Like the point I read about the textballoons, it's true that in the classic way balloons have been used is not a good solution for 3D .
In the comic link by DWG I saw that the maker user see-through textballoons in order to make them more in harmony with the surrounding panel, which is already a step away from classic comicbook making.

This discussion has my sincere interest because I have been working towards a 3D comic for quite some time now.
The points mentioned here, especially about the textballoons, is something that I am still wresteling with and is quite a barricate to overcome.

Sometimes see-through text balloons can make it harder to read if there's not a lot of contrast between the color of the text and the image behind them.

For 3D text, how about adding a drop shadow?

I don't have it myself so I don't know if it'll work, but this Daz content for making 3D bubbles has a lot of morphs and morphs can be combined. One of the morph looks like it is pointed on the ends so maybe that can be used as the tail part of a text balloon.

I personally would not recommend using 3D text balloons as part of rendering a scene to be used in a comic. Instead, this should be done more traditionally, using thumbnails to set up where you will place the captions and balloons prior to setting up the scene and rendering. This will give you an idea of where the optimal areas would be (meaning where the balloons and captions would least affect or cover details in the scene). Then add these balloons and boxes in post work. This is the most efficient way to do it and makes sure you can correct any problems later on.

Following traditional protocol, 3D balloons can still be used. Just render a bunch of commonly used shapes as PNG stock images and customize them later in postwork to fit the speaker's words.

(I'm assuming when you say "add these balloons and boxes in post work", you were talking about traditional 2D.)

There was a text and emotion prop set for sale at renderosity designed to make manga style comics (rendered in Poser with the models). Or maybe it was PoserPros, PoserPros had a lot of great stuff, especially for Aiko3 and Hiro3. Ahh.... Aiko19........
