I think I might have solved the problem just by removing all the RAM sticks and putting them back in. Windows now just says "Installed Memory: 12 GB" and the Task Manager is showing the following:
Total: 12279
Cached: 2647
Available: 9695
Free: 7323
If that sounds right (damn though, you only have 7 to work with when there's 12 installed?), I won't do anything further. Thanks very much for the information and suggestions!
Free takes off what's in use for caching, but the cache can be dropped if it's needed for running applications - what matters is available memory, you have about the same as me (a little more in fact).
