Carrara Challenge #56: Let There Be Light

The third verse of the Book of Genesis states:  “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”

Religion aside, in many ways, the expression  “Let There Be Light” is a metaphor for sharing ideas  and enlightening each other – which is what these challenges are aimed at.

Carrara has many ways of making light effects.

They vary from a pure light that creates shadows, through cone effects, various star-like effects, atmospheric effects, lights within clouds, all the way to the Sun’s Crepuscular rays bursting through the sky.

Your mission, should you accept it, is to make a dramatic and powerful scene using any or all of Carrara’s amazing lighting effects.

Remember, for there to be light there must also be darkness. PS postwork is acceptable.

Rules

  1. Preferably render should be done in Carrara’s engine – of course you can use one of Carrara’s plugin engines if you like – but please keep in mind this challenge is aimed at showcasing Carrara’s native abilities.
  2. Artists can enter up to 4 works.
  3. Daz once again is being kind enough to sponsor us – thank you Daz J For the prizes an artist can only win one prize.

Prizes:  the $195 Daz total prize into four parts ($50, $50, $50, $45) based on total participation, best render, and the two runners up in these categories.

Here's one or two I found: Example of cone lighting

    example of effects on bulbs

example of using clouds to get a hazy lighting effect

example of primovol smoke and big dramatic shadows

    Humpbacks

Used a Spot light with a caustic gel for this one. Created the caustic gel using Filter Forge.

    Wish Upon A Star

Used Glow channel in the shaders (Sun & Bridge instruments) and a shape light for this one.

Was done as a two part render, first render of the sun which was needed for the Bridge Viewscreen shader, then a render of the Bridge setting.

Sun WIP, used Background Nebula image for effect.

    Sun render

Scene WIP. Sun on the LHS, Bridge on the RHS

Glow WIP, Texture map copied to the Glow Channel for both the Sun and Bridge instruments

    Final render

Nice render and use of lights there, Freelight. yes  Glad to see you here.

For me, the only outlier was the cat.  Nothing against cats, but the texture of it lacked the same subtle shading as the rest of the render.  Have you ever tried putting fur on a cat by using the Carrara hair room?  Holly Wetcircuit has a great tutorial for exactly that.

Any reason for the unusual configuration of the lights in the fake GI?  Then again, maybe it wasn't unusual, as I have never used one.  It seemed very effective.

Thanks, it does make an effective result but no reason for the fake gi layout, as long as they point in all directions. All set to a value of 1 with a dark grey colour then individual models have either spots or distants illuminating them only, some having 1, 2 or 3 lights. Using indirect lighting can fair chug up your render times so it makes for a speedy alternative. I think fur would slow down render times, same as hair which is why Aiko 3 in this render has none.

maybe you can help me, with your vast library of links you keep.. Do you remember a post made a long while ago bout Studio Lights with the file attached to the post?

around the time or just before  Philemo made his light setup.. I can't find it and I can't remember who posted it.. just want to credit them for my challenge entry if I can.. yes

I think the post would of been around Jan2019 ~ that's the date of the car file I downloaded wink
