Grasp Helper for Genesis 8 and Genesis 8.1 - ideas?

  • I was excited when I saw Grasp Helper appear on the marketplace and bought it immediately...

But I can't seem to get it to do much of anything...least of all the dramatic effects that have been achieved here by others...It's not creating the grasp/squeeze effect and I'm a bit confused...

I have to admit up front that these sorts of things are usually my own fault...And I'll just keep trying. I'm sure it's a great product when used correctly...

But the instructions provided are quite short and simple...And I am doing ( many times now) the exact procedures instructed therein...

So, I guess I'll experiment with rez levels, collision iterations and other things, etc...to see where I'm making a mistake.

Guess I'm saying that perhaps some further instructions might be a good idea for those of us having problems with it..?

    Thanks...

Since it looks like iWave is here...I just bought this and when I apply it to my G8.1 Male, I keep getting "Error opening file" when I run the script. It says "An error occured while reading the file, see the log file for more details," and leaves his hands looking incredibly deformed.

Here's what's in the log file:

  • Can anyone help me on the substitutes? When I use it on another figure all the materials change to pure white and I can't seem to get rid of it, but if I hide the substitute I have nothing but the clothes they're wearing. I've tried re-adding the materials to both the figure and the substitute to no avail. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,

This error message usually means that you are using an older version of daz studio. The scripts of Grasp Helper were created in version 4.15. The lower versions cannot open these scripts.

You just need to update your daz studio to the latest version, and the problem will be solved.

    Hi,

I am very sorry for the inconvenience, because my tutorial is too crude.
Maybe we can start with some simple scenes, such as your character holding a ball. Then you need:
    1. Load the character in daz studio and create the ball. The higher the Segments and Sides of the ball are set, the finer the final result will be.
    2. Let the character's hand make a grasping gesture and move the ball roughly to the position of his hand.
    3. Choose your role and apply the grass helper to him. Then you will see the result in the viewport.
    4. Fine-tune the position of the ball to make the result look more natural.
    5. If you find that the surface of the ball is abnormally deformed after applying the grass helper, or the character's fingers are wrapped by the surface of the ball. You can select the ball first, then open the Optimization Options window, and adjust the corresponding slider according to the tips to eliminate the abnormal phenomenon. Similarly, if you feel that the deformation of the ball is too severe, you can increase the "Smoothing Iterations" to smooth the surface of the ball.

    Hi,
I checked the code again and found that my previous judgment was wrong.
I would like to know if your G8.1 Male character uses PBRSkin? If so, I think I found the cause of the problem. Please send me a private message and I will send the new script for you to test.
If it can solve the problem you are experiencing, I will add it to the update.

    Hi,

Thank you very much for the screenshot. I would like to know if you have applied Geometry Shell to Suzzy?

    No, I haven't.
  • Actually, let me double check if some of the materials are geoshell instead of L.I.E. that actually makes perfect sense.

By comparison, I tried running Shape Reprojector to compare the results, and it's been running for nearly 13 hours with no visible results yet. Grasp Helper runs very quickly.

Has anyone ever gotten that product to work? Not being sarcastic, but it either runs forever and does nothing or it crashes. Pure piece of garbage.

Yeah, me too...I can't get any results..."grasped figure" grays out and then a long wait...but nothing happens...haven't a clue why...tried repeatedly.

  • Folks are having some success from Grasp Helper, as indicated by the posts here.

I just cannot get it to work. I've tried everything. Gen8 female and gen8 male grabbing...both at base rez and also at default rez...it has no effect at all other than removing the texture materials from the G8 figure it's applied to.

I'm using the latest Daz Studio and have even tried the beta version.

There must be something I'm doing wrong.

Is anyone else having a problem or have any suggestions?

    Thanks.

I have tried every DAZ trick in the book to make Grasp Helper work but I cannot get a thing out of it...I would normally ask for a refund, but I think you might be going to update it..?

I have used multiple figure combinations, simulation settings and whatever else I can think of, but no results...I'm very competent in Daz Studio (I'm using both the latest production version and also the beta version...I have both)...but Grasp Helper is defeating me...just no results...not working for me...

Do you have any ideas? Or even a more comprehensive manual..?

    Thanks...

    a few suggestions

    add long gloves

these short gloves depending on what you grab doesnt cover the pressed area.

    also add stockings aswell.

you may want to press something with your foot

How did you solve the problem. I'm facing the same issue. The model is all white.

    Hi @iwave,

I'm playing with grasp helper and I'm having an issue with the transfer of one of the materials zones. In the scene I have a G8.1 figure grasping another G8.1 figure.

Everything works well except that the HEAD material zone in the subsitute figure is wrong. All other materials zones are fine. The HEAD uses the same png as the BODY, however it seems that the scale or something is off. I can see the seams on the top and sides of the head. My figure has tattoos on the body and I can see the tattoos plastered again on the head. I tried copying and pasting the HEAD materials from the original figure into the substitute with no luck. All vertical and horizontal tiles are at default value 1.0 and the offsets are zero.

In case it matters, as I said, the figure being grasped has tattoos in the body zone and also additional geoshells.

    Cheers.

Ok never mind... that's not your product ... the issue is on my side. Disregard my previous message.

    Cheers.

The solution is that in my case I had a shell on another figure in the scene...by selecting that shell and going into the parameters tab, under visibility at the bottom, I had to turn the shell off for specific bodies and other parts of the scene...does that make sense..? If not I can make it clearer maybe...

I tried to use grasp helper in my character, but the rest of the body is white and I don't get to remove or hidden it. Help me please, I'm novice in DAZ Studio and don't understand well how grasp helper works, but is a amazing tool.

I've been running into the solid white geoshell issue, as well, on clean GF8.1 characters with no additional geografts or geoshells applied to the figure.

I'm sure it's got to be a shell conflict issue, but I haven't had much time to track it down.

Which is sad, because I really want this to be a good solution for some of the things I want to do.

Can this be used to grasp a clump of hair?

    Hi!

I'd like to ask - could you implement a support for female UV applied onto male person? There's a possibility to do that in DS, but I saw (on another PC, not mine), that after applying the script to G8M (8.0) grabbing his arm, "Substitute  - G8M" has got only "default" or Base 8.1 Male UV selection to choose, whereas it was G8F UV being used on male figure.

Thanks in advance for any response!

  • UthgardUthgard Posts: 866

That is a damn shame, though an understandable limitation. I think there are ways to transfer UV maps to figures with a shared UV map, though I'm not sure how to do that. In case you've got an urgent need for this, what you could always do is to use the map transfer utility to make an alternative material set with the available UV.

It's a pretty straightforward, though tedious, process:

  • Richard HaseltineRichard Haseltine Posts: 102,279

What dose the discussion of UVs have to do with Grasp Helper?

  • UthgardUthgard Posts: 866

Apparently, the substitute figure only has the base UVs and not the ones of the original figure.

I'm still kind of lost on how this is any different than making it yourself, (hide every part of the G8 you don't need, export as obj with higher subd, import back, add as collision object on the object you want grabbed/squeezed, hide the obj)

does this improve in any way how the smoothing mod actually works or something?

Okay, so I'm quite familiar with this method, and it works great when figure1 grabs figure2. But uh. If I want figure1 to grab themselves. After I hide the collision object, and bring figure1's hand into the pre-grabbed deformed section. It then also collides with the hidden object. How do you hide an object and make it so it's prior collisions remain intact but it generates no new collisions?

Can anyone explain that step to me please?
