Here's a quick experiment I did with comic render after reading this thread. I have to say, I LOVE FotoSketcher already. The outline pass was done in FotoSketcher with one of the Pen and Ink styles, and used as the bottom layer (in Gimp) with 100% opacity, under a Vivify and Cartoon render blended in at around 30-50% each.

And here the result of postwork using Vitual Painter 5 and Gimp
    Oops,
forgot to say: this is Genesis 2 Male

The results you have are excellent. It's a very good, distinctive, look.

    Thank you
But still there are things I'm not getting the final result ...
    Still around the experiment ...
Although, I did not even use any selection tool, no brush use, and not rubber.
the result is only using filters, but there is a set amount of filters to the result, each render, and different lighting requires slide the parameters of filters for different values used in another render, and so on ... However, it is only a few minutes, going from one filter to another, very fast thing !!
here, M4 rendered in PP2014 and the quick result of postwork

Nice! It looks, honestly, a lot like "A Scanner Darkly". Well done.

    Wow! Thank you!
Glad to hear it, since after rendering the scene, postwork takes less than 10 minutes to get those results!
I have not tested it yet on scenarios, vehicles, animals etc, but I'm walking this

Great work! Interesting cartoon effect. I wonder how they would look if you add soft black lines on them... or even only outlines.

Interesting. Do you know that you also can create black-white comic renders with Poser Pro 2014? You can combine these black lined renders with your images.

Just did a bit playing around with your grey images.... But I think color is better.

There ought to be a product to do that with DAZ|Studio. But would surface shaders or a specialized camera be preferred?

This was beautiful too, man !!
some years ago the stores here in Brazil sold a product called reticules, which looked like an adhesive, and then clung these reticles on the art done by hand, sometimes it was dangerous, because he had to use a stylus to cut it on the design.
today, do not know where they sell it here, it seems that disappeared from the shops, in fact, not even the ink nanquin professional, it is very rare to find these days.

This product was extensively used in Comics and Role Playing Game art up until the late 1980's under the name brand of Zip-A-Tone...
