Ohh Thats good news, Thanks
@ James JAB, ...thanks for confirming that. Again not being into games wasn't sure if what I posted was correct.
Hi, I made this new render today on my laptop :)
Bit grainy, but I am satisfied. Did some post work in photoshop. How is it?
Good but I would tone down the green lights in his clothing. Also, change the color of the green to that old fashioned glow-in-the-dark green in some watches and such before they made that illegal. It's radium I think what was used for glow-in-the-dark items.
Thanks, I tried to tone down the emissive green, but it looked dull and also lost the emmissive effect
Yeah, not sure how you'd actually get it like a proper glowing green radium. I think you need a) reduce the strength of the lumens, b) make the surfaces reflective as well c) change the color green d) turn on bloom
Yours still look great though.
...hmm still thinking about that 3,000 limit$.
Yesterday I began to configure an upgrade to turn my current system into a Linux based W7 VM machine through PC PartPIcker but hit the brick wall with the cost of a 12 GB 3060 (799$ - more that twice the normal price). So relying on my trusty Maxwell Titan-X not to be dropped from Iray support in a year or so ,actually managed to come up with a reasonable setup based on a Skylake I7 at half the target..
CPU: Intel Core i7-9800X 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor ($699.95 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 54 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($79.99 @ Best Buy)
Motherboard: Asus Prime X299-A II ATX LGA2066 Motherboard ($344.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 64 GB (4 x 16 GB) DDR4-2666 CL16 Memory ($309.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Pro SP1 DE OEM 64-bit ($59 @ Amazon)
Total: $1493.2
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
This would also have Linux Mint (0$.cost)
48 GB of memory would be dedicated to the VM to cover rendering with 12 GB of VRAM.
This is designed for further expansion should current GPU prices ever come back down. (that 24 GB 3090 sounds so nice but would have to up the system RAM to 128, allocating 96 GB to the VM.
The X299 motherboard is available at Amazon for $302.
The Intel Core i7 9800X runs a bit hot. I would not get the H60. Go with at least the H105 (240 mm) or H115 (280 mm). I have an older 8086K and on full load, with a H115 temp can reach upward to 75°C. If you have space in your case for a larger radiator, I would go with a larger one.. If you live in the US, $2000 can get you a decent RTX3060 system with quality components. and for $2300 even one in a ITX small form factor (15 liter or less)
...not enough room at the rear of the case for dual fans as I'd want the unit to vent air outside the case.
Never was into prebuilds as one, it is often difficult to get exactly what you want (which is why I'm one of those DIY geeks) and two, they often come with barely adequate cases and PSUs as well as W10 (usually Home Edition) and a lot of useless bloatware. The reason I picked the 9800X was because of the core count, speed, price, number of memory channels, and fact it still supports W7 for the VM. All AMD Ryzen and newer Intel i-series CPUs not only just support W10, but also only two memory channels (my old system has 3 memory cannels and there is a difference, not about to step backwards).
As to case size, I have an old Antec P-193 which is huge (almost a full tower) that has 6 fans and copious space inside.. Not going to go to some mini case where everythig inside is crammed more tightly together which makes it hard to do maitnenence or upgrading and requires a motherbord that is more limited in the way of PCIe slots, DIMM slots, and extrenal ports.
As mentioned, I already have a 12 GB card that should be fine for a while until (hopefully) prices for RTX cards come back down to something resembling sanity again, then I'll get a 3060 (or maybe an A4000 with 16 GB). Yeah, it's not quite as fast as an RTX but no slouch either (as long as I render in 4.10 or 4.11 to avoid the OptiX accelerator set to "on" by default)
The more serious issue right now is Nvidia dumping new driver support for W7/8.1. For now I'll keep downloading new driver installers and storing them in a folder until the updates cease, then I'll use the most recent one I have.
@kyoto kid, Look what I found;
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/supported/windows-7-supported-intel-processors
And with it found myself a processor for the Asus WS X299 SAGE/10G that I bought earlier, it's going to be driven by i9-9940X, which costs 670eur (VAT24% included).
Just have to get my car fixed first for the annual inspection, to see how much 'play money' I'm left with.
...thank you. The Xeon CPUs are of particular interest as they are lower power and more apt to have more than just 4 cores. Any upgrade I do I would like to be a "step-up" (I currently have a Westemere 6 core Xeon and would like to at least move to 8 or 10 cores as I use other programmes that benefit form higher core counts)
I thought the early i9s (which were Skylake-X) were the first to only supported W10. I'll have to look into them as well.
Here's little secret for getting a RTX 30x0 card at retail price.
If you are patient, go to the EVGA website make a login. when loged in, you can add yorself to the queue for any graphics card you want by clicking the "Auto Notify" button (including the $329 RTX 3060 12GB). When your place in line comes up in a few months, they will send you a link via email to purchase the card (If you do not purchase within 8 hours the card goes to the next in the queue).
...already on their waiting list.
Didn't you say, you already bought an X299 motherboard?
Xeons would need the C422 chipset.
...no only looking at them along with others. Need to get the money up first for any sort of major upgrade. I''m currntly running an X5660 on an X58 MB with an :LGA1366 socket.
Aah... Ok.
If you do go the X299 route, I think the best value for the price would be Asus WS X299 SAGE, the one without 10G Lan... I would have bought it, but they stopped selling it about a week before I pulled the trigger.
The one I bought is still the same board but with the added 10G, which I don't like as I have no use for it and it raised the price for some 200 euros...
Probably never going to need 7 PCI slots anymore, but it's nice to know they are there to offer expandability, or at least optional locations for any cards one does install.
...nice MB but a little out of my price range as I am on a fixed retirement income.
The one I was looking at was the Asus Prime X299-A II ATX LGA2066 Motherboard which supported up to 256 GB (for future expansion) in 4 channel mode which is half the price of the X299 Sage. Also, using the list in the link, I checked out a few other CPU options and the 12 core/24 thread 7920X (499$ at Amazon) seems to be a pretty good fit True the base clock is a bit slower (2.9 GHz) but turbo mode is 4.3 GHz hwoever that would not have much an effect on Iray GPU rendering (though 24 threads would be sweet in Carrara and 3DL). With the 64 GB of DDR4 2666 memory I posted above that comes to 1,190$ for the three main components.
Have you checked that the Prime X299-A II (the "II" raised flags) does still support W7?
I have found "II" versions of the Sage also, but as far as I know, they don't support W7 anymore.
The Sage is found on this compatibility list;
https://www.asus.com/event/Server/OS_support_list/OS.html
I've been on EVGA's waiting list since Sep 2020 for every product and all I ever have gotten were the initial signup acknowledgements and a slew of emails some months later stating they have not 'forgot' about me and then some months later from that another slew of email stating the products I signed up for notifications for in Sep 2020 were no longer on offer from EVGA. No notifications of actual availibilty ever. Nevertheless, I signed up on the EVGA site once again and well as at BestBuy.com smartphone app for every RTX 3000s series video card on offer that was $999 or less. I'd of course like to see a reasonable priced RTX 3000 series video card much nearer the MSRP prices be on offer at those places but it's been an actual entire calendar year now.
If I want to grossly overpay there is no shortage, at all, of overpriced LHR RTX 3000 series cards that can't be used by cryptominers very well; so it's evident the problem isn't with the crytominers buying but middlemen buying and hoarding cards to resell at ridiculous markups to home consumers or businesses with government contracts (that would be mostly the middlemen businesses hoarding and making the ridiculous markups wouldn't it though?), I'm not sure which, but someone is buying frequently enough or those middlemen businesses wouldn't continue to hoard those cards. And that they can hoard those cards points to a completely broken distribution system in use by these big corporate businesses. Hardly any of those cards are going to cryptominers anymore. In any event, this month, Sep 2021, almost 100% of the various covid-19 stimulus payments to businesses, NGOs, and the general public are drying out and ending so I think we will see a return to more normal video card pricing when they actually have to sell inventory for their organization to earn income.
For your monitor issue, Personally, I use a 43' 4K TV as my monitor and I use it for both rendering and gaming, and I have never had problems with it and I have been using it for 5 or 6 years now I think. I know some people say that they want a faster refresh rate, but I have never had issues with it even gaming, and I play World of Tanks and Warthunder myself. (Not to mention that 3060 should be able to handle 4K since my 2060 super can)
...I would think if an MB accepted a CPU that supported W7 there shouldn't be an issue. The Sage is just way out of my budget range even at Newegg.
The only X299 on the list that is indicated as W7 compatible besides the Sage model is the WS X299 Pro which is still on the high end pricewise at 535$. It would be helpful if OS compatibility were mentioned up front such as in the MB's description or specs as it would be bad to drop several hundred on a MB that supports a CPU compatible with an older version of Windows only to find after everything's all set up, it doesn't work because of the OS used.
Seems the only option would be going back to a discontinued model like the X299-A but unfortunately those are hard to find new (usually refurbished) and usually shipping from Hong Kong or China. Not going to go that route and risk getting an inferior knockoff.
Hey guys! Got my PC and here is my render
