DraggonStorm's legacy lives on!

Looks great! Though, I'm curious as to whether there will be a male version or add-on down the line...

Last time I saw a post from Zev0, I seem to remember him saying that was considering, but I could be wrong; check out his thread.

That was the Genesis 3 version. As nicstt says the possibility was not closed off for Genesis 8 last I saw.

You lay the odds, I'll take the bets. Shall we? And I double checked. Zev studiously ignored every question about a Male-8 version.

...while happy to see this, sadly not investing in G8 as I just can't afford to.

Sure, if you prefer a Ken doll. Or aren't intested in using it as a Merchant Resource.

If Zev0 and Discobob were to release a Skin Builder 8 for the guys, I would buy it on release, even if I had to use a credit card! But I do not expect them to, because the market for all things men is just so much smaller than for the women. Such a shame.

I personally don't mind a Ken doll. In three years, I've only done one render with the "anatomical elements" and then discovered, (because the "element" was "at attention,") that I couldn't even post it on my DA account, even though it was mostly obscured by the couple pose!

Of course, I'd prefer an SB8 for the guys. I just don't see it happening. The vendors need to eat and pay their bills, after all! laugh

Why to do a male version ? I mean why Skin Builder can't use Female textures with both genders ?

Skin Builder is expensive, I doubt people would pay twice for the same product, the same scripts.

    Dangly bits and Merchant Resource.

Well I asked about doing portwine birthmarks and was told users can extend with a script and the proper image templates SB8 to handle port wine birthmarks but I don't know if that extensability extends to adding a completely different UV set and the needed image templates too.

SB3 and now SB8 do a great job of making skin materials that can be used on the males; if you have the UV Swap products and if you're creating them for your own use. Not all of the painted on brows will look "right" on a guy, but you can always use fiber mesh brows instead.

A male version would work much the same as current SB products, but the four base skin materials could be less delicate, with smaller areolae and nipples and more "rugged" looking hands. Plus support for male Anatomical Elements. Other options that could be changed to be more masculine include the brows, veins, and pores. Makeup could be changed to be more like warpaint, less precise and more "wild". A facial hair tab could be added with options for stubble, mustaches, and beards. And I'd personally love the abilty to add grime to the fingernails and nail beds! (In nearly 50 years as an adult, I haven't known very many men whose nails always looked like they just came from getting a manicure!)

"Expensive" is relative. Many of us purchase multiple characters as much to add their skin materials to our runtime as for the shape morphs. Even if we can get those characters at a great discount and average $5 per character, that's still only seven character materials for the same cost as the SB8 intro price. With Skin Builder, we can use the included skins to create exactly the skin tone we need or we can use any G3/G8 Base Female skin materials we have in our runtime, and make unique materials for our characters.

I have SB3 and I'm still buying SB8, even though I could always create the skin and presets using SB3 on a G3 female and then apply my presets on a G8 female. I know SB8 has a lot of improvements over SB3, and besides that, I want to support Zev0 and Discobob.

And as @evilded777 pointed out, Skin Builder is a Merchant Resource. If you are a vendor, the Merchant Resource license is important. As the Skin Builder products only allow MR usage of the supported figure, G3F for SB3* and G8F for SB8, a Skin Builder product for G8M would be very useful for anyone creating male characters to sell.

*Zev0 amended the MR license to allow use on G8F, provided the character sold supported both G3F and G8F.

ETA: Zev0 Clarified the MR llicense usage for both SB3 and SB8 in the official thread, but here's what he said:

    Zev0 said:
For SkinBuilder 3 you only allowed to sell for Genesis 3 Female characters, but you can include a Genesis 8 character morphs set where the skins are shared, that is allowed. But NO Genesis 8 Female  Standalone character is allowed for sale using Skin Builder 3. For SkinBuilder 8, same rule applies, you can include a Genesis 3 Female character morph version, But NO standalone Genesis 3 Female  character is allowed for sale using Skin Builder 8. The native figure for the respective Merchant resources must be present. Hope that makes sense.

For the record, I asked Zev recently if he was going to do that, and he told me that it would depend on the schedule.

So not closed, not a certainty.

Ask Darwin's Mishap as he does many Mediterranean characters. Try to match not his paler or darker ones but the ones in between.

  • I cannot find anywhere, the order of events that need to happen to successfully create and deploy a skin using SB8. (That may exist somewhare, but I haven't found it.)  Here is what I have found via experimentation:

Important: Most steps here require that you hit an "Apply" button to actually implement the addition or adjustment. Then wait until a pop-up appears ttelling you it is complete. Then you must dismiss the pop-pup by h.tting the enter key on your keyboard clicking on its "OK" button with your mouse. Throughout the list below I'll refer to this as WfP.

    1) Open Daz Studio 4.10 (DS).

    2) Load the character that is to have the skin. Be sure it is selected in the scene panel.

    3) Open Skin Builder 8(SB8)  in DS.

    4) In the SB8 "Settings" tab enter a path to a temp directory.

    5) Select the "Utilities" tab and then the "Save Skin and Material Presets" Tab

    6) Enter names for the "Final Textures Directory," the "Materials Presets Directory," and a name for the character in the corresponding boxes. (Nothing to apply here, what you type in sticks.)

    7) Click on the "Skin" tab then the "Base" tab.

    8) Set the sliders as desired. (Usually I change one or more of the three texture sliders to get color I want.)

    9) Click on "Build Skin." Wait a minute or so. WfP.

    19) Click on the "Nipple Adj" tab and make any adjustments there that you want. Then hit the "Apply Color Adjustment" button. WfP.

    11) Click on the "Color Blend" tab to blend with a solid color if you want. WfP. (I've never used this -- left the top slider on 0. Did not hit the apply button).

    12) Click on the "Overlays" Tab.

    13) Here successively click on any of the 9 tabs that inidcate an attribute that you want to add to the skin. For each one you use, after adjusting or selecting hit the apply button. WfP.

    14) Do the same as in 13 with "Makeup," "Brows," "Eyes," "Lashes," "Nails," and  "Gens," Apply each one individually and WfP.  If you don't want to adjust them, do nothing.

    15) When done with all that, select the "Utilities" tab and then the "Save Skin and Material Presets" Tab.

    16) Click on each of the "Create Material Preset" tabs for the presets you want to save. WfP.

    17) Done!

Notes: The main sliders under "Makeup," "Brows," "Eyes," and  "Lashes," give you a number of sytles or shapes to choose from. If you make a mistake with one of them , hit undo afterward and redo it.  I am unsure what happens if you don't undo first. Does it replace the feature or does it add to the feature? I am not sure of the effects of brow height. There is a numerical slider that defaults to 0 but ranges between -50 and 50. There is no explanation that I can find.  It would be nice to know what the numbers imply without having to build the skin, save it, apply it, and then render the figure. Too bad the Devs didn't add a one or two sentence explanation.

This work-flow / order-of-events was not at all obvious to me and required trial and error to figure out. And it still could be incorrect. Hard to know. Its not listed anywhere that I can find. The fact that you have hit a button labelled "Build Skin" before you actually make the entire skin, was confusing to me as is the fact that nothing at all is saved unless you go to a subpanel of the utilites tab. IMHO a button labeld "Build Skin" should be the last thing you hit. Just Saying.

Do the makeup material presets save individually (eyes, lips, cheeks)? Are they overlays that can be mixed and matched as makeup options when selling a character or are they integrated with the UV map?

Looks like a great product. Thanks!

  • Among other problems I'm having with this program, it doesn't have the undo tab at the bottom of the screen, so I can't undo the last thing I did. I have to close the program and use the edit option to undo it.

  • What is the difference between Skin Builder 8 and Skin Builder 3? Aren't the G3F and G8F UVs the same?

There's an undo option at the top right, on the row with Iray Preview, Redo and Close.

I wish there was a male skin builder (with makeup options too lol)

@andolaurina, The UVs are essentially the same, but the G8 figures now use an addon for the eyelashes. If you have one or the other Skin Builder product, you can create the materials for the supported generation and then apply them to the other, for personal use. You can even use Sloshwerks' UV Swap and create materials for your male characters, too. Again, for personal use. Basically load the supported character into the scene, use Skin Builder to create the materials and create the presets. After your presets are saved, you would then apply them to the other generation/gender figure.

If you plan on creating characters to sell and want to use Skin Builder to create skin materials for those characters, you will need to use the Skin Builder 3 for Genesis 3 Females, and Skin Builder 8 for Genesis 8 Females. The exception, for SB3 at least, is if you release a product that includes both a Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 female of the same character, using the same materials. That is allowed. But if you are looking to use this as a Merchant Resource, it is always best to read the documentation, and ask Zev0 if you have any questions after that.

Does anyone know what the latest Skin Builder 8 update does?

is it possible to add more skin resources to this product? Like different skins, maybe different blemishes, or even tattoos?
