Thank you!
I noticed that the eyes didn't look right. I substituted Natural Eyes. This is the medium skin tone on a dialed morph.
This is awesome!
This is the darker female skin texture. The eyes are Natural Eyes again.
The thumbnails and texture files for arms and legs have datestamps from 2016 (Genesis 3?)
The dummy/placeholder files for expressions are still in G8.1 morph folders.
I am also confused but the confusion arises out of what, precisely, is 8.1? As far as I know I don't have any 8.1 characters. I have several G8F characters but no G8M males. I have a few G3M males though but the are not DAZ base characters (other than Michael 7). So is there anything that I could use in this give-away?
If you have updated the Genesis 8 Starter Essentials after G8.1 was released, you do have the G8.1 base figures.
The .duf files to load the skins onto the figure are for 8.1...meaning they use the head/body formatting. The actual skins use the original G3 monochromatic sss shader formatting - the shader settings themselves don't appear to be any different than they were when the figures were originally released (i.e. Monique 7).
I can't find any of this even after updating the files in the DAZ Install Manager.
Load the G8.1 figure and then go to the content library panel...they are under People - Genesis 8 Female (or Genesis 8 Male) - Materials.
Genesis 3 Character UVs for Genesis 8 Female
Genesis 3 Character UVs for Genesis 8 Male
Bought 'em cheap last month myself but haven't used yet.
I haven't tried it, but I suspect you could easily load the dev loads for G8.1, export them at base resolution as .obj, and then import them as UV sets to G8. Then you could at least use the texture mats, if not the shader.
I see why the eyes have those funny rings, that is in the texture itself!
Considering that these were Genesis 3 characters, it would have made sense to let them be 8.0 UV maps. The 8.1 neck UV is not going to benefit a texture that was originally made for the old UV, which defeats the whole purpose of using the 8.1 UV. And as we have seen with the eyes, converting the eye textures to 8.1 is not that simple of a task. It requires some manual editing to get right. When it comes to the torso split, what I don't understand is why we can't have both. The torso map is exactly the same for 8.1, except the top portion is missing. Why can't we have this portion still be present, while ALSO offering the new 8.1 neck texture at the same time? The torso texture would be usable for both 8 and 8.1. If I ever design a character, this is exactly what I would do, to give customers both options (and it isn't hard to do because I have done it myself.)
Again this is a nice gesture, so I kind of hate to complain, but Daz always seems to confuse people with their vague statements. The banner makes no mention of Genesis 8.1 at all, so it very understandable that people are going to think this was about Genesis 8.0. Even weirder is that these textures come from Genesis 3 era models. That isn't a problem, but it is kind of odd, and the difference in UV has impacted how the new textures turned out.
...
A bit annoying that the additions don't include 3DL materials, but I gather that 8.1 can use 8.0 skins, which mean they probably can use the original skins.
I might have the 8.1 base figure but I have no 8.1 characters. I never use the 8.0 base figure except to dial in a (8.0) character and/or morphs.
8.1 has access to all your 8.0 morphs.
You can do the same thing with the G8.1 base figure. Just load it up and then dial in whatever G8 figure shape you want...you'll get your G8 figure with the benefit of the G8.1 facial rig.
It is a nice gesture for sure, but it seems that in retooling the textures for 8.1, they must of forgotten to do the eyes.. Also these new textures definitely won't work with Genesis 8, as they have been changed to the new texture setup that Genesis 8.1 is now using, such as where the head and body now use two completely different textures..
You should be fine in downloading the starter essentials update, as these new textures live in the Genesis 8_1\FemaleBase/MaleBase texture folders.. And will/should leave the Genesis 8\FemaleBase/MaleBase texture folders untouched..
Yes, that's why I gave my thanks.
So are there the equivalent head morphs to "match" the new skin materials for the G8.1 Base Male & Female?
for Genesis 8 there is always the map transfer but you would need to use G8.1 to produce the texture maps for the other UV, only actually need torso and head I think it uses the same legs and arms etc
Ah, I see. That is clearly where my confusion stems from. So I can dial-in a G8 character on a 8.1 base figure but I must then use an 8.1 skin texture?
No, you can use 8.0 skins on 8.1 figures. It doesn´t work the other way 'round though.
At least not without some manual work-arounds that sound intimidating (to me).
I´m kind of surprised no one has released a "8.1 UV´s for 8.0" product yet, sounds perfectly doable and sensible?
In any case, more beefcake! A tweaked Kwan with the new Lee 7 skin and Jepe´s bodyhair magic:

I don't think that would work - the head and body in the new mapping overlap, which is fine for 8.1 as those are separate surface groups, but it would not work for 8 without redoing the grouping or a GeoGraft for the whole of one os the surface groups to achieve the same result.
Using G8.1 UVs on G8 would require at the very least creating new surface for the head.
Anyway, thanks for the new skins. Yeah, the eyes are what they are but I'm not going to use the default eye textures.
