HW, much appreciated! I lack some of those tools, but it is helpful to see the effort that goes into making such a great render. No magic IRAY button, for sure.
The term that confused me was "tone map adjustment," and similar comments. I did some searches, and now it it clearer.
Is tone mapping in Affinity superior to PSE?
pleasure - I have been working through some old images for about twomonths taking notes looking for a style to work up an unpublished book - that was the work flow that seemed best - I wont be using the water colour paper though
Ah I didnt know you could so tone mapping in pse!! I see you need a plug in - so I dont know what it's like sorry
I bought affinity quite cheaply and have been looking forways to use it - it has a whole lot of tone mapping presets, which are handy. The liquify tool is super good. You could overlay a cross hatching pattern on an image then move the hatching round to suit the contours.
I'll look for some old images and tone map and then post them in the NPR thread . I've been writing a dear reader letter for 13 year old US kids all day so am brain dead ;)
I'm still struggling with inspiration, despite my field trip to the natural history museum. I thought maybe doing something with DNA strands. Remember the movie, Fantastic Voyage, in which they shrink a human medical team and insert them in a sick person to perform micro-medicine? Maybe in the future a team of medical specialists will be injected to do micro surgery on DNA.
Modeled a helix.
Replicated some multicolored primitives on the helix and turned the helix invisible.
Duplicated the replicated DNA strand and rotated so that pairs of similar primitives align. So far so good.
Unfortunately, the intertwined strands don't have correct depth perception. They look like they intersect instead of circle each other.
Suggestions for overcoming this optical illusion welcome.
Brains... Not sure where everyone was going with that, so probably not a good idea to joke about borrowing someones brain to help with Carrara. I do promise to give it back though. O_o
On a more serious note, some amazing renders & great stuff! Had no idea Carrara ould do so many different things-- esp. making your own props
Anyway, here's revision 001.
Had to figure out why a road roller would be in a conservation awareness render-- otherwise it's just a distraction and the whole concept is "no future." Added some signs and a kiddo playing on it to hopefully add context.
@Diomede ... mmm.. maybe you could exagerate the helix size in width and depth a bit more and then with lighting and shadows you will get that perception you are after
nice start @Tynkere it's always good to get a start... yes Carrara can model and so much more..
when I had my appendix removed many many years ago, the hospital wouldn't let me go home till I had a feed of brains.... I managed to get around that problem ... without the nurses finding out!
First I rendered a rooster minus his head and then I rendered a dodo minus its body and saved them out as PNG files
with PSE I combined them both to get a Roodo bird!
then I set up a scene with a mad scientist ( there's always a mad scientist ) in his lab working on the project to bring back the extinct Dodo bird ( he failed miserably ). I used a plane to use the combined Roodo PNG image to show him up on the table.. I also modeled the straw bales, glasses and scatters the other day and used them.
then I adjusted the final render to get my final image.
Nice work Ted, great lateral thinking - you could try an isometric camera maybe, making the back strands less dark in post would help too plus a few toonpro lines?

Beaut stuff the Wizard Bruce - love the narrative!!! and the child really adds a little depth.

Stezza, that is brilliant, seriously!! The hair has me cracking up :)
"... one-third of the UK’s bee population has disappeared over the past decade and 24 per cent of Europe’s bumblebees are now threatened with extinction.
Given that bees pollinate around one-third of food crops and 90 per cent of wild plants, which in turn provide food for livestock, the implications of this ecological disaster are alarming for biodiversity, the food chain and, ultimately, our ability to feed ourselves."
This work is modelled vaguley after The Beekeepers and the Birdnester by Pieter Bruegel the Elder , 1568.
Stezza - very nice concept of the used computer gear & cassette tape, mad scientist/Dodo-rooster looks great as well !!!
Headwax - excellent render and history lesson on Mendel. Rhino looks fabulous too. Thanks for the work-flow. Australia exports bees to oversea's countries.
Diomede - nice history pics, hope the DNA strand setup works out looks like an interesting start
MAJourney - hope the zombies don't get to those brains
Tynkere - love the museum exhibit idea
UB - hope you get those brain juices of yours working
TangoAlpha - can you spare the time to join in with a few renders ? Extinct Airbus A380 ?
Silene - would love to see some cloned Neanderthals joining in the action !!

Two days ago, I told my wife the theme of the Challenge. She said, "You should do one with bees."

Great minds.
Well, y'all's two great minds, plus my feeble mind. LOL. If you remember a recent thread asking questions about the displacement brush, my answer included a screenshot of the model I was working on at the time - a bee. I have given up on that bee project, at least for this challenge. I'm really struggling with ideas, lately. Lots of small concepts to start, but I'm not striking something I want to carry through with.
I think I need to do a series of absurdly silly renders to reboot my system.
displacement 02 brush model turns grey and brush menu appears.jpg

Is tone mapping in Affinity superior to PSE?
I think you probably know by now from the answers that it isn't available in PSE.. but Affinity does have it and also HDRI import/export as well, as HW mentioned as well as some other cool stuff so it is a handy piece of software to have along side of PSE and is half the price of PSE as well which is good
thanks for your comments on my image as well... missed it first time round ..
I shouldn't have done it but when we bought our first DVD player back in the whenever decade it was, after watching the movie the missus asked what do we do now.. I said you have to rewind it.. after 10 minutes of her looking at the remote control I couldn't hold it in any longer... she was not a happy chappy
Very nice Bunyip02, much more Drama!! I wonder what would happen if you cranked up the caustics and dropped in a little fresnel???? Thank you for the kind comment too.
UB yes great brains think alike !!!! I would still go with bees if I were you and Dioemede! Mine is just a filler image (I wont be doing bees) , I was attracted to the weird masks and an attempt to Bregulise a work but stuffed them up ha ha :)
Mystarra lookg forward to your dinasaur rebellion :)

This is also worth exploring https://fstoppers.com/post-production/ultimate-guide-frequency-separation-technique-8699 I think, for simplifying parts of an image not sure?

Nice brain :)
Is it this one https://www.daz3d.com/daz-brain ?
Looks like it comes with textures?
a found them didnt even know I had them...
HW is correct. It comes with shaders. If there is a product that I am an expert on, this is it. :)
Thanks for giving me an excuse for opening Carrara, even if it was only for 5 minutes. :(
lump stood alone in line for brains, the one she found was sort of rotten and insane ....
Thanks for the shader tips, UB.
That brain looks familiar. Is it Abby someone?
Maybe Abby Normal?

was mixing up with a different song

oh yeah, shaders! See, my brain's an endangered organ. Blame it on school. Too much work = brain goes extinct
Dodo - De-extinction!
This one took several renders -
First I rendered a rooster minus his head and then I rendered a dodo minus its body and saved them out as PNG files
with PSE I combined them both to get a Roodo bird!

Here's something on worked on a while ago. "Medieval Beekepers."

_pretty cool _
_where did the robot come from ??

Forgot to add
- Bunyip, love the latest robot image. Think I might have lamb chops for dinner.
- Stezza, the dodo morph is brilliant. great movement and exprssion on the scientist. Another classic.
- Headwax, thanks for the suggestions regarding the DNA helix. Maybe that idea can be salvaged.
Mr Squiggle turned 60 yesterday and a limited coin set was released to commemorate the occasion... yep.. I bought a set.. only $15

Hello ed3D, Thanks
Robot is SRB 800 - https://www.daz3d.com/srb-800
Thanks.
Lamb chops with mint sauce, honey carrots, snow-peas, & garlic mashed potato - yummy !!!!
Thanks - I like Plan-B much betterer as well !
