I have a questions on the Best Storytelling catagory. Does that need a text 'story' with it or the picture tell the story? Or doen't it matter. I'm working on my first entry at the moment and think it fits that catagory.

It's up to you. Remember that clarity is key for this category. If you feel the story gets conveyed only through your render, then you can add that. If you feel the render is clear but want to play it safe, adding a title that will clue us in would be advisable. Or if your render needs context to be understood, then adding a short text to explain what's happening will help us out. :)

    Thanks Fenixphoenix smiley

  • I think I will enter this year, and am currently render a first image for the contest. Still need to decide what specific category I will enter, since I doubt 10 years using DAZ Studio would allow me to enter the New User one. wink

    Lol. No, probably not. :)

Does the image need to be rendered in Daz Studio? Is Poser okay as long as I'm using mostly products from Daz3D?

No, the image can be rendered in any 3D program you wish to use.

For this one I bow to @FenixPhoenix and go by the answer given they gave.

    Rules

    No. 4

would suggest it is ok to use Poser wink

    Yep!

    4.  Entries can use any render engine/program of choice as long as the main focus is the male figure.

    And, yep!

Contest update. Listen up, there's a lot of important updates. …

    [snip]

Thank you for posting the updates here, so we all see them. Updates in the first post might get missed, (though I assume those have been revised as necessary.)

I think your reasoning for the decision on open voting makes perfect sense. I support you in this 100 percent.

Yes, I'm trying to keep everything current and letting folks know when I update things. I'm 20K words into my current project, but I'm trying to pop in at least once a day to see what's going on. Though the forum bots are hexing me with that signing out thing again!

I think I'll be taking an evening to see what I can whip up. ;)

Sitting back and waiting.... Anything yet?  Looks over at entry thread... Nope, not yet...  Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. :)

I do want to say, I'm really enjoying the entries so far. Thank you for participating.

Okay, I think I hit all the high notes. Back to writing!

I just added my first entry and I think this time around this rainning men is going to be a blast!

  • Finally got one up- hope the subtlety of what was going on behind the scenes in making it shows up. XD

  • Wow! A bunch of entries almost exploded into the entry thread while I wasn't looking. Nice!

  • Just checking in. I've been laid up with a scratched cornea so bright computer screens and I are NOT friends right now. I did get to see the new entries in the entry thread. Very nice! Keep those entries comping and I'll check in again in case there are any questions as I'm healing and able to deal with the lights. I hope it's all cleared up by the end of the week.

    get well!

  • I'm feeling much better thank you! I hope everyone here in the states is having a Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Can you believe it's December already? Where did November go so quickly! Well, it's one month down. We have one more month to get those renders entered. I'm sure people have lots of new toys to try out with the sales from the last few months so get busy folks! Render those men!

  • I had one rendering today, but darn it I ended up with a half-finished render due to not calculating the time needed correctly.  Ugh.

Anyone else having problems uploading their entries today? I just keep getting 'uploading...' and nothing. I was planning to upload my first 2 entries, guess I'll leave it till tomorrow

    edit

Still having problems 'next day' - tried 2 computers and 2 different browsers on each. Anyone got a work-a-round? - I've never had this problems before posting.

Day 3 - Figured it out - the file I was trying to upload had an & in the filename. So entry 2 became entry 1 (because it uploaded), and 1 became 2 after I figured it out. smiley now I can go back to playing with entry 3.

  • I've just read the rules again and noticed "All images will be entered for Best Image with the exception of the new categories listed below".

Which would mean that any entry entered for either/both the Storytelling and/or Leon special categories is ineligible for the Best Image prizes. Is that correct ?

I'd missed that; shame back to the drawing board for at least 1 image I guess.

It seems a bit odd to me, which is why I'm double checking.

Though we don't mind if entries for the storytelling category are also entered for the Best Image Category (I doubt the same person will win both categories since we'll be looking at different criteria to determine the winner), it's ultimately @Knittingmommy's decision and we'll abide by it. So let's wait to see what she decides :).

  • Oh, btw, before I forget. The entries so far are excellent! We'll be providing feedback to every storytelling entry once the competition ends and after a winner is announced. Our feedback will be constructive, going over what we love, what we might not have understood and possible ideas on how to expand on your concept. If you'd like NOT to receive feedback, please just make a note on your entry stating so. Also, for those who've already entered, would you rather get the feedback in private or in a forum thread (maybe we'll set a forum thread just for the feedback to avoid boycotting the competition's one)?

Personally I would like to see the feedback in a thread, it would be nice to see not only where I go wrong or right but also learn from others, but I do understand if others don't feel this way.

That's an error. Possibly a hold-over from when I was editing the copy from the previous year. All images will be entered for Best Image. We don't have any exceptions this year. I'll track that down and fix the error. Sorry for any confusion that caused. It was purely a technical oversight on my part.

Rest assured ALL IMAGES will be entered for the Best Image category and that category takes precidence over any others.

Edit: The original post is now fixed to reflect the correction.

@scorpio No, going back isn't necessary. The error was mine and all images are entered in the Best Image category no matter which other categories they might be tagged. Sorry for the confusion.

OK thanks; not really a problem not got much further than the drawing board stage yet anyway.

It's OK for me to give feedback in a thread too.

  • Okay, so assuming most people would be okay with receiving feedback via a forum thread, let's do that. If, however, there is anyone who would prefer to receive their feedback via PM, just add a note where you posted your entry to let us know :).

I wouldn't mind reciving feedback in a thread!

I had a few quick questions (sorry if I missed where any of these were already clarified):

    1. Is there are a preferred minimum / maximum pixel height or width for the full-sized attachments of our entries?

    2. I know DeviantArt and gallery postings are allowed, but can we post our renders elsewhere (such as Instagram) during the contest? Or for anywhere else do we need to wait until the contest is over before posting them?

    3. I'm assuming we retain rights to the images we enter into the contest?

I'm looking forward to entering, and had a lot of fun putting together my renders. I've got three renders just about ready to finalize and post. (Also, feedback would definitely be great). :-D

  • @SBibb,

    1. Is there are a preferred minimum / maximum pixel height or width for the full-sized attachments of our entries?

As far as I know (based on entries for the past competitions and those entered so far), there isn't. Just whatever fits your vision. Although I do recall @Knittingmommy asking people to include a high-res attachment to their post so people can see it (without losing detail) when the voting commences.

    2. I know DeviantArt and gallery postings are allowed, but can we post our renders elsewhere (such as Instagram) during the contest? Or for anywhere else do we need to wait until the contest is over before posting them?

I would think it's alright, but @Knittingmommy has the final decision on this.

    3. I'm assuming we retain rights to the images we enter into the contest?

Yes, you retain rights to your images (as there is nothing stated within the rules which would contradict this).
