Well, had a chance to go and try 'pose transition time' set at 2.0 with the Desert Queen Hair on Ahmunet for Khemsit 8 and wearing the dForce Roxie Dress for G8F. The set was Jannah Iray Addon, I had noticed it had a Greco/Roman/Egyptian thing going on and have been trying to find a pose to use it with.

Well when I ran the simulation, I had my back turned away and was working on something else. I noticed it was done, and got an eyeful. A big solid mass of hair where the head was supposed to be. I had used the face shield. But I tried a small render, that took almost two hours. I had planned on adding jewerly after simulation but totally forgot.

So here is my result. I had done all the suggested adjustments in this thread. So if there are any other recommendations, I am open to them. My flatmate said it was a happy accident and he liked it.

Ahh. She is sitting :)  My best advice, is to pose G8 then raise her back (y trans)  to almost default position so that when the hair simulates it "pulls" less into the pose. You can also increase the pose transition time, but every time you do, you are increasing the overall time to simulate.  I do like how it is though, it looks pretty neat!

Thanks, I will try first the extra time tomorrow. Then if that does not work noticeably, I will work on the posing. I had wanted to add makeup and jewerly after the difficult parts were done. I have to be careful with my laptop, while it is a 1080, with 32Gb, its 2nd cooling pad died a few weeks ago and I have not located a new one to buy. (Apparently they are hard to come by now.) So I have to limit rendering/simulation time to short bursts.

I appreciate your time chevybabe25, and I am learning so much from this project.

  • You are very welcome Mary :)

I find that sitting and floor poses need a lot of time to settle into position.  Normally when I do simulations, I usually use a pose transition time of at least 2. Floor poses I go as high as 6.

I have the scene reloaded and went for a pose transition time of 3. But I also double-checked the other settings and found they had reset to default. So fixed those, and I also extended the timeline along the bottom to 60, just to give things more time to settle. And when I moved the character back to zero, she was inside the bench. So adjust, clear simulation settings and it is running now. While I am getting ready for the day, breakfast and whatever, it will be running. Successfully I hope.

I had to stop it after 20 minutes when I realized that her fingers were sitting into the bench. At double the size it was easier to see. The render is now done and their is a difference to the outfit and to the hair. Her face is still somewhat obscured.

  • I would try the y trans trick.  Try to picture where G8's head would be when shes standing, then adjust the figure up (using just the y trans in the parameters.)  Then once the simm is done, you can nudge her back into place.  The simulation wouldn't require going higher than 2 for pose transition at most that way.

I'm attaching a quick and dirty example. The original pose had G8 sitting directly on the floor at 0 Y trans. Because her hair isnt interacting with other items in the scene, like a wall or floor,  there is less of a need to fight the hair into place.  If the figure in your scene isn't at 0 y trans, just write down the number it is at, so you can place her back perfectly once the sim is done.

I hadn't seen this before I tried the hair adjustment. I froze the dress simulation, then with character at the sitting pose, and using PowerPose, I selected the neck (and had to close the eye on the hair to see what I was doing) and bent her upper neck 2 clicks on the 'bend' and it seems to have worked. I am rendering the result now. It may take a bit, I am 39 minutes in, and only 2% converged.

Thank you for the visual though. I am a visual learner and the attachment makes sense to me.

  • You are very welcome :)   I think the next video I do for youtube will demonstrate this.  It really is hard to explain without a visual.

It finished as I was in the kitchen putting a loaf of bread into the oven. I used Ahmunet's makeup and fingerpaint to 'gussy' her up a bit.

This has been a great learning experience. I can't say how much I appreciate your time helping me with the Desert Queen Hair. And I will see if I can use what I learned with other hairs now.

    OMG FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nice! I've been doing the trick you mentioned earlier in this thread and it's been working great, but that's fantastic that there is a lower resolution preset!

Hmm, I downloaded the update this morning, and maybe I missed it totally. I used my notes and adjusted the settings manually. Where should I see the update settings?

    Hi Mary :)

The new settings are next to the original hair icon now. It's a black and white thumbnail. This will load a full hair preset with the settings I listed above.

Ok, I don't mean to diss the creator of this hair but it's pretty much useless to me. It took over 12 hours to run the simulation with a not particularly impressive result. It didn't look much different than all the non dForce hair items I regularly use. And I'm not using some old, out of date computer. It's a brand new i9 ten core iMac. I pretty much maxed out on every performance enhancement available when I ordered it and it still took over 12 hours to do the simulation. That's absurd.

Dforced dhair is resource heavy.   This hair, dark match hair, and the sea salt one are really on the heavy side of things.

You can try changing out all the surface settings and trade the pshairs for pr hairs. Example: surface 1 has 3 ps hairs and 3 pr hairs.  You can turn ps hairs to 0, and make the pr hairs 6.

PS hairs are more accurate for simulations.

PR hairs are generated after the simulation.

So this should cut down on simulation time drastically.

I get that dForce hair is resource heavy but the other dForce hair items I have take, at most, half an hour to complete with the default hair loaded. With a few tweaks, I can get it down to 15 or 20 minutes. On the plus side, this hair loads in a state which is usable without the simulation unlike many of the other dForce hair items I have. That, I appreciate greatly as well the parameter dials which allow me to change the shape without having to do a simulation.
