There will supposedly be launches of new Nvidia cards at the end of this month. These are LHR (anti-mining) versions of the 3080, 3070 and 3060 Ti, and maybe a 3080 Ti.
I just read about it here and here.
Could someone who has experience with this stuff explain how that could happen when they can't even supply their current cards?
I'll delay ruining my health with beer and pizza and wait instead for those cards, if there is hope in this story.
Which begs the question: What are the odds that I'll be able to compete with all you experienced buyers when the cards do come out? I'm slow even getting up in the mornings.
It looks like all of the LHR cards are the replacement for the regular versions. So no more full hash rate chips being produced... That being said, miners came up with a workaround pretty quickly on the RTX 3060. As long as it is hooked up to a monitor/TV the limiter is turned off. Big suprise, you can now buy a HDMI dummy handshake plug. And then there was the set of drivers Nvidia accidently(?) released that have no hash limiter on the RTX 3060....
Nvidia will be just going through the motions, i doubt they care who buys the cards as long as somebody does.
Of course there are also the AMD Threadripper CPUs, although at £4999.99 for the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 64 Core / 128 Threads 3995WX CPU you might be better off waiting for GPU sanity to return.
The only noticeable difference it will make is that gamers will blame Nvidia for the shortages instead of the miners. Technically, they'll have less components so they'll be a little lighter on resources to produce on the supply side.
Honestly, I understand the move but I'm sure the PR will backfire - despite all the evidence to the contrary right in this thread (massive increases from Steam on the number of gamers 2021, shortages of latest gen consoles useless for mining, worldwide chip shortages, gamers paying near double retail for latest gen consoles, shortages of CPUs essentially useless for mining, etc) people STILL believe it's all the miners fault.
After they release these LHR cards, and they'll be sold out everywhere, gamers won't have miners to blame and will be blaming Nvidia.
@NotAnArtist You don't have to get up early. If you sit in front of a computer for hours a day, you can do it. There are YouTube stock watching channels, just have one going in the background (even better if you have a second monitor). As soon as you get an alert, JUMP ON IT!!! It's also best to already have accounts on Newegg, Amazon, BestBuy, etc. That's what I did and after 2-3 weeks I was able to score a 3000 series card.
How do you tell which version of the 3060's you have? I recently was lucky enough to get a brand new still in the shrinkwrapped box, for near MSRP price, from NewEgg. So, how do I tell if it is the original version or the first attempt at restrictions (too old to be 2nd restricted version). And how does the restricted hash rate (whatever that is) affect DAZers?
They're supposed to be labeled LHR for Lite Hash Rate. As for impact to Iray, it is yet to be seen. The focus is on gamers, we're such a small community we're probably not even considered. That being said though, gaming focuses on 3D rendering performance, so I don't think it's likely.

Well, to some extent it *does* fall pretty heavily at the feet of the miners.
While there is a lot of pressure from gamers upgrading their systems because they're at home, the supply chains probably could have mostly coped if it were just about dealing with that. But with the pressure from the high crypto prices also driving massive demand in that respect, the supply chain is in a "perfect storm" situation where multiple large surges in demand happened simultaneously.
I don't know exactly what percentage of current demand is down to miners, but each percentage point that demand goes past the limits of supply is worse than the last, because the situation becomes increasingly unfair. Miners break out the bots. Scalpers also show up. People start paying scalper prices even if that's not what the hardware is actually worth. It's the people who are prepared to act like selfish brats who still get their cards, whereas people who aren't able or willing to play that game lose out.
Yeah, I though of editing my post, but I did put in ALL the miners fault. Of course, they do contribute to overall demand. Exactly how much is impossible to determine.
The huge demand was explained at launch: Nvida 2000 series cards were very poor on the value (price/performance) and RTX & DLSS 1.0 while exciting tech ran too slow for FPS gamers. Gamer's older 1000 series cards were still good enough for high framerates at 1080p. Lots of gamers skipped the 2000 series cards. Then at the 3000 series launch, there was a MUCH better value (price/performance) AND the new cards could run RTX & DLSS 2.0 with good framerates for online FPS players.
I still don't like the fact that miners can actually manage to get 72 cards - obviously there was some shady backroom sort of deal for anyone to get a hold of that many cards, especially all identical ones.
But the fact that hardware miners don't use is extremely limited (latest gen consoles, 3090's, Ryzen 5000 CPUs, premium overclocking mobos) tells me that gamers are the lion's share. Especially the consoles.
We'll see when the LHR cards come out. If I'm wrong, you'll see them in stock and be able to buy them when they're released. I'd like to be wrong but I doubt I am.
Miners will still snatch up the LHR cards, because even with half the hash rate the RTX 3070 will still mine almost as fast as a GTX 1080 ti... Running a power efficient profile the GTX 1080 ti mines 34MH/s at 130W while the original (not limited) RTX 3070 mines 60MH/s at 117W. A LHR 3070 will probably only use 70W to mine 30MH/s, so still very attractive because of the hashes per watt.
So based on your various comments here, the coming launches will be 'educational,' as usual, but not so productive.
New Egg has been promoting cards like the GTX1650 every few days, but even those get sold out before I see the ads in the mornings.
It's useless for rendering, of course. But I guess the hunger for GPUs is more widespread than I had imagined.
Ha! I laugh at the 1650's mere 4GB VRAM! I proudly own a 6GB 1060!!...
scott762_948aec318a I really can't sit here watching a Youtube stock channel all day, so I'll use the parts I've already purchased, and this will be my glorious new build:
ASRock X570 Taichi MB, G.Skill TridentZ 64GB RAM, Ryzen 7 3700X, and so on, with a GTX 1060.
It's gonna rock!
I am so very glad that I got my RTX 3080 the day they came out.
My son told me to wait since DS was not yet ready for the 30 series, but I am glad I did not listen.
I am so sorry for all those who want a good card and can not get them unless they pay a ridiculous price.:(
IF they still mine efficiently with whatever they do to the chip - that would be a best case scenario for miners. They might not, hurting efficiency. But even with that best case in mind, they still won't be too attractive to miners because the ROI will double. That could drag the return on investment out to 2 years or close to it. How many are going to want to pay near $1000 for a card to break even in 2 years? In 2 years another generation should be out and resale value will also really drop.

@NotAnArtist - You don't have to stare at it, there is also an alarm when something pops up - so just need your speakers or headphones on.
Also I heard of Discord channels but never tried any.
