...living by myself, no big holiday dinner planned here. Besides I always like to do something "non traditional" on holidays. Yeah the Holiday Police probably have quite the dossier on my by now.  Teriyaki? Chili? Curry? Cajun Catfish and Roasted Potatoes? Burgers? Pizza?.  I did once make a Turkey Burger for Thanksgiving.

I heard a rumor from my fish Loki than a week from tomorrow is Thanksgiving!  How can that be true?

edited for spelling.  still getting used to the time change I guess.

...wish my studio flat was 2.99$ a month.  Crikey even at 299$ it would be a savings.

We pay $700 a month for a 2 bedroom townhouse with a basement plus all of our utilities. If we had the credit to by a house we would be paying half that amount a month. We live in one of the top 5 cheapest places in the US to live as well.

...where is that?  Here a single room in a shared place is upwards of 750$ or more a month unless you are out in the sticks (which still costs around 600$ - 650$), and that's sans equal utility share (which is often not very "equitable" when one person takdes a 30 min hot shower or cranks up the heat in their room). My first apartment I had here 30 years ago was less than half that and it was a huge 1 BR with hardwood floors and gas heat/stove within walking distance of downtown.  Then came the northward migration and high tech.  Today that same apartment rents for about 4 times what I paid.

when  we first got married, nigh on 50 years ago, our first appartment was a large 2 bedroom, with heat and water included (we paid for electricity) at $125 month (and $50 would get us 2 weeks groceries, granted, my salary was $90.00 per week. Now we are in a 1100sq ft 2 bedroom condo with all utilities inclued (we pay for phone,TV and Internet), river valley views, heated underground parking,  and a 24 hour front desk concierge/security, for $737 a month

We are in a town in NE Ohio. Once referred to as murder town USA because of the mob presence. Our current county prosecutor cleaned the town up in the early 80's and pretty much gave the boot to the mob. Granted, the mob put a hit on him and was nearly shot to death in his home but he recovered and came out in full force and either got them out of here or behind bars. Now the violence is contributed to gang violence and drugs, which there is a lot of.

I'm sitting here virtually attending an online lecture of a quite famous legal academic and former international judge that I thought was going to be fascinating but is really very, VERY boring. I have to attend it nevertheless because it's expected by the institute I work for. So now I'm watching it with half an eye while scanning the forums here and drinking some nice warm mulled wine, and the more drunk (drunker?) I get, the more interesting the lecture becomes. Gotta love the internet sometimes ...

Also read about you guys' Thanksgiving donations, I think you're very sweet people. I'm sure it's much appreciated.

Murdertown... that's near East Stabbyville, across the Drownington River by Slaughterburg?
The part of NYC where I grew up was pretty rough in the 80s, primarily due to crack and other drugs... it was an industrial neighborhood, but now it's mostly high rise hotels and condominiums... it's weird to go through there now and see tourists wheeling their suitcases out of the subway (which has a frickin' elevator) at night in an area where nobody really wanted to go during the daytime.

The 80s crack/drug epidemic made the area very crimey... My friend was a housing authority police officer (in the 80s the NYPD had a lot of different departments like housing and transit, in addition to the regular NYPD)...  he would park his car in front of the station (which was more of "substation" than full precinct or "station")... One day he parked around the corner (but still next to the station) and after he came off of his shift and was going back to his car, he noticed how clean his windows looked... which turned out to be because someone had stolen all the glass from it... all of it (and the back seat too, plus the side mirrors)
Granted, it was a tempting target because it was a popular "parts car", but you gotta have brass ones to not even bother to steal the car, and brazenly disassemble it in front of a police station.
Yeah, the 80s in NYC were a fun time.

Yeah for sure, but is funny. About the most that ever happened to our cruisers is we'd go on a call and come out to 4 punchered tires. Our personal vehicles that were parked in the parking lot of the station had more damage done to them than our cruisers. We had break lines cut, punchered tires, damaged locks, cracked windshields and gas syphoned. Got to the point that counsel had us park our vehicles in the garage cause they were tired of fixing our vehicles.

...yep, I know where that is, but I've been done with "real winter" for years now so no leaving where i am anytime soon for mopre congenial rental climates.  Scary about the gang violence being so prevalent . We have that here but most of it is in the outer environs because it just got too expensive to live in the inner neighbourhoods after all eh gentrification and upscale development.

I'm only in the central area because I cleared a wait list for a low income studio on the edge of a new high rent neighbourhood that is built in an area of abandoned freight terminals and rail yards over the last two decades (my building is where a roundhouse used to be)..Yeah, "low income" which is only 200$ less per month than the 2 BR townhouse you mentioned about.

As I'm on the edge that separates expensive condos, apartments, restaurants, and bistros from our town's "tenderloin district", it's not unusual to hear people drunk or strung out on who knows what walking outside my window (from five floors up) shouting, sometimes screaming, or having loud arguments with someone else.  I've heard gunshots over the last few months and recently there were two shooting incidents close by that were both gang related (fortunately no one was hurt but in one a number of parked carrs ended up with bullet holes in them).  Aside from that it is nice having a lot of places like shops, markets, cafes, and pubs within walking distance (I rarely even ride transit unless I need to go across town or need to make a big market trip.

Oh, and winter usually means just more rain and maybe an occasional "dusting" of snow for a day or so that sends the city into "snowmageddon" panic mode with day long non-stop coverage (OK, a "dusting" by Wisconsin standards which is a couple five inches)..

...yeah what is affectionately referred to as the Rust belt (the lower Great Lakes area) took quite a beating from the late 1970s on through the 90s.  My hometown, Milwaukee WI, has lost something like 1/5th of it's population.  Back when I was growing up there it was often referred to as The Machine Shop To The World.  Lots of old foundries and plants were abandoned, a number of them raised for new development since then. I remember from my yard I could hear the large forge hammers of the Milwaukee Forge shop about a mile away. which was surrounded by a residential neighbourhood.  Lots of  small machine shops were scattered throughout the city.

The old Allen Bradley plant towards downtown (now Rockwell Automation) for a long time had the largest four faced clock tower (completed in 1962) in the world which was eclipsed by the clock tower on the NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building in 2002.

That was not the first time the city held a world title, as for about four and a half years between 1895 and 1899 the city's gothic styled city hall was the tallest building in the world at 354 ft. (bettered in late 1899 by the 390' tall Park Row Building in New York City),

...this is getting more and more frustrating.  They really need to deal with their server issue here as once again after just fixing a typo that slipped through in the post above yet another bad gateway error.

Fine on my end, fine on Clouflare's end, its always the Host where the issue is.

Funny how things change over time.  Used to be we loved "snow days" because school would be cancelled and we could sled around or whatever.  These days, I hate snow days...it means dangerous driving (look out for idiots!),  and shoveling or snow-blowing the driveway and sidewalk, and making a path to the mailbox afte the snow plows have buried it, and making a path to the fire hydrant...just in case it's needed.

Happy Birthday!! Be sure to have a great one. We had snow this morning but no accumulation thank god. I need to replace the front tires on my truck and haven't saved up enough money yet to do it. We replaced the back two several months ago but didn't have the money to do all 4. I know what you mean about snow on your birthday. My birthday was on the 13th and when I was growing up there was ALWAYS snow on the ground. My dad use to take me hunting on my birthday every year and could track everything from the snow. Now we are lucky if we get accumulating snow by Christmas. Most years now we don't get any until mid Jan. We are lucky to get more than a half dozen or so days of accumulating snow throughout the season now. I can't complain too much though cause this cold weather kills my back and legs. I have such a hard time even moving this time of the year.

Complaint:  I'm still waiting for my Ryzen CPU to come back from the 'puter shop.  It's in the mail. ('puter shop is 10 miles away and all my rides are unobtainium).

Still not sure what my problem is.  Fans run, RGB lights run, Just zippo, nada, nunca, on the display.  Finally found a list of "Beep codes"  for my motherboard (Asus: "TUF Gaming B450M-Plus II") but it hasn't helped.  'Cause I got no beeps.frown

Resolution:  I resolve that I will NEVER again buy a motherboard that doesn't have at least diagnostic LEDs if not numeric error codes.enlightened

'Nother Resolution:  I will think long and hard before buying another AMD based CPU & Motherboard.  'Tain't worth the headaches.sad

    Happy Birthday LG!!

And to everyone else... Happy World Toilet Day!!

I actually came here to wish everyone the last one, but then I saw that it was LG's birthday and I figured I should mention that first... but then I thought about it and decided I would be remiss if I didn't add the part about it being world toilet day...

I was going to write a bit about the importance of toilets and how if we didn't have them our lives would be a lot smellier or that we'd probably be using human sized versions of kitty litter boxes (it's a thing in three other slightly stupider parallel timelines)... and how civilization would be completely different if we didn't have them (it's actually a prerequisite to have some form of toilets to be considered for membership in the Galactic Union)...(it's actually comes right after "Language" and before "Deep Space Travel")...(which I suppose makes sense, because if you have deep space travel, you really aught to have toilets too, or it gets really messy inside)... but anyway, I decided I won't detract from LG's special day by making too big a deal about toilets.

But still, if you get a chance maybe go hug your toilet or at least say thanks to it for all the crap it has to deal with... literally.

    And once again...

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY LG!!
