Thank you Fenix, I'll be looking into those advice! Somewhat short of time right now though :)

My pleasure, Carola. If you do feel up to tweaking your entries, you're welcome to share them here :).

Okay, got the second render finished for the picture. I think it is a bit distracting because it is so big, I probably should have dulled it down with some grey. Or replaced it with another smaller picture frame. I changed the framing to make him bigger, that does make the warm firelight more subtle but I hope there is enough for the contrast I was after. There is some geometry issue with the lamp, event spinning it around there is light leaking around the top, that needs fixing with postwork. Had to tweak the tone mapping setting to clear up allot of fireflies. But all told it was an interesting and fun exercise. smiley

Interestingly, I like the picture but your previous composition worked better for me. So I took that into photoshop to try and see how you could crop so we could focus more on the figure and his relationship to the framed picture. Here are some things I came up with using the Fibonacci Spiral (aka the Golden Spiral):

Now the trick is moving things a bit around to follow the lines dictated by the Fibonacci Spiral Guide. So perhaps something like so:

    • I would get rid of the fan and the lamp behind the sofa so they don't distract.
    • You could move the bookshelf so the right edge lines up with the new guide. Of course, you'll then have to make the painting slightly smaller so it's still centered with the bookshelf while still staying within the curve.
    • Now that we've zoomed in, the jaguar is pulling some focus away from the figure. So I would get rid of it and perhaps replace him with the pot you have there to create some symmetry.

Of course, rather than have the left side so dark, you could lighten it up as you did for your newest piece.

I was going for a rough Rule of Thirds, by eye, more than Golden Ratio. That worked better with the third warm to two thirds cool I was going for. The picture and bookcase could be smaller and more centered in the middle section, or moved over so the bisect both lines equally - I don't want to lose the girl's legs pointing at the guy on sofa, because that was the idea of that pose in the picture. I have Jaderail's Golden Rule camera from sharecg installed in Studio, so I loaded it up for this quick render.

And of course the Forum 502 while typing this and lost the attachment... angry So I better stop before it dies again

  • @3Ddreamer, I see. I wouldn't have noticed the picture relation (her fingers pointing towards him) if you hadn't pointed (pun intended XD) it out! I think that's great thinking and very clever! At the end of the day, how you decide to frame the final render is up to individual preference. I still like your previous one more (zoomed out) because I love the empty space that it has. The space atop the male figure especially just draws me in more. But, nevertheless, both renders are gorgeous and communicate your message very clearly :).

  • New feedback added for @cismic. I'll add more feedback later tonight for the next user!

  • Added feedback for @DarwinsMishap's entry.

Will continue giving feedback to the next couple of users next week!

Hello everyone who might be following this thread!

Since this is such a time-consuming endeavor (more so than I originally predicted), I want to change the order in which I'm giving feedback to a "first come, first serve" basis. This will ensure that I'm only providing feedback on entries or to users who are interested and active in the forums.

I'm doing this since I've already posted several feedbacks and, having only heard back from a few users, it has made me reach the conclusion that not everyone who entered our category may want this (which is, of course, fine, but it would be useful for me to know so as to not waste anyone's time).

So if you are actively interested in feedback, please post here and I'll add you to the list and go through the remaining list of entries in that order. Thank you for your understanding!

Also, if anyone who's received feedback is interested in re-working their render and would like to share, you're welcome to post it here. ;)

I am interested in feedback.  Full disclosure, I will be driving across the country and living out of a suitcase for a while, so may not be able to rework my renders right away.

Thanks again for this thread.  I for one would completely understand if you reconsidered the detail you have been providing.  On the other hand, I find it very insightful so if you are willing to continue...

Thank you for your interest, @Diomede, I'll start with your feedback next week. Safe travels on your trip!

I don't mind giving feedback to those who are interested in it, since this storytelling is something I'm very passionate about. However, I really have no way of knowing if I'm, like we say in Mexico, "talking to the wall" (hablando con pared). The only real way I know the feedback is reaching the intended recipients (or frankly any person at all) is via comments, especially since the forums no longer display the number of views (which would at least provide hints of visitors to the thread).

I'm also interested in feedback if and when possible. Thanks.

  • Added feedback for @DarwinsMishap's entry.

Will continue giving feedback to the next couple of users next week!

Looking forward to your thoughts on this one. :) Thank you.

I'm definitely interested. I've found your feedback on the other images really informative thus far. :-)

I loved getting the feedback, and am very much grateful for it (still haven't had time to start working on the changes of the scene though.. time where has it gone *sigh*)

  • kimhkimh Posts: 388

i'm interested in feedback as well. I have been checking back...I just missed the request for adding people to the list. I like constructive criticism and learning new things

    Always interested in feedback :)

Not only to see what might be improved, but especially to see how someone else looks at something I made.

With an image that's supposed to tell a story it should be clear to the creator what's going on. It's interesting to see how much comes across and how much is lost in translation. Is the image merely an illustration to a story? Or does the image itself tell at least a part of it?

  • I am thankful for any feedback, and have found your insights in this thread very interesting.

I am often not online for days at a time though, so please do not mistake a slow response as disinterest. smiley

  • Yeah, sure. I'm not good at alot of things so constructive critisim is helpful. Since my username begins with Z, I figured I'd be last in line anyways.

  • @vwrangler, thank you for your interest (he sent me a PM), will add you to the list!

@Sbibb, thank you for your interest! Will add you to the list :).

I'm glad you found it useful, @Carola O. And yes, it's quite understandable when a hectic schedule gets in the way of creating art. Trust me, I know the feeling of wondering how time slipped between your fingers before you know it!

@Kimh, thank you for your interest, will add you to the list as well!

@mori_mann, thank you for the interest, will also add you to the list. And I understand what you mean completely. I always look forward to seeing responses because the explanation of your thought process when creating a scene often yields very interesting insights. So it's fun to see the different interpretations a render has.

@dtrscbrutal, thank you for your interest, will add you to the list. Just knowing that you are interested in the thread is enough. Like I mentioned before, the thread had been so silent apart from my own posts, that I had no way of telling if anyone was even reading.

@zombietaggerung, thank you for your interest, will add you to the list as well! I think this fist come, first serve is also a more fair way to go about this. Since otherwise a lot of you would have to wait a lot longer than you should.

    I'm interested in feedback :)

I keep having to pull the electrical plugs because of days and days of stormy weather (lighting) but I've booked marked this thread and play catch-up when I get online again.

Thank you so much for your time. Like I said in the other thread I am very interested in feedback.

Thank you for your interest, @Mollytabby. And don't worry, just knowing you are interested isenough incentive. I'll add you to the feedback list :).

  • I'm interested in feedback. Starting to lose interst though, as re-render after re-render after re-render get constant feedback while original entries are still waiting on first feedback. I appreciate the effort you are putting into this, but is is disheartening to open this and all that is new is feedback on a re-render instead of someone else's work.

Thank you for the interest, I've added you to the list. I understand your frustration and I apologize if it was disheartening. I'm still keeping the goal of providing feedback to two users per week. Feedback to reworked entries requires a lot less time than feedback on an entry, which is why I'm able to post throughout the week. I wait until Friday for the big feedback (new user and his/her entries) because I'm actually working on finding references for them throughout the week. Then once I have the references, I need to type everything down in an understandable and positive way (else my feedback comes across as destructive rather than constructive).

The only time I couldn't give feedback to two users was when I got Carola O her feedback. And the reason for only posting hers (with two entries) was that the next user (Cismic) had three entries. So that added up to five critiques which I just didn't have time to do that week. I also didn't want to leave Cismic hanging by only giving feedback to one of his entries that week, as I had trouble procuring references for his second and third entries.

I am thinking that, perhaps if next year we once again sponsor the storytelling category, we might limit the entries a user can have to 1 for our category. Thereby ensuring I can get to everyone much faster.

If it would help, at least for my two entries, perhaps pick either the one you liked best or the one you liked least and just work with that one? I don't have a hugely strong preference either way, and it might help ease the workload.

That's very considerate of you, thank you, @Vwrangler. I'll focus on the one I can provide the most feedback on/has more areas of opportunities for refinement. I might still give feedback on both, but will focus mostly on one of them and be more general with the other :).

  • As a new user (one year since first render and posting), I would welcome any feedback on my entries.  Thanks and much appreciate the time and effort you are taking to do this.

New feedback added for @cismic. I'll add more feedback later tonight for the next user!

I certainly appreciate the feedback. It will take me awhile. :-) As, I plan on working your pointers into the images. The contest was a fun.

    Thank you., Joseph
