I could swear a max size was stated, including the condition to attch the image rather than link it, but it seems to be gone. What I would find was..

Make sure you image size is less than 2KMB
    Use jpg instead of png

But that may just be a tip in relation to attachments. Not quite sure.

I had a few quick questions (sorry if I missed where any of these were already clarified):

    1. Is there are a preferred minimum / maximum pixel height or width for the full-sized attachments of our entries?

Not really Make the image as large as you need. Don't make it too small. You want people to be able to see it in the voting thread. The only limitations are the forum software for viewing. I'd prefer the attachment be whatever the full render size was. This is one reason why I request the attachment. It just makes it easy than going through the forum software because sometimes it just borks it up when I'm creating the voting thread.

    2. I know DeviantArt and gallery postings are allowed, but can we post our renders elsewhere (such as Instagram) during the contest? Or for anywhere else do we need to wait until the contest is over before posting them?

Personal galleries are fine, like DeviantArt or the Daz Gallery here. Posting like Instagram should perferably be made after the contest. Frankly, it's not something I check and it's not super critical.

    3. I'm assuming we retain rights to the images we enter into the contest?

Definitely. The artist keeps all rights to their artwork.

I'm looking forward to entering, and had a lot of fun putting together my renders. I've got three renders just about ready to finalize and post. (Also, feedback would definitely be great). :-D

I'm looking forward to seeing it!

@FenixPhoenix Thanks for stepping in to answer. All your answers were right on the money.

Yes, this is strictly because of forum restrictions. I don't think the forum allows any files larger than 2K MB.(Fixed that! It's a math thing, not my best subject!) And yes, usually saving as jpg poses no problems with size.

  • My pleasure, @knittingmommy. How's your eye doing?

  • @FenixPhoenix It's doing much better! Thanks for asking. I think it's almost healed. I have a followup appointment next week to see if there's any scarring. Hopefully, I get a clean bill of health. :)

That's good to read! I also hope you get a clean bill of health! Eye injuries can take a while to heal so hopefully yours will show no further complications.

    Oops. 2MB, not 2K. lol

I'm not sure about the forum limit on file size, but I do know the Galleries limit is 2MB. If you submit a file to the Galleries that is somewhat larger, the code that creates the various sizes for the thumbnails and gallery page will also size the original to fit the limit. Unfortunately, it does so by making the dimensions of the original smaller, which can lose detail.

My go to solution is to use Irfanview, 64-bit, that has the built-in option to set the file size of jpegs when you save them. There are a ton of addons, but I only use the base software. It will even open my PSD (Photoshop) files. When I save as a jpg with quality at 100 and the filesize limit set to 2000KB, the resulting image is always under 2M and the quality is the highest possible for that file size.

I've used Irfanview for, (cough,) decades, and can highly recommend it. I hope this info is helpful.

@FenixPheonix and @Knittingmommy : Thanks for clearing up my questions! I've gone ahead and reduced the file size to just under 2 MB and gotten them posted. :-D

For now, I'll wait until after the contest before I post them anywhere outside of the Daz forums/gallery. In the meantime, I'm excited to see the rest of the entries as they come in. It's been fun looking at them so far. :-)

I'm always getting those little letters confused! I'll fix my post above. I supposed those letters do make a difference. lol

I've just submitted my entry, I hope I did it correctly.  If not, just let me know and I'll fix it!

I've never entered this contest before, because of the "no watermarks/signatures" rule.  I was very happy to see that it's been changed!  My entry is nothing serious, I just wanted to have a little bit of fun ;)

I think it's okay. I actually had to look twice before finding the watermark so it's not readily apparent which is good. It kind of blends inn with all the reflections.

Oh good!  Yeah, I try to make my watermark partially transparent so that it does blend in a bit.  I don't like for it to draw attention.

This is a fun contest!  There aren't nearly enough renders out there starring males, so this is a great incentive to make some!

Image is done! But It looks rather graphic as it's a war scene. I have already send a message to Knittingmommy for review.

OK, so I read the rules and have a couple of questions:

    a) My 1st entry I entered in the Storytelling Category but feel it is probably better as a Toon Category. Am I allowed to change the category?

    b) My second question has been answered by the rules already: My 2nd entry I want to replace. It will still be a Storytelling Entry but a different image and a different story. This is allowed per the rules.

KnittingMommy will have to give the official ruling, but many previous entries (including mine) list multiple categories for the same entry.  If we are all correct, you may enter in both categories, assuming it qualifies for both.

As far as I know, you can switch categories and entries up until the end of the competition. You can also submit an entry to multiple categories, since no rules have been written about that. ;)

Thanks both of you. I'll just enter the 1st one in both categories then.

Yep, check your PMs. I messaged you back. I think it looks within the TOS. I've seen much more graphic than that in the Daz Gallery and forums so I think it's safe.

You don't have to change categories. Just add the additional category you wish to be entered in. Entries can be in mulitple categories. They do have to be tagged so I don't accidentally miss putting an entry in a category. Otherwise untagged entries are only entered into the main category. I have tried in the past to put entries in categories they weren't tagged for if I see one, but it's easy to missed if not properly tagged.

    b) My second question has been answered by the rules already: My 2nd entry I want to replace. It will still be a Storytelling Entry but a different image and a different story. This is allowed per the rules.

Yes, entries can be changed or updated until the last minute of the contest. Once I close the contest you can't update anything. Just update the entry in the original post.

Got it. Sorry @gerterasmus, I didn't see it earlier.

It looks like it all posted correctly. :)

@AlmightyQUEST I like the process on this one. I think it would fit in the Toon category. While it says toon, it's a little broader than that. I should really consider naming it NPR, but wasn't sure who except readers of the thread would know what that was. Anyway, you can tag that entry as Toon as well. It would fit.

Please remember to tag your entries. I've noticed a couple of entries that can be in more than one category, but they aren't tagged. It would really help me out so I don't miss categorizing any entries while making the voting threads which will be very soon! So please, if you're a PA, tag your entries PA, if it's a Toon or any type of NPR image tag it Toon, etc. If an image is tagged with a category, it's entered in all the tagged categories and the main category. The main category is determined first based on the votes. All the other categories are determined after the main categories so if you're worried about tagging a category will knock you out of the main category, it won't.

I hope I answered all the questions. If not, poke me and tell me I missed something.

I hope everyone who celebrated it had a wonderful Christmas. I didn't get online once and spent the day with my family. It was very relaxing. :)

  • Updated the prize categories: added a new prize under Best Image by a New User

    Thanks, @gerterasmus! :)

  • Ah, I forgot about the toon category! Thanks for the reminder, I'll edit the post today.

@KnittingMommy - Hello, I am a new user of DAZ 3D studio, and I would love to enter the contest, if I manage to render the scenes, that is, as I am currently suffering from some unidentified problem causing my renders to be "completed" unfinished.frown

I would like to ask you whether the rule saying "Need to enter at least two renders, preferably three." means I have to make two or three renders of the same scene, or whether it can be two or three different scenes.

Problem is the number of seconds by default with iRay renders are set to run 2 hours only (60 seconds * 120 minutes = 7200 seconds). Set that to 0 and the number of iterations to 5000 or 10000 and that is usually enough to satisfy most people.

Thank you for the advice, I will try it. I found the number of seconds, but I have no idea what do you mean by "number of iterations". I must be blind, because I see no such thing in the settings. Do you perhaps mean "Max Samples", please?

  • To change the Minimum Samples, click the gear icon above it , Parameter Settings, turn Limits off and Accept. Set to 1 000 or something

    Select Max Samples 5 000 - 10 000

Crank Max Time all the way up
