Depends on the season. All day long when it's cold out, a couple big iced glasses in the summer.
Both, but I only stick my pinky out for the bougie stuff.
It really varies depending on mood, but I probably drink Earl Grey the most. There's a place nearby that sells the fancy stuff by the ounce, and when I'm drinking the factory made it's usually Stash's double bergamot variety. But I also really love oolong (a semi-oxidized tea), EXCEPT FOR MILK OOLONG ew, and have a ton of herbal and fruity blends also (there's nothing wrong with Celestial Seasonings, basic does not mean bad).
On top of my usual assortments I've got three handmixed Earl Grey varieties right now (regular, cream, and Russian), Moulin Rouge chai (chai with French vanilla and a smokiness about it), one that's strawberry and lemon, and one called Almond Rocker that's marzipan-y.
Tea, Earl Grey, Hot.
I'm a big hot tea person most of the time, but in the summer nothing beats a glass of ice cold sweet tea, or iced tea made from fresh lemon balm. Room temperature tea is nasty, just like room temperature water.
Depends on what it is! Whether it's a bag or loose, leaves or rolled, white/black/green/herbal/other. Lots of herbal teas, especially spicy ones, I'll just leave the bag in the whole time. I only get fussy about water temperature for the good stuff, or things where it really matters. Tea bags go in and have hot water poured over, and for loose I'll either use compostable DIY teabags or break out one of my obscene number of infusers, ranging from teapots to mesh tea balls to novelty ones including a flamingo pool float:
Sometimes cream, sometimes sugar, sometimes nothing. It really depends.
Do not develop a taste for raw pu-erh. A Daz habit would be cheaper.
If you decide that you like tea, keep a tasting journal! It's fun and sometimes you'll be surprised to learn what you consistently enjoy.
Store any loose teas in airtight steel tins with as little head room as possible.
Usually nothing, mostly I'm just enjoying the tea. But somtimes a complementary cookie doesn't go amiss. It's like finishing a meal with Vin Santo and biscotti.
I love pu-erh, but rarely drink it because the good stuff is insanely expensive. My mom thinks it's disgusting but she also likes lapsang souchong, which I have to conclude means her tastebuds and sense of smell stopped working years ago.
But really, in the end it's all just leaves and twigs and other bits of crap processed in varying (and sometimes horrible lookingatyoulapsangsouchong) ways. Like coffee, it's plant water.
I love the flamingo infuser! Definitely a great way to plant up your hot water.
I know better than to include pre-paid postage!
Boca is only 3 hours from me. And how do you know I'm not a shady organization?
I'll bear that in mind!
Are your wife and kids still unplugging the microwave on you? Man, people get all up in arms when you burn microwave popcorn, don't they? And that was, like over 10 years ago; must have really been pungent...
Yes, all of that stuff is steeping, but most people consider the spiders optional. Optional for YOUR tea. For themselves, they'd just as soon not have spiders. I know, weird, huh?
I think it's only ever been meant as a "saying". You know, one of those things you say (with your lips) but don't actually do (with your hands).
Let me guess, you have to make all your own food now and you sleep with one eye open too, right?
You never said if there was a minimum size for the spider. But I say if you're trying to use multiple spiders per cup or you're reusing spiders, then you may be over-harvesting the spiders in your area. That's kind of like overfishing in popular waters, or overhunting in popular hunting grounds. Maybe try some different locations for spider-harvesting for a few weeks?
No, really; it makes complete sense. After all, you have to make your own food and sleep with one eye open. Drinking with a mallet in your hand is probably the next logical progression!
It's really served at 26,004 degrees.
There's a gem of information in every post you write, good sir!
Very well. It probably would have been embarrassing for your wife anyhow, because neither you nor I have any sense of shame, hehe!
So inquiring minds want to know, did it happen?
It's always one of those, I think I can say that!
The reason very hot drinks might lead to cancer is because if it's hot enough it can damage the esophagus, which makes sense, any liquid hot enough also causes burns to every other part of the body. If you're drinking it hot enough to cause damage, it's definitely too hot to drink. The link below is an update to your link.

If you had one recommendation for a "tea newbie" (ranging from tea selection to water temperature, steep time, etc), what would you suggest?
I just pour in the boiling wate I am not sophisticated
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your tea predilection?
I drink too much too late Mr Bladder takes no prisoners
Did I forget to ask a critical tea-loving question? If so, please make up your own question and answer it!
What do you eat with the tea?
Dark choc digestives, choc Hobknobs, fig rolls, digestives, cheese sandwich
Thanks for asking. Usually the only time I'm asked is when someone sees me making it and asks, "What the hell are you doing?!"
How often do you drink it?
-Once every morning at least.
Type?
-Loose-leaf black, (Tiny little rolled-up balls).
Brand? Flavor?
-Any brand. Larger boxes are greater deals. Black.
Temperature for drinking?
-Hot. It's a whole, different, terrible flavor when cold.
Method of prep?
-Boil large batch in a pan for a few minutes.
Other ingredients?
-Yes:
-Cinnamon, black pepper, ground ginger, cloves, cardamom.
-Anis extract, orange extract.
-And before pouring, I add to the cup:
-Milk, molasses
Suggestion for tea newbie:
-Don't listen to advice. Experiment with anything that looks interesting.
-Eventually you'll find a mix of ingredients and techniques that work for you.
-I especially reject the advice to 'never over-boil' tea. I boil every atom of flavor & caffeine that those leaves can possible release for me.
Eat with?
-Nothing. My tea is filling enough by itself.
Something else to share?
-I love my "Mud Tea."
It's so much fun! The cuteness makes up for the inefficient brewing caused by the compartment shape, plus it also comes in swan and unicorn versions. There are also various ones you can get with leaves/plants/flowers that make it very clear that this is a cup of plant water, lol.
I'm also that person who owns a tea cozy. I like coffee just fine and drink it a lot, but honestly tea is just way more fun. We get all the cute accessories.
How often do you drink tea?
I go through stages with tea - there are times where I'll drink it every day, others when I won't drink it for a few months. I have to be in the "mood" for tea. Or eating something that I particularly like to match with tea.
Do you drink factory tea or small-batch/boutique tea?
Usually "factory" tea, but I do buy one "boutique" tea also.
What's your favorite brand and flavor, and if different, what is the brand and flavor you drink most often?
For a "normal" tea, I only drink Nerada Tea. It's a local-ish tea that both my husband and I prefer (it was more local a couple of years back when we lived on the Atherton Tablelands....now we are about 4 or so hours away from it, but it's still considered "local" LOL) However it's a hard tea to find at cafes etc - they all seem to stock just Lipton (ugh) or Twinings (another ugh). So neither of us drink tea outside the home because of that. It's always confused us considering Nerada is a "local Far North Queensland" tea, yet Far North Qld cafes/coffee shops etc don't offer it.
The one boutique tea that I absolutely love is Roogenic's Native Anti-Inflammitea in the tea bags. It's a Lemon Myrtle tea and is totally divine. I've always hated "herbal" teas - never found one that I thought tasted nice, they were all ghastly. Until this one. The lemon myrtle flavour is beautiful! It's based on australian indigenous knowledge using native australian lemon myrtle and native australian lemongrass that is supposed to help with inflammation and I was hoping it would help with my knee - I haven't noticed any difference tho LOL, but I kept drinking it cos it's bloody beautiful! (and also cos it's an australian owned company using wild growing and locally farmed ingrediants, and they work with the indigenous peoples a lot)
Do you like your tea hot, at room temperature, or cold/iced?
Hot - hot enough to drink without killing me LOL. Loathe iced tea.
How long do you steep your tea, and what method do you usually use?
Depends on what I'm drinking. Factory tea bag - under a minute. Pour the boiled water over it, let it sit for a minute then it's ready. For my Lemon Myrtle tea, I leave the bag in while I'm drinking it so it continues to steep.
Do you add anything to your tea, like sugar, cream, rose petals, or "other"?
Nerada tea bag - milk and 1 sugar. Lemon Myrtle tea - I only add about a teaspoon of honey. I drink that one black.
If you had one recommendation for a "tea newbie" (ranging from tea selection to water temperature, steep time, etc), what would you suggest?
Teh only recommendation I have is to find something you like and experiment. Everyone's tastes are different - you have to find your own.
What do you eat with your tea?
Ahhhhh excellent question. I am FUSSY about my tea. Seriously. When it comes to anything chocolate, I drink coffee only. But with tea - I only drink my Nerada tea with scones, other desserts that are non-chocolate flavoured, and toast with marmalade. Toast with vegemite or peanut butter is coffee only. Marmalade is tea only. LOL. I don't eat anything with the Lemon Myrtle tea.
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your tea predilection?
I only drink tea in a tea cup. Never ever ever do I drink it in a coffee mug or anything that is not a special tea cup. With a saucer. I collect teacups and teapots - I don't care about brand or age, it's just "pretty" I go for. LOL. And I use them all. But tea is only ever drunk in a tea cup with saucer - that's a LAW. LOL. I am really really fussy about my tea - as I mentioned. Almost to the point of being pedantic LOL. If I'm visiting someone at their house and they offer me a cuppa, I check what coffee they use - if it's instant coffee, I ask for tea (and pray they don't use Lipton). If they only have those horrid standard coffee mugs, I'll deal with the instant coffee (but I put my milk in first then) and don't go for the tea. If they have small "rounded" cups, I'll go with the tea. And with tea, the milk goes in last and I add just enough to make it a "soft" brown colour - so it's still kinda "sharp" tasting, but not quite. So yeah, maybe don't invite me to your place for a cuppa, cos I'll probably drive you mad with what I like. LOL.
omg yes! I have tea cozies for my teapots, I have a peacock infuser, I have tea strainers (that you sit on top of your cup when you are pouring loose leaf tea). And do you remember those little crocheted or lace "doilies" that were put over the milk jug to stop flies etc (although I guess it would depend on if you lived where there were a lot of flies...like the aussie bush LOL). I even have a few of those. And yes, I use them when I am doing a "tea party" - the teapot, the cups and saucers, the milk jug, the sugar jug, the tea cosies and the little doilies. Heh. I love tea accessories.
Me too, the flamingo infuser is "very Miami", lol!
Hey, the world turns on principles and standards!
Well, I'm one who has learned that during this thread, for sure! I've also learned that nobody really looks down on "factory tea". You know, if you can find it in Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Costco, or Sam's Club, it's probably not boutique, small batch, or what have you.
But people don't care about that and I think most people here drink one type or another of "factory tea" as their daily tea, which dispells some of my preconceptions!
Bonus points for a Captain Picard reference!
Okay, now I want one of those. Sure don't need one, but that's got some STYLE going on right there!
Noted and logged!
Interesting!
I think teas are a lot more sensitive to flavor loss than coffees, but probably only if they're not individually wrapped.
It would be good for all of us to remember this. Thanks!
I am super curious. How does one pronounce that? I'm admitting a bit of ignorance here, thanks!
Oh wow, is this a thing; labels coming off?
All of my mugs have handles on them, so I'm good there!
Somehow, I totally get this!
Buying is usually better, for many reasons!
Nonsense! You don't approach addiction status until you get to 11 times a day.
Here's a test:
Does your habit ruin your personal or family relationships, or make you absent for important family functions, such as tooth fairy visits or high school graduations? Note that I said nothing about being tardy on occasion or having a cup in your hand at family functions or ordering tea when out to lunch with friends.
Has your habit resulted in a poor driving record or loss of your driver's license?
Is your habit resulting in poor work at your job, or has it caused you to lose employment?
No to any of these? Hey, you're good to go; I'd celebrate with another cup!
Point for creativity!
See, that's just being pro-tea. I like it!
You are not a savage, that's obvious!
No he doesn't!
I'm from the south so everyday, cold and full of sugar
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How often do you drink tea?
Almost every day
Do you drink factory tea or small-batch/boutique tea?
Factory, I don't have time for snobism.
What's your favorite brand and flavor, and if different, what is the brand and flavor you drink most often?
Favorite brand: Twinings, I like many of their teas.
I most often drink Classic Earl Grey, not becuae that it my favorite but that is the most available. It is a miracle when I can get my hands on their other teas locally, like Lady Gray, Irish Breakfast, or Gunpowder Green.
Do you like your tea hot, at room temperature, or cold/iced?
Warm or room temperature, I don't like hot or iced tea.
How long do you steep your tea, and what method do you usually use?
The time depends on the tea, I always use leaf tea, bags are wasteful and taste funny.
Do you add anything to your tea, like sugar, cream, rose petals, or "other"?
a tiny amount of sweetener, which is definitely not sugar, and lemon juice.
If you had one recommendation for a "tea newbie" (ranging from tea selection to water temperature, steep time, etc), what would you suggest?
If your black tea is actually black you are doing it wrong!
What do you eat with your tea?
I drink tea for breakfast primarily, so whatever I eat for breakfast. Ham and eggs, or toast, whatever.
Did I forget to ask a critical tea-loving question? If so, please make up your own question and answer.
How much tea you drink in a day?
~800 ml
Earl Grey. Milk (soya - unsweetend), no sugar.
Twinnings, Sainsbury's Fair Trade or Tesco Finest. Didn't like Waitrose of M&S. Probably prefer Sainsbury's Fair Trade the most.
I also find that switching between the brands makes them all taste better for some reason.
Factory tea. "Earl Gray", hot & naked (um..., the tea, not me, although that works too) Also "Oolong" tea, "English Breakfast" tea, cheap green tea, cheap black tea. And the sometimes difficult to find, and abomination, of all teas, generic decaffeinated tea for when I want some tea but am already bouncing off the walls and am sick of the equally meh decaf coffee.
Flavored teas are OK now and then but the novelty soon wears off. Never milk or sugar. Steeped for 3 minutes, sometimes I usually save the teabag for a second cup and steep longer. However, the Oolong tea I steep for only 2 minutes but do save the bag for a second cup steeped for 4 minutes.
Water is heated by microwave for 2 minutes (pre-boil) before teabag goes for a swim.
Despite the Jean-Luc Picard association with "Earl Gray" tea, it's really kinda nice. It's the hint of citrus without being overpowering.
When I'm drinking tea, I usually am not eating too.
I'm really enjoying this thread! So interesting! Now we need someone to do a thread asking about what everyone does for a typical breakfast! LOL. I'd be intersted to see that one - with people from all over, the answers could be really interesting!
How often do you drink tea?
Several times a month - used to be more frequent before I retired.
Do you drink factory tea or small-batch/boutique tea?
Factory
What's your favorite brand and flavor, and if different, what is the brand and flavor you drink most often?
Twinings and Bigelow. Flavor depends on mood - English Breakfast, Darjeeling, Gunpowder Green, Russian Caravan (all Twinings bulk) Constant Comment, or Black Currant (Bigelow bags)
Do you like your tea hot, at room temperature, or cold/iced?
Hot
How long do you steep your tea, and what method do you usually use?
3 - 4 minutes for the 10 oz. mug, 4 - 6 minutes for the 16 oz. mug
Do you add anything to your tea, like sugar, cream, rose petals, or "other"?
Sugar
If you had one recommendation for a "tea newbie" (ranging from tea selection to water temperature, steep time, etc), what would you suggest?
Experiment to find what you truly like
What do you eat with your tea?
Nothing - tea for me is an afternoon or evening relaxation
