, a Friday, and a Monday - and fly up to Portland (despite my dislike of air travel). I'm planning on staying downtown-ish, which should make things a bit easier for me.

The two tours I've looked at so far want $100 per ticket for a visit to 4-5 pubs. :bug: wtf?!?!? For that I could cab it all over downtown on my own! Yeesh... :blank:

If it happens I'll give you LOTS of notice.. hopefully you'll be working by then!

*edit* Wow, affordable! Airfare and hotel for 4 nights is just $900 if I stay at this place called the Hotel Monaco downtown, looks lose to lots of downtown fun! This might take less time than I thought! *breaks out spreadsheet*

*edit 2* I could have the money by October if I can keep out of the strip clubs and not buy a new computer until next year. I think I need the vacation more.. lol.. I'll keep you in the loop.

...you're on. Actually some of the better ones are outside the downtown area but not too far.

Yeah, the guided pub tours are pricey and you are sort of "under the gun" to rush your pints as they have to maintain a schedule.

If I had the resources, I'd set up a "Pub Crawl" transit service with a few old school buses that would regularly circulate through the best pub areas in town throughout the day until late night. This way you could get off at a place stay for a while and catch the next one that comes by at your leisure. You'd buy your pass-ticket at the start of your day and it would be good until the last run of the evening. There'd be no "on site" tours offered, just a means of letting you safely do a day of pubbing without having to get behind the wheel or deal with the normal transit system, or high priced cabs. It would probably cost 15 - 20$ or so but that's still less than the guided tours or two cab rides with tip, and way cheaper than getting a DUI.

One thing, downtown Portland is surprisingly compact. Actually it would be cheaper to get a Transit Day Ticket (5$) as it is good on buses, the light rail, and the streetcar loop that serves the city centre, East Bank, and NW district (a number of decent pubs there) . The light rail travels on 5th & 6th and during the day and early evening is fairly frequent. When I used to wait for my last bus connection heading home in the evenings there'd be three (if not four) trains that went by before my bus arrived. Southeast Portland (where I live) is also fairly "rich" pub crawl territory, shoot there are two actual brew pubs (with their own brewing operations) not more than a five minute walk from my place, one I frequent while doing laundry (the washateria is just across the street).

To bad you couldn't take a full week as a number of pubs have "cheapie days (like Monday's & Wednesdays when happy hour lasts all day. The other brewpub in my "hood" has 10$ pitchers all day Sunday and all they serve is what they brew, no "guest taps" or industrial swill.

You will discover just why they call this place "Beervana".

If you want good Barbecue, that may be a bit of a challenge though. Dead fish on a plate on the other hand, you're "home" here.

Sounds cool! I love your "brew bus" idea, if I had any real money I'd fund you (lol)!

I wish I could stay a whole week, but I can't afford to miss too many days of work. I could stretch it to fly back Tuesday instead of Monday if I work it right.. I need to make 27 hours a week to cover bills, but if I scrimp a bit I can save an extra days worth of pay, cover the hotel fare one more night, and give me Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon evenings to go out. Id fly home early Tuesday and spend Tuesday afternoon at home.. recovering (lol)!

Definitely NOT looking for bbq in Portland! OMG, with so much fresh fish, I'd be stupid to! Good fish is hard to find here in Austin, I plan on eating the ocean empty of sea life if I come up there! ;-P

Maybe I'll buy a paper and look for jobs.. heh heh. I'm getting kind of tired of 100+ degree days one after another. :wow: I've never lived in the Pacific Northwest, I was in Portland a month for training back in my younger days and really enjoyed it!

Now if I can just stay at home, avoid the strip clubs, only buy 1 new item of content per payday, and not do anything stupid like break another body part :blank: this could happen!

Do you have any Oktoberfest-y things up there? If so, I'll work extra hard to be ready in October!

Not going to re enter a full explanation (that can be found on the Realistic Renders...NOT thread) however her is the pic I posted the other day with the flag corrected and several more surfacing adjustments.

This is my Lady Meggan Grande, Leela's adoptive mum who in her early days was an Olympic champions swimmer for the UK. I wanted to do a "poolside" scene and found this really nice indoor pool freebie. As it was a textured .obj, I had to make a lot of adjustments (again more detailed in the other thread). Suffice to say it was a real learning experience and a good one at that. The Union Jack was not part of the set, I created that with a plane primitive, a .jpg image and bump map from the Fabricator.

Lady Meg is build on Genesis/V5 with Fabiana's Druscilla Goth skin map (using the V4 UV) V4 head shape, Dye Trying's Genesis morphs and Thoren's Body/Head Morph resource kits.

Her hair is Koz's Long hair Evolution (hey, it still works and looks nice). Her bathing suit is Sickle Yield's Classic Swimwear with the UK flag motif added.
