I get Daz wants to sell content to other platforms, but can it at least be made for Daz?

I bought the Gelatoo set yesterday, and I do admit I could have prevented myself from buying it by reading the description... But is it too much to ask that the products sold here work with Daz natively? If I want to buy ice cream props that required me to import obj's and read a mtl file than I would have bought them at CG Trader or Turbosquid. I've always felt it's a safe assumption that products sold at Daz work natively in Daz w/o extra hoops.

Can't you give it back and get a refund with customer service ?
Obviously I can and will, but my point is that it's frustrating to be at the main store for Daz and you have products not natively supported in Daz. It seems a safe assumption that products sold at Daz would load easily in Daz without having to import individual geometry objects.
Ah, I get it. Yeah, that will make shopping more complicated... Agreed, there always should be a DAZ version included to get accepted at this marketplace.
Daz has sold products for other software for years, so it's not exactly something new.
Kinda weird daz would allow someone to sell something like that here for 25 bucks without even having it set up for DS.
I'll be returning it then. I have enough to do and don't enjoy messing with obj's. Thanks for the headsup
The product page says it includes a duf, what does that do?
.OBJ format is natively supported by Daz, tho? It can be imported into the studio just fine.
File list in readme only lists obj and mtl though.
That is what confused me. It didn't download at all in dim until I went into DAZ dim settings, and included general. It then just downloads the mtl and obj files. I'm not sure why they didn't convert it to duf. The product does say duf.
The first item says "GNBD Gelatoo Lovers (.DUF)", I read that to mean it is supposed to have native load file for DS. Maybe the package is missing it and needs to be updated. Or maybe I am reading it wrong lol.
Since the description says that the props were imported and rendered in DS then it is odd that they could not have spent the few minutes it takes to save each prop as an asset.
I will keep the item wishlisted as it is rare to see items were the food is spilling out of the cone etc. However I will not buy until it is a lot cheaper.
It is actually a bit frustrating these days to pick up a product and find out you read the compatibility wrong. Especially when the compatibility list is Bryce, DAZ for Blender, DAZ for Cinema 4D, DAZ for Unreal, DAZ for Your Kitchen Sink and your eyes just glaze over to, "Huh, for DAZ? Okay."
I only spent a couple bucks on one item, but I'm super careful now and hopeful I can eventually find away to convert the model myself because I like what I bought. I just wish I could use it.
By a bunch of extra steps that wouldn't be needed if the vendor had just saved each item as a proper prop asset. It's a bit like ordering take-out and then the delivery man leaves it on the side of the road by your house. Sure, he technically "delivered it to you." But it's a frickin pain in the neck to put on shoes, go outside, walk down the end of the driveway and then pick up your food and then walk all the way back to your house.
What also surprises me is the price. 24.95$!! For this prop, no matter if as .duf file or as .obj.! It is certainly nice but I think that for example the ROG Fantasy home was much more complex to create and it is at 22.95. And the interior as well. You can get it for 19.95. And compare it to the whole ROG Medieval Fantasy Bedroom for the same 24.95$. I don't understand the pricing policy....
That is not the point though, most here are used to the plug and play aspect of DS and it's content.
Funny, many of the early Polygonal Miniatures products were OBJs only and don't remember seeing an uproar with them. I do agree though, when it comes to props, don't see why they couldn't have just set it up as a preload
This also is a matter of a vendor spending a few minutes setting up the product to be plug-and-play or every single buyer spending said minutes doing the same (adding to that the time spent learning what is going on in many cases). Any utilitarian would be pulling their hair out.
When I loaded the object, by default they are quite large. The texture did load automatically, and there are mat zones. HOWEVER. The product does not have iray textures. And loads with the shiny plastic quality of an item not optimized for iray. And yes, it is all one piece, so you will have to conceal the dripping I am not sure under what context you might have a cone an with a moat of melted ice cream this large beneath. Fortunately, I have some newly acquired food shaders. We shall see.
If you have the food shaders sold here https://www.daz3d.com/41-food-shaders it sort of works, but I see some seam distortion on places and edges, which make it look odd as you can see with the cone on some of the shapes.
We have asked Daz about the Gelatoo product.
One of the things that early on made me decide to stick to making freebies when it came to DAZ/Poser content was DAZ's fairly high standard of quality... Not that I didn't want to make quality stuff, it's just that in my opinion my "decent" quality stuff was still below DAZ's average.
Some of the stuff I've been seeing lately is making me rethink that assessment.
This... So much this. I went from Daz was the golden seal of quality to "If they didn't have a return policy I wouldn't buy anything, because half of what I buy these days is janky and bloated and has to be returned." I'm not happy that this is the case, it's more sad than anything
At this point Renderotica has better QC
I almost made the mistake of getting it, but at the last minute realized it is not made for Daz. I do think that while it is perfectly ok to sell items not made for Daz, there should be a more conspicuous flagging/warning to prevent accidental purchases. When most items sold are Daz content, some sort of extra flagging is necessary IMO.
When this product installs, it dumps all contents in a folder called OBJ No subfolder saying it is gellato. Just OBJ.
Also, my version of Studio, doesn't seem to 'see' the mtl files. There is no mtl in the file typelist.
Yeah. That is a lot for a couple of props, not to mention the fact that they are .objs without optimized textures.
Because the UV map on that cone is a flat projection.
MTL files are supposed to be loaded automagically when you load the OBJ. Without it there would be no material zones etc
The more Daz compatability junk I have to read the less I feel the urge to buy.
And if an expensive prop was not already D|S native format then I would request a refund.
Even if it was on sale for $0.01¢
(Just to make the sales team happy)
Interesting. Thanks for enlightening me.
