Attached is my contribution. I have to say, that easy chair set up is sweet. But I don't think I could do that...  I'd spend most of my work day napping.

Yay!  After staring at my wonderful new build* sitting on the floor like an unloved urchinsad I re-examined my possibilites and came up with a solution that will probably work.  Although I will need to get a better display situation for it.  But for now I've moved it from the floor to an honored and visible place at the end of the left branch of my "U" shaped workarea, surrounded by objet d'art (nick-nacks).  The current monitor I have for it is a 15 year old 1440x900 19 inch display.  But I have room in that cubbyhole for a  24" 1920x1080 display.  And if I get a decent KVM switch, it would have enough combined cabling to reach my main monitor also.  In which case I could send the output to my main monitor at the front of my "U" workarea where the desk is more comfortable to work at.  But the important thing is that all that RGB inside the window in the case be demonstrating its "IF" (Impress Factor) to the rare visitor who graces my establishment.devil

Yes there were other possibilities, but they all involved either $$$ or lots and lots of cable & device, games of musical chairs that I really didn't want to get into.frown

    * Note:  this build is NOT my DAZing machine.  My DAZing machine has no window or DVD tray to deal with so it's out of sight in a cubbyhole near the floor on the other branch of the "U".  This colorful build with the window is in training to become my new primary everyday use machine while the 12 year old primary machine (at the head of the "U") gradually retires.

Jason, that's an impressive setup! I can't sleep in the living room. I need to use my BiPap machine to keep me breathing.

LeatherGryphon, thanks for sharing your recent addition to the setup! I loved reading about your excitement!laugh

  • Thanks. There is a small amount of logic to the setup that helps make it make sense...  and seem a little less impressive.

One bit of advice I have is...  invest in short "HDMI extension cables." I have about five of these, all around six inches long. I plug it into the back of the monitor so that swapping connections only produces wear and tear on the cable, rather than the monitor port.

I use the extentions to swap out inputs regularly. So I can switch between my work computer, the television, the fun computer, and the DS computer easily. I also use the PIP function to dual things. Like work and TV at the same time.

Jason Galterio, I don't like to swap anything in and out. That always leads to disasters for me. Fortunately, I know my tendencies and can avoid them. I use longer cables since the desk moves around while the computer remains stationary on the shelving unit.

    you missed the point

they use a wee little cable to plug their long ones into as to not damage the socket on the monitor or PC

Exactly. I was lucky enough to get one 32 inch UHD monitor as a company perk. I bought the second one with a bonus I received.

I was paranoid about plugging things in and out of the monitor, so i picked up a couple of really short HDMI extensions. That way the only thing getting repeated treatment is the $3 cable and not the $500 monitor.

It's worked so well that I've attached them even when I don't plan to unplug and plug things regularly.

These ones were a little longer, 1.5 feet, and about $7 each.

OK, I understand. However, I don't swap out cables. They go where I want and stay there. In the end, whatever works for you is what counts!laugh

Sorta OT since it's not actually my workspace... For several months (I guess since April?... do we still have April?... time has gotten weird since 2020), my wife has been working from home because of the zombie pandemic, and we set up a folding desk for her to use, which I friggin hated because it was rickety and she had just gotten a brand new super cool office at her job when they moved... I'd been meaning to make her a desk, but she didn't want me to do that because I was busy with other stuff... but two weeks ago I said "screw that" and started making her a desk between other stuff I was doing.

It wasn't really hard, just annoying because I had to work over/around it... the style is that crappy (I don't know the actual name) farmhouse antique... the stuff that looks like it was stolen out of a barn... Megh... she likes that... the stuff with the really dark wood and cast iron hardware...

I just finished putting it in for her... she and my daughters went out and I just brought it in and assembled it...

it looks a wreck because I put everything thing back more or less, exactly where she had it... but considering the original set up was totally different, a lot of it is just dumped wherever it fit...

She hasn't gotten home yet, so y'all are the first to see it assembled...

Also I may be a little drunk now because I made a very vodkaie drink to ease the pain of my foot that was assaulted by a falling slab of bulletproof glass...

So if this makes no sense, I blame it on Russian vodka and polycarbonate.

Also ignore anything she may have written on that whiteboard... I don't think it's sensitive information but ignore it because I can't operate any image editing software to blur that out at the moment...

@Ron Knights  ...Thanks! I did... Sorta... but that stuff wears off too quickly.

@Anyone who is bored enough to read this...

Most people here are pretty handy and creative, so this is probably useless info, but since this morning I was installing new Backup batteries/UPSs and some power strips too and these things usually don't come with any sort of templates for the keyhole slots in the back, which make hanging them on a wall or under a desk a pain, I thought I'd pass on some stupid thing I do for making templates for mounting stuff in general...

A lot of stuff these days is packed inside indestructible clear plastic shells... especially if you shop at Super-Mega-Big Box Club Stores, like Sam's Club, BJs* or Costco...

Most of us just curse while we are unboxing stuff as we mangle open the plastic shipping coffin, probably cutting ourselves on the sharp ragged plastic as we do so, and then throw out or toss it into the recycling.

But that clear plastic can be useful... I save it for all sorts of projects, but mostly for making templates... it's ridgid, but flexible and clear, so it's great for this purpose.

Lots of stuff has this sort of plastic, and it can be harvested from all sorts of things from boxes with a clear window, to berry shipping containers... the bigger the better, but generally I don't save stuff bigger than 8.5" x 11"... but I do have few huge sheets in my work shop for big templates.

I think the image below is self explanatory...

Then flip the plastic over because that the orientation you'll need to make the mark on the wall, shelf or hornet's nest...

It's also helpful to write on the template, any useful information like which side faces out, directions like where the end, top or cord is, and lastly what it is for in case it's something you might buy more of in the future...

Oh yeah... most importantly trace the keyholes... duh... there would no point to the thing if you didn't.

Also one other thing... keep in mind the direction of the key slot and its length, because if there is limited room, you might not be able to slide it forward if something obstructs it.

Yeah... that's all, nothing fantastical or super "life hacking" (god, I hate that word... "life hack"... stuffing toothpaste into a hole in the wall is not hacking life... it being too lazy to buy friggin' spackle from the dollar or pound store... geez).

Anyhooz, just thought I'd mention it...

    Cheers.

Please note the following footnote is rated R for salacious innuendo and bad humor.

    * I don't know how wide spread the chain of club stores called BJs is, but if you aren't familiar with it, the name is very misleading, it's not that sort of a club... it's an abbreviation for the founders initials or something... I've known a couple of people who were disappointed after they got a membership and just found out it was food and stuff... lots of unnecessary winking and nudging for nothing.

I usually just screw a single screw for the end one partly into a side of a bit of furniture and hang it from that if I hang it at all.

You can also use foam tape... I like foam tape because after a year or two the adhesive melts and the moment you go to unplug something the whole thing falls off and drops into that region of space where nobody's arms can reach... it's like an Indian Jones movie with the thing just a nanometer out of reach and if your fingers touch it, it slips a little more... and a little more... and then if do ever fish the damn thing out, the back of the power strip will always have a permanent nasty sticky spot with dust, lint, spider parts, cat hairs (even if you don't have a cat... somehow cat hairs will find their way there) and all manner crevice funk on it.

I recently removed two old power strips in my workshop which I drilled two holes in and screwed a 1/4" (6mm) lag bolt through... they had the worst mounting holes ever and I was too lazy to be bothered... in my defense they were rubbish and very hollow on the ends, and I knew there was nothing to hit there and I was mad and lazy... (angry "mad"... the other mad is just a given)

Wow! Here they are real living interiors in which people live! Here are the interiors I want to see in the Daz3D store. And not these sterile palaces, penthouses with an area of 300m2.

dantist22121991, the small parts of my living area that you saw are messy enough. The larger picture is much messier! Yes, I hear you and agree!laugh

Oh, and forgive me if I mispelled your name!

Hah! You call those wimpy little things power strips?
    This is a power strip!
64 outlets, three wall-type switches for different groups, 8 outlets connected to a UPS.
(Plus a fourth switch for my under-desk space heater.)
All on their own 15 amp circuit breaker in the box.
Because there's no such thing as overkill.
