Desert Queen Hair

in The Commons
Desert Queen Hair seems to be killing my system. I have a decent system, 6 processor, 2080Ti, 32 Gigs, I can render basic G8F in 12 seconds, but when I add this hair it does not start to render for 4 minutes, my disc is thrashing, the whole system feels like it is going into meltdown.
I do lots of large renders, I have almost no problems, this is ususal. Anyone else having issues?

By comparison, Matilda Hair, an excellent product, starts to render after 4 seconds and completes in 30 seconds.
Matilda is modelled hair, and I don't think it's fibremesh either; Desert Queen is dForce hair. As a result they have a vast difference in polygon count and those polygons have to be sent across to the GPU (assuming there's space). You could try reducing the hair density for the Desert Queen Hair (at the expense of coarsening it), at least for more distant shots, or reducing the number of segments per hair.
Thanks for the insights
I followed them up and found this, which explains the issue

Okay, I've followed AprilSYH's diagnostic and according to the scene info there are 29 million vertices. Which is a lot.
Thanks for helping.
Well, I have spent a few hours trying to make use of this product. If I edit the surface parameters, like PS Points and PS Hairs, the dForce simulation produces odd results. If I don't try to reduce the vertex count, it drains my system of memory and Daz gets flaky. It can look nice, but until I get some tips on how not to blow up my system it is going to have to sit out the game on the bleachers. I have quite a few strand-based hair products, this is the first to be quite so hungry.
@Valkeerie I wrote a thread on this yesterday.

I can also offer specific help should you need it. just send a site mail :)
Having the same problems. The hair simulated just fine, it starts the render process after 5 minutes but after 10 min nothing happens. The same scene with Sea Salt hair renders no problem
This is really peculiar.. I am looking into it now.
I believe I have a quick fix for this. Directions so you can play now, and see if this works for you. If it does, I'll contact Daz and send in an update:
Select the Hair in the scene tab ( the hair is parented to the cap so you will have to expand it to see it)
Select the surfaces highlighted in the first image attached. Change the PS Hairs Per Guide from 6 to 3.
Select the surfaces highlighted in the second image attached. Change the PS Hairs Per Guide to just 1.
This will reduce the vert count to half( 16 million). If this will still not render on your machines then maybe something else is going on.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Daz version 4.12.1.118
I made these changes and it rendered... but it was a struggle to make it work and this is with a 2080 Super. Otherwise it was just staying on 0% indefinitely.
@Muneman what vers of Daz Studio are you currently using?
4.12.1.118
Ok.. I am gonna ask about this. I am running a 2080 ti ( I was running a 980 ti prior ) and I have zero problems getting these to render even with high sub d figures and massive render settings. The only difference I can find is that I am running a slightly older version of studio. So now I wonder if thats what the issue is.
I made the changes and after about 11 min it started to render but something was wrong with the arms of the character skin. They were both black. So I disappeared the hair to see if that was the problem. With the eyeball closed on the hair, the shader was fine on the figure.
Turned on the hair and the cap and tried to render and Daz crashed also got a BSOD. Gonna try again
OK I reinstalled Daz version 4.11.0.383 and she rendered in 7 minutes
Thank you for the tips, I will try them out soon. They are more or less the things I was trying - a fine balance between the hair looking thin and my system running out of memory. On the plus side, I've learned a bit about DAZ hair :-)
YAY! Glad we got that sorted. I am going to take this up with tech since it seems like its the newer version giving people a harder time.
You are very welcome :) Glad I could help!
i will confirm (4.11 and 4.12) that newer versions of daz require more memory use and with the hair crashes more when trying to render. I prefer to use 4.11 for this reason. And i love Chevybabe's hair <3
So from a couple of PAs point of view the newer versions of DS are unstable and no use when using their products - interesting guess there's no point in me buying anything else from you vendors using older versions of DS. Any way to find out which PAs aren't creating on the new versions or is it just a bit hit and miss?
I'm not sure what you mean. I use both old and new when I'm testing my products. Newer versions have newer shiny things, but require more memory. It's just the nature of it. I know Chevybabe works in newer version of DS, if i remember right. I personally use older DS because my computer is about 10 years old. As a tech person told me, a potato would render faster than my computer. ;) And i STILL use Chevybabe's hair.
That's quite a logical leap there.
I'm really sorry you feel this way Scorpio. I have always taken pride in the products I make and I have always offered one on one customer support, either via forum threads or through site mail. My products work in the newest versions of studio but it SEEMS like they chew up a lot more memory in the newest one. That is beyond my control. Older computers and laptops may struggle with dhair. It's the nature of the beast. I wish it wasn't so because I love it so much and well, I want everyone to be able to use it.
I will send in a fix ( a second wearable preset) into Daz that has the surfaces set up with fewer hairs for those that are struggling to get this to work. I know that Daz is swamped so I have no idea how long it will take to get through, but I will do my part.
@chevybabe25, Thank you for the instructions. I was just able to try them out myself. I have a 1080ti and 64GB Ram, but my desktop can be 'cranky' with everything. I opened the 4.12 Public Build and loaded Meadow and I was testing the Papyrus outfit and the followed your instructions for Desert Queen Hair. Other than strands flying off like she has static electricity, it worked like a charm. (It helped also that this time, I had found the face shield and used it too!) I am glad that this worked nicely and am going to see if it will help Anubis, who is locking up my computer.
Lovely work as always,
Mary
Excellent!! I think it looks lovely Mary! If you want to eliminate more of the flyaways, you can increase your pose transition time from 1 to 2 in the simulation settings. It will take longer for it to simulate, but will give the hair ample time to settle :)
Thanks! I had the pose at 30, ad it ran to 60, so I need to figure out how to extend the number. Something to work on tomorrow after work.
Pose Transition time is not part of the timeline. It is a setting here: Simulations Settings>Simulation>Pose transition Time . The default is 1
Thanks @fastbike1. Trying to answer something from an iPad and a vague and sleepy memory of simulation settings.
I definitely get that. I am occasionally/often personally subject to both those conditions and am consantly opening Studio to check something I've read or considered while thanking about a new scene.
