I used two terrains, one from the Terrain Stacking set and the other is a Bryce random terrain. Lighting is from an Hdri from the Exotic Hdri for Fantasy Skies and Sci-fi. Both products are available at Bryce-tutorials.info, the Galaxy from the Space Construction Kit, the trees are freebies and the moon is the one Dave Savage shared with us.
Thank you all for the comments.
Spuddy - You keep amazing me with your renders. Your apocalyptic mess is erm...I wanted to say very nice but well.. it really gave me a sad feeling. Mind you, that in itself is the point of a good render, to give a sense of wonder, joy, inspiration or -in this case- sadness. (which, I think, is far more difficult thing to do)
adbc - Nice to see you doing 32-9 renders. I like those! The "in-built- gradient from the sunlight is a very nice touch. Well done. it would make a nice postcard: "Wish you were here".
Horo - Yup, you nailed it again. At first I thought the snow was sand and I was amazed by your dune/beach render and the path leading to the beach coming from the dunes..I would love to see this one with the snow a bit more 'sandy' and some vegetation to go with it. Very realistic!
Mermaid - That render has a mysterious mood and the lighting is very good.
---
Well, I think I shall leave the crew of the Erasmus alone for a bit.
Time to take off into space with some renders more or less inspired by works of Jack Vance, one of my favorite writers.

From "The galactic handbook":
The main attraction of Alystor are the sugarbushes located in the southern half of the continent of Mistraal, famous for their vibrant colours and taste and considered a delicacy in the entire Gaean Reach.
Harvested for export by a specialist guild of harvesters -both male and female- with high local status, "the foundation of modest harvesters".
This is a high risk occupation because of the 'Feraign'.
Feraign are an metalic-geletinous indiginous lifeform, symbiotic protectors of sugarbushes and quite difficult if not impossible to deal with even with modern weapons.
Mortality among the modest harvesters is very high but so is the reward for bringing in a manload of sugarbushleaves.
A Feraign will always follow a modest harvester who plucked one of its bushes untill it or the modest harvester and his or her family are dead even if it means crossing the entire continent.
How the Feraign know where to go to follow the harvesters or how they recognize the harvesters immediate family is still unknown.
Sometimes, leaving the planet is the only option left for a harvester family.
Guided tours to the sugarbushes are available but tourists are warned that these tours are not without danger!
The only thing of note in this render is the way to get moons/planets just right with a cloudy atmosphere.
A small trick is to place the planet far back, make it "fuzzy" and cranck up the "transparency" so the clouds seem to cover the planet.
Sometimes you need to fiddle a bit with "specularity".
mermaid - very nicely done. I looks as if the tree is about to eat the moon. The sky also came out beautifullly.
Rembrandt - thank you. Nice story, as long as one isn't a target of a Feraign.
Planets: showing a planet in day light, use a simple texture for Transparency on a sphere as the example shows. The clouds show through the transparent part. For a planet in the night sky, this doesn't work, because the stars shine through the transparent part but it should stay black. Here you can use such a texture to control diffusion.
The object was made in Structure Synth v.1.5.0. It is 40% transparent, receives neither light nor shadows, not even self shadows. In the background an HDRI. In front of the camera is the GWL but hidden, if it is removed, the object is just half transparent, no brightness and no shadow spirals. Incomprehensible result.
Horo - Good tip, thank you for that! Very clean render that last one. I looked into "Structure Synth" and it looks like a fun little piece of software.I'll have to go and play with it. (well, sometime)

From "The galactic Handbook"
..and tourists can take a short trip to the planetoid to look at -and speculate over the origins of- this wellknown anomaly.
Daytrips to this nameless planetoid can be booked at Folanders inn.
The planetoid itself is in far orbit of Tubald, a red dwarf sun.
There are many speculations on how this object came to rest on the planetoid.
Kerrel Difin, dean of the Folderos university on Trigol has extensively written many papers about the anomaly and has established its origins on old Earth.
This claim however is widely disputed by many scholars and the mysteries surrounding this object continue to this day.
Note: The planetoid has been declared protected heritage and the object can only be viewed from a distance.
This was just a bit of fun to make. The Tesla is a freebie.
mermaid : beautiful render, the sky is awesome, looks like the tree is going to grab the moon or eat it (as Horo said).
Rembrandt : thank you. Both your renders are outstanding, great stories.
Horo : Great abstract, cool result. Thanks for explaining how to do it.
Rembrandt - thank you. Cool sci-fi scene with the Tesla.
adbc - thank you.
The terrain was self made, the material from High Resolution Terrains 1 a bit modified. The visible sun is from the Space Construction Kit. Sky and ambient light by the unpublished Gasclouds_B09 HDRI. All life on this world disappeared a long time ago when all those CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections) started. The sun will also die soon, just a couple of Millions of years are left for it.
mermaid010...Great render.I like the way the tree looks like it is about to pinch the planet
Rembrandt..Thanks for the lovely comments
Nice stories I like both your renders but not sure about the plantets in the first one ,I prefer the second one
Horo....Lovely structure and a very nice terrain in you second post
Bit of a fantasy space type one.Self made terrain and textured to suit
Bit of a fantasy space type one.Self made terrain and textured to suit
as last one but new material on the background terrain
spuddy - thank you. The seven variation all look great. Difficult which one I like best ... probably the second.
Actually, I started with this scene but then the sun erupted and ruined the world, so I tried to recreate it as it was in the past.
Horo : beautiful terrain and material in both renders, the skies on both images are awesome.
spuddy : the seven pictures look great, I like the first one most. Nice work.
Horo thanks I like the texture on the last one lovely sky as well
changed things again was not happy with the back terrain being too horizontal altered the lighting look as well
adbc Thanks I only did several to see what materials would work with the terrains I drew and which wouldn't
sorry messed up the upload
Rembrandt – thanks, all your renders are magnificent with nice story
Horo – thanks, the Structure Synth object is very nicely lit, both the terrain renders are excellent the skies and materials awesome.
Adbc – thanks
Spuddy – thanks, all versions of your renders are very nicely done, the materials and lighting are prefect. The last upload looks distorted.
The terrain and materials from the Grand Mountains, the sky from Landscapes under Fantastic Skies, the galaxy from Space Construction Kit and the alien flowers were done in Wings 3D or a freebie, I'm not sure.
mermaid : very beautiful render, the sky and the alien flowers are awesome.
A scene with an old frigate model from renderosity (I think).
adbc - thank you. Well done render with the frigate in this calm water. The sky is awesome.
spuddy - thank you. You can always edit your post and adjust the image size. Since it is obviously wider than 800, the aspect ratio got wrong as is obvious in the egg-shaped planet. Otherwise, nice variation.
mermaid - thank you. Very nice render, the sky with the galaxy and the plants makes it look a bit like a painting.
Thank you all for the comments.
Horo - first render, I very much like the slick rock material. Your seccond render is a beauty and yup a dying sun can ruin your entire day.
Spuddy - I am envious of your knowledge of terrains and textures, the all look very good and so realistic! Number 4 is my favorite.
Mermaid - That render has a lot of depth to it, very well done indeed!
adbc - What an explosion of colours, love it! That render almost sends sparkles from my screen.

From "The galactic Handbook"
Folanders inn on Daghout (also known for its peculiair moons) is known throughout the entire Gaean Reach as starting point for travels in the Beyonder region.(also known as "the Beyond")
The Beyonder region is part of the Gaean reach but the starsystems it contains are not patrolled by Dominion police or navy.
Anyone who wishes to do so may claim any -or even all if so inclined- planet that he or she deems suitable for their needs.
Keeping that claim however is not always guaranteed.
Many, willing to take risks or to try out new methods, ideas, or experiences seek refuge in the Beyond.
Thought of as a lawless region this is however not the case since most inhabited planets will have their own form of local law keeping.
The laws that are being kept however can take strange forms:
Wearing clothing with the colour blue on the planet T'kanish will result a long sentence in a hardlabour camp.
Pointing a finger towards a tree is a death sentence on Klat and whistling is punishable by the forced eating of nothing else than Mikta -an extremely bitter vegetable- for a month.
On Dakthar, stealing is not punishable -and is indeed encouraged- but swearing will result in a prison sentence. Hence the saying "As polite as a Dakthar thief".
Folanders inn can cater to any and all needs of adventurous travelers who wish to explore the Beyond or who seek permanent settlement.
From clothing, antidotes, weapons and food to hiring local guides or a small army, landing permits or charts, Folanders inn has it all.
The rooms are clean if somewhat sober and the food is simple old Earth style but nourishing. Weapons are not allowed inside the inn, this rule is very strictly maintained.
At last I found a material that suits my need for nice snowy mountains at sharecg.com
All models in this render are freebies from free3d.com
edit: The inevitable typo
Rembrandt - thank you. Very nice winter mountain scene. Nice story, too. I envy you how you find "strange" names like Dakthar or T'kanish. My biggest problem is always finding a name for a render.
Horo, Rembrandt : thank you.
Rembrandt : I love your stories as well as you last winter snow render. Great job.
Adbc -thanks, your render is very stunning, love the sky
Horo - thanks
Rembrandt - thanks, superb winter scene with a lovely story
mermaid : thank you.
Thank you all for the comments.
Horo - I take far too much time inventing those names but it's just a fun thing to do. Some just 'click the right button' others don't and they end up in def 0 (the dustbin).

From "The galactic Handbook"
Planet Dagobert was initially discovered by locator Carl Pystorius, a Formalhaut priest of the knife.
Carl lost the deed to the planet in a cardgame to Mikat Nemmig, chairman of the Earth Naturalist Society who donated the deed to said society.
After a cursory scouting of the planet itself the society decided to found three settlements.
All settlers consisted of members of the society and their families.
In the first three weeks after landing two settlements were overrun by large ferocious predatory animals, -which the settlers named Bloodddragons- with an uncanny talent for adapting to the environment.
The third settlement came close to being wiped out but those settlers decided to forget their principles of non-interference in nature and succeeded in establishing a more permanent base on the small island of Verdas, close to the main continent of Mikat (named after the chairman who was killed in a blooddragon attack on the second day after landing)
After no more than four generations the naturalist principles were all but forgotten and fending off blooddragons and other predators had become a priority.
The settlers first hired hunters in an attempt to exterminate the blooddragons -which failed miserably- but they soon realized that hunting bloodddragons could be a dangerous but lucrative tourist attraction.
Now almost all planetary income depends on tourist hunting parties looking for a thrill.
Obtaining hunting licences, hiring local guides, copters, booking hunting lodges and buying specialized hunting equipment and export licences for hunting trophies provide a high income and the local economy is specialised and based upon that.
Accidents, deadly or otherwise occur frequently but only seem to add to the attraction of hunting blooddragons.
Tourists should never expect to pay the price listed for services or goods.
If you order a meal in an inn there will be surcharges for the use of cutlery, listening to the background music, use of the restroom, conversation with the waiter, cleaning of napkins, etc. etc.
The same goes for aquiring goods where surcharges must be paid for advice, packaging, handling of items, administration cost, listening to in-store music, etc. etc.
Always negotiate in advance and clearly agree on the price beforehand or the unsuspecting tourist will find that any article or service will cost much more than first thought.
Not much to tell about this render. The mountains are homemade as are the trees with materials from "ground textures and tiled terrain".
Remember those desktop wallpapers that came standard with older Windowws versions?
Here is the Bryce version of those. (look for the little birdie)
It's called "Good morning!"
I had to millimeter the cloud slab into place for this one. Bit too high, fog everywhere. Bit too low, clear skies.
Rembrandt - two outstanding renders, I like the vegetation in the 1st render; the birdie sits on the top of the tree and the clouds look nice in the 2nd.
Mermaid - Not really good at hiding, that little bird.
From "The galactic Handbook"
Pernelle, the estranged daughter of merchant prince Henri de Lyon of Grethy 4, discovered the planet Bourgignon in 1473 after taking off in his Farganger mark VI spaceyacht after an argument with her father where she made clear she didn't want to follow in his footsteps in the family businesss.
After landing, the onboard instruments gave the all clear for breathable atmosphere, comfortable temperature, pressure and gravity.
However, after removing her helmet, she soon fell prey to the strange influence of the pollen from pufpufferbushes a substance not taken into account by the onboard instruments.
For three days she wandered around the gentle hills, hallucinating, in a state of total bliss.
When she came back to her senses, she immediately set off and registered the deed to the planet to her name.
With a consortium of her friends she financed the building of several hostels and advertised them as the ultimate form of relaxation and healing for the mentally and physically tired modern human being.
The undertaking was a huge succes and soon the consortium had more money than it knew what to do with.
Pernelle's clever investments over the years made the consortium the largest trading power in the Gaean Reach, as it still is today.
In 1489 Pernelle de Lyon became owner of her fathers company after a hostile takeover.
Bourgignon is still a very populair destination for tourists from the entire Gaean Reach.
Tourists can find accomodation in a large number of hostels, inns, lodges or even great houses or castles.
Usually a guest checks in and is given a room of which the windows can be opened.
Discreet staff will take care of the guest and make sure that he or she does not leave the room while under the influence of the pollen.
The effect of the pollen is described as euphorical, hallucinatory, mind altering and, in a great many cases, beneficial to troubled persons.
After about three standard Earth days, the effect slowly wears off and guests will be immune to the effect for about 14 days.
Many tourists book lodging for a few weeks or even months at a time.
Permanent settlement or landing on the planet outside of the landing facilities is strictly prohibited.
---
Just had to look for another use of that cloudslab and decided to promote it to pollen.
After that, the story wrote itself.
The hostel is a freebie as are the two flying Whatyoumaycallits and the spacecraft. (a Farganger mark VI spacecraft with extra cupholders)
Edit: yup, that typo agaan..agian...again.
Rembrandt - another outstanding render. I love how you use the cloudslabs in your renders, nice destination away from the maddening crowd.
Rembrandt : three outstanding renders, beautiful clouds and materials, I love the last one it's such a peaceful place waiting for more visitors.
Rembrandt - nice story from the galactic handbook about the blooddragons and the image as well.
The bird on the tree looks good. Well done fog, it's not always easy to get it right.
Again a nice story with the pollen and a nicely done render.
The Bent Helix object is from Hyper Textures Base, it creates negative shadows and it is within a cylinder. Lit by an HDRI also from Hyper Textures Base. If IBL Quality is more than 16, there are much more shadows that clutter the image.
The same object but another HDRI and in front of the camera the EWL (extreme wide angle lens) from Lenses and Filters. It shows a wider range of inverted shadows but lacks a bit of contrast.
Horo - both the abstracts of fantastic the 1st has more contrast, I like the pastel colors of the 2nd
Thanks everybody
mermaid010 smashing colourful render great sky
adbc very striking scene love the refections
Rembrandt Your last comment made me smile the truth is I have a very scant knowledge of terrains and textures esp compared to say Horo and well everyone else in fact. What I do have is the persistance to hammer Bryce into giving me the effect I want mostly in unconventional ways......I thank you for your kind comments and for looking
I really like all your stories and great renders that you put with them ... keep them coming
Horo super abstracted objects I like the way the shadows dance
Another one I'm afraid still experimenting and practicing with self drawn terrains and addind suitable materials also placement of objects hence the object overload
