gravity, newton shoulda studied cantalopes instead.

No one would believe that he was sitting under a cantaloupe tree and one fell on his head

....but that would infer cantaloupes migrate.

The first mention of the fruit in the English literature was in 1739, 12 years after the death of Mr. Newton. Unless during an un-chronicled visit to Armenia he happened to be clouted by one, though that would be an impossibility of physics as they grow on vines rather than trees, unless he was either struck by one tossed from an upper window (thus it's motion being considered a result of the throw) or the melon patch was on a roof. one happened to break from its vine just at the right moment, roll off, and fall on his head as he was passing by on the way to lunch, or was struck by one accidentally dropped by a bird passing overhead.

    As to the third theory...

While a coconut has a husk that can easily be grasped by say, a bird's talons it is a known fact that the thrust to weight ratio involved, invalidates the idea that a single small or even medium sized bird can carry one in flight.  A cantaloupe (while about the same size) is a bit wetter and denser and, thus heavier.  Furthermore it has a smoother outer coating (particularly the European variety of the fruit) thus making it extremely difficult to be grasped by the beak or talons.  This of course refutes the theory of the apple which fell on his noggin being caused by a cantaloupe, accidentally dropped by a member of the hirundo rustica species passing overhead, which subsequently crashed through the branches and inadvertently caused said apple above him to become dislodged from it's branch while the cantaloupe bounced off in the opposite direction behind the tree he was sitting under and rolled into a nearby pond unnoticed much to the chagrin of a pair of ducks who were bottoms up while foraging under the water.

It might have killed him.  surprise  Then where would we be?  Einstein was a couple hundred years away!

    What about arboreal cantaloupes?

    I got a new avatar I think?
  • Sfariah DSfariah D Posts: 26,263
I feel like my story ideas suck. I got Doc What's her name for one problem but have a character named Kurt. I did a pastel drawing of him once. I get a lot of comments that he looks like a Na'Vi from Avatar. I call him a blue kitty elf with a strange tail. He doesn't have enough fingers to give the middle finger. Probably Doc might be confused for the Doc in snow white except she isn't a dwarf but looks like a regular size human. My Kurt reminds me of Avatar even though he is human sized and can breath normal air. Of course there are no blue elves that are named Kurt in any fiction. Just like if I add a Thor everyone would immediately think of the mythology instead of wondering if Thor is really hanging out with his neice not that Loki and Thor are at all concerned related other than from the same mythology. Ooh I love my Kurt even though he is like the Na'Vi but can teleport.

I tend to think as a reader, if you are writing fiction, avoiding any popular tropes, characters etc is highly preferable.

The last thing I would ever want to read is some cringy fanfic based on something someone else created.

Historical fiction is fine and Science Fiction, fantasy etc, there is a wealth of myths and legends to draw from and enough alternative spellings of names to not seem to be parroting things like the Marvel Universe using Thor etc, if you are going to use Norse mythology you look at the sources and totally ignore anything our contemporaries have done on the subject.

Or you come up with something entirely original and unique not resembling anything in modern literature, media etc.
