Pose set observation

I ran a photography studo for nearly 20 years, and posing is very important to me. I've got an extensive collection now of G8 poses, and I'm starting to notice a trend.
1) A lot of the female poses are more, shall I say, contrived and look like they are more for pinup than everyday situations (with the exception of those that come made for specific props with a go-to feature for that pose and figure against that prop.)
2) There's not a lot of variety among similar poses.
For what it's worth, if you create poses and sell them, I have a recommendation. Look at photos of people in real-life situations, and mimic that.
P.S. I think one of these days I'm going to organize my poses in to folders based on similarities. I wonder how many will be so close to another pose by another person that they they will be indistinguisable.

The issue is that many want the more sexy, pinup type poses over the everyday, boring, poses, not that they don't exist. I do agree, there are a lot of similarities when it comes to pinup poses, even from some PAs own sets. I tend to use poses as starting points and then once I get it how i want it, just save a copy of the new pose for future use. After awhile, you will be using your own poses as the go to instead of store products.
Base Pose Standing A in the G8 starter essentials drives me crazy, because what even is that pose supposed to be? Why would anyone ever stand like that, even for fashion modeling purposes?
It always drives me crazy that pretty much every female pose (in general), even just a simple standing pose, has some level of cat-in-heat desperation about it. You know what mean...overly arched back, butt thrust out, tits to the sky. Good lord my back would be in knots if I went about life like that.
I always customize my poses, but when I'm looking for something to start building from, many times it's a 'male' pose. Because they're...how shall I say it...normal.
Unfortunately it sells but there is a growing quantity of male and female poses I can't use simply because i already have for example 3-4 of G8m flexing his muscles like a bodybuilder. I've noticed in particular pose sets in bundles tend to be rather boilerplate.
And this is the reason I don't buy pose sets, unless they are incredibly unique. I honestly prefer to make my own poses.
Totally agree. I think over 90% of the poses I have purchased are useless to me, a lot have been included with bundles, others just contained a few poses I could use, and then there a lot of lookalikes or simply just poor quality or weird looking ones.
Most of the traffic on my DA comes from centaur fetishists. Nearly every time I see who's liked one of my centaur/mermaid renders, I click on their profile and just see a bunch of naked half-women, often doing something sexual, usually with their breasts ballooned to improbable shape and size.
Hmm. I'm sure you are mostly correct, @certaintree38 . My biggest download freebie item at Rendo freebies is one I was a bit dubious about offering because it is easily used as pron - however it was part of a set of 100 I was converting, after asking permission, from V3 to G8F and I wanted it to be complete. On the plus side though, in a week or three at the current rate of downloads, it will have been overtaken by a set of 5 stretching poses for athletics (https://www.renderosity.com/freestuff/items/87647/g8f-athletic-stretching-01-to-05) which somewhat restores my faith in humanity. And hopefully they meet the requirements of @melissastjames and @Db3d for not being cat-on-heat or identikit unrealistic pinup poses, either. I have noted those comments and will try to bear them in mind in the future when I make further sets.
Thinking of further items that are not really identikit pinup poses, I'd say a lot of freebie poses by bbarbs over on Rendo do fall in that category.
My bugbear is realistic walking poses - there are relatively few to my eyes. There are a lot of catwalk strutting poses, but few walking/ mooching/ aimless wandering poses. The best single pose seems to be the G8F base pose walking A (not the walking and waving one which I think is walking B). And that's almost all the good ones mentioned...

Richard
Richard, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but you're fooling yourself if you think those aren't being used for naughty purposes.
Call me naive if you want, but my imagination doesn't run that far. And if yours does, I really don't want to know how.![surprise surprise](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/omg_smile.png)
Regards,
Richard.
I just laughed so hard, I think I might have woken someone up.
I will say, there are some amazing pose sets by some that, while I'm sure could be used for The Pr0n, as anything can be...but poses by Aeon Aoul will always be in my library to use as jumping off points for things like walking...or simply to use for hands, etc. I'm a person who likes to deconstruct poses...like I'll be looking for a specific arm/hand pose and hodge-podge stuff together. I find it insanely difficult to build poses from nothing, starting from the base A position. I just can't ever seem to know where to go from there. But if I can get myself in the neighborhood with a pre-made pose, or combining several pre-made poses (arms from one, legs, from another, hands from someplace else), then I can move individual bones to tweak into exactly what I want. One of the first things I "correct" is the hip/torso area because 9 times out of 10 it's so bent into an extreme 'arching cat' position that I can't even fathom that being comfortable. Sometimes the center of gravity needs to be corrected...such as legs needing to be planted more firmly spaced on the ground. But anyways...it's always helpful if I can get at least something of a jumping off point. And poses from PA's like Aon Soul and 3D Sugar and Shimuzu have been great building blocks for me. DM on Rendo is also pretty great, though there is more of a level of cat-in-heat about some of their poses...but that can be corrected.
EXACTLY! LOL. I love the way you stated it.
On the other hand, if I'm looking for wall art to decorate a scene, I have no shortage of pin up poses for quick poster if the room belongs to a teen or college-age male...![laugh laugh](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/teeth_smile.png)
I understand being irritated by it; but being real here, I use sexy/pin-up/model poses (for both men and women) more than any other kind. I guess I'm just basic like that :)
That being said I will only very rarely actually spend money on those kind of poses. There are countless free ones out there by OneSix, Zeddicus, Adam Thwaites, etc. Plus, we used to regularly get pose packs like that in the bi-weekly freebies here; and they're frequently included as filler in bundles.
If you want my money, make poses that have two or more characters interact with each other in intricate ways. Those I'm most likely to buy.
Pose with camera set would be awesome .
OP is pretty much why I don't spend much on pose sets. The level of tweaking required makes it not worth it.
Most of the pinup/naughty poses do recycle the same few variants so if you have one larger set then you have them all.
Even if one is hell-bent on smut the more useful ones with, khm, INTERACTING figures would never fly in Daz store.
Just get one larger modelish set, one of iG 100 basic larger sets for G8F/M and start tweaking from there. Pose control addons are much better purchases anyway.
Fighting poses are another one. Half of them plainly suicidal. Gonna KILL myself with my own blade, RAWR!
Smut's fine and dandy but often I use G8M fighting poses on G8F. Even if they are fantasy stylized blade ballet they still have more feel of brutality to them.
It´s a decent flexing/beefcake pose. You have to turn the character a bit to make it look good.
Sorry, I should have specified the female version. That one looks pretty goofy to me, too, but then I have neither interest in nor knowledge of bodybuilding.
All valid points, and well taken here.
For me, it's a time-saver. If I can start with a purchased pose, and make very little adjustments, all the better. My complaint is, there are some real life poses that simply don't exist or are very difficult to find.
As to making money... I'm done with making money. I'm old, worked very hard to retire and enjoy my wife and family, and do artwork as a stress and creative release. It helps me cope with not being able to do all the things I used to be able to do.
Yes, I've noticed that. It's as if they took a pose they previously published, and then clicked a couple of times on the head's bend slider and put that in their new product. But, people buy them.
Just like Zombie above I also never buy pose collections, in my opinion it's more than often a waste of cash, at least for me. Now don't get me wrong here: I do value (and admire) all the time and effort that goes into them, and I also use a decent collection of (standard) poses myself as well from time to time, but only to provide a quick starting point (I really should consider saving my home-made poses sometimes but... I usually can't be bothered because many are (too) specific for the scenes in which I use them).
Now, sure, it takes time but considering all the advancements that have been made for DS over the years I can't imagine not making my own poses anymore. The pose tool in the viewport is an invaluable asset to me, especially in combination with the universal tool. And then there's the PowerPose pane, a tool I don't use often enough but... it's very satisfying to work with IMO.
I sporadically also "abuse" puppeteer if I want to try some pose variations and I need to make up my mind about 'm. It takes getting used to (I had a really hard time getting my fingers behind Puppeteer (and I still struggle sometimes)) but it can be really useful as well.
Yeah, IMO all you need is time.
What I can't get my head around are pose sets with only high heel foot poses. I won't buy a pose set if it only has high heel poses. Include flat feet as well.
I don't buy pose sets because yeah, most of the poses in the store are a bit rediculous and have no resemblance to how a real person would stand/sit/walk/reach. What I did was to buy the walking and conversation sets from Mocap Online here at DAZ and just create about 200 or so conversation/walking/running single frame poses made from the the end points, mid points and anywhere in between those animations. They look fantastic and since it's mocap'd you get the small intricacies of human movement. Hip and weight shifting, foot angle/swivel while walking, proper looking shoulder movement, etc.
Like many of you, I've pulled back on pose sets. I'll only buy them if it's interacting figures, a great deal, or something I've never seen before. How many hands-on-hips or flexing poses can one have? I looked through my pose library, and there are MANY. Plus, there is a freebie over on DA where it converts G3 to G8 poses. So, that limits me buying any other G8 pose sets. I think Zeddicuss does great work in ordinary and extraordinary situations for poses. 3D Sugar is next level. His 101 model series (for both G8M and G8F) is high quality.
Plus, PedroFurtadoArts' Standing Idle for Genesis 8 Female and Male set is a must own. I saw it and said to myself, "It's a pose set where they are just standing around? BRILLIANT!"
This thread drew my feeling about the lack of reasonable 'normal' walking poses available to a head. So, having looked in a mirror and seen someone who could try to do something about it, I've now posted two groups of five normal, everyday, walking poses in the freebie forum for your delectation should you be interested. https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/513261/g8f-walking-and-wandering-poses.
If you could add known links to similar everyday freebie poses, it could turn into a very useful as a resource to be used to avoid the sort of over-exaggerated poses complained about in this thread. And if you have any similar poses you have created that you'd be willing to share as freebies, please help fill the identified gap in what's available. Not all useful stuff has to be bought..

You can however lock the feet on the figure (in default pose) before applying heel poses. Personally I use this one, it can be accessed via the menu so it's easy to lock/unlock body parts (in this case select the feet and then "Lock selected bones and children"). I guess a simple script could do both selection and locking, maybe there is one out there.

These are great for standing poses as well:

I actually think Zeddicus is guilty popping every hip and arching every back. Now as I said, I have no issue at all with "sexy" poses but I wouldn't go to their products for "everyday" kind of poses.
Now, 3DSugar I will co-sign. Their poses are great.
Shout out to Those Things; their Superhero and fighting poses are incredible value for money.
