But that Turbo 12 cylinder GPU comes free on a purchase of the new Nvidia private nuclear power plant (exclusively for your garden or backyard).

I suspect we're getting the main release version of the current beta of DS4 and the first beta release of DS5, with the latter coming just before Christmas.

I'll be curious to see what the DS5 user interface looks like.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

That "new plugin types" scares me a little bit. Is that related to the change in programming language I vaguely saw in the forum a while ago, which is supposed to make some PA script products no longer functional?
  • Hmm Plugin types?? One springs to mind and that is DEX ?? a plugin that was being developed for Maya a while back and was i believe bought by Daz ??  So perhaps it is along those lines that any new plugins that come with the major update? will be geared to bring more  compatibility  with other rendering software through I hope more robust bridges than we have now

One Major gripe I had seems to have been fixed and that is seam lines when rendering in Spectral Which is a real bonus for me at least

So I am hoping like many that what we lose through the loss of backward capability is far more outweighed by the newer version of Daz ? Who knows that the plugins that we fear lost could be an integral part of the new Daz 5 but I would not want to bet on it

I don't know what they consider to be an exciting update. Maybe it actually will be. But I think they should focus their efforts making the software easier to use. I don't like typing the first letter of an item in a list, only to find out that rather than quickly selecting that item, the keypress has moved everything in the scene.

You can turn keyboard navigation off, through Edit>View. Not the same issue, but I was told that the tendency of the filter fields to lose focus (which had the same net result if keyboard navigation was on) was a Qt limititation so we may hope that DS 5, with a newer version of Qt, will allow both issues to be addressed.

I don't like how, if DAZ Studio is set to load some scene other than the reguar default, it prompts you so save on exit even though nothing changed. And they really should try to see how many things they can make multithreaded. It's not pleasant to have to wait for DAZ Studio to finish something and see that only 25% of your CPU is being used.

What makes you think they haven't? Things may be single-threaded because they need to be.

Another thing they should do, that is probably simple, is have a setting to change the thread priority to lower than normal at startup, so when DAZ Studio starts rendering with the CPU it doesn't kill the whole computer.

Render Settings pane, Advanced tab, lets you set the CPU Load Limit (number of cores) to be used.

  • I can't speak to other things they might have in the works, but I can say the new Iray features (centered around VDB files) are game changers. Before you judge what is soon going to be possible you might want to check out the Iray Developers Blog: https://blog.irayrender.com/

Fog and cloud effects are going be exponetially better, but this will also be great for similar special effects like fire.

  • Will there be iray motion blur coming, too?

Who knows. According to the release notes it already has been supported in DAZ Studio for quite some time. However, I've never seen anybody admit to finding a way to access the feature. I suspect the UI for it is still in the works for some reason.

Whoa, I just saw the ground fog thing in the link and that would be amazing to have as an easier option! Thanks for sharing this.

As for motion blur, that would be pretty cool as I like that feature in Blender, but with Daz I just plop the clip into after effects and apply pixel motion blur and you can tweak it to how much you want and it's very effective.

I believe the only "Mac-only" feature mentioned as coming in DAZ Studio is Filament (they said that they did have it working back when they announced the Pre-Beta); they mentioned that they were working on making DAZ Stadio m1-native, but its success is not a given at this point, as far as I know (but I'm hopeful).

They did tell us that we would lose some plug-ins, but I assume that most would probably be updated. Yes, it's sad if we lose some we count on, but that's been ongoing since day one, really, as some developers stop supporting the product for one reason or another. I believe that in a year or two we'll be mourning a favourite plug-in or two, but celebrating ones that were updated or new ones that become new favourites. It's evolution in action.

As to "big changes", there's always a chance that they'll update 3Delight, or hopefully at least keep it going, but my hopes are that they'll add a rendering engine or two; my first choices would be Cycles and Evee; for anyone porting their characters to Blender, being able to set up character textures and shaders in DAZ Studio and have them move into Blender without any need for adjustment would be too cool.

Yeah, doing the motion blur in post is often a better use of time, since rendered motion blur is render time intensive and, by nature, baked-into the image (which means you lose flexibility). To facilitate doing better motion blur in post-production Iray supports a "Motion Vector" canvas, which the DAZ Studio release notes also says is currently supported -- However, I can't find any way to access that canvas type yet.

I thought companies had learned by now to NEVER make major updates/releases just before holidays, when support/tech personell that will be needed to fix every bug and error the public finds are away.

...hope they also have a Mr.Fusion™ version for those of us living in apartments.

...and the "perennial" question, will it run Crysis in 8K at 240 FPS?

If we're throwing out wishful thinking features, how about auto-fitting older Genesis footwear to newer generations. Seriously, I am excited to see what's next feature-wise.

When I was in tech support I would always volunteer for those holiday cover stints. Mostly got increased rates for working holidays and there were hardly any support calls.

Last I heard, AM was working on a house cat, and frankly, any house cat he would make would be a hundred times better than anything I'd expect from Daz (if Dog 8 is any indication). However, AM is only one person and I have no idea where the kitty is in his workflow, so it may be his next release or the 12th release from now. LOL

  • I'm going to wait and see, but I am not expecting much... been burned before like when Daz said "Something Big is Coming" and I was thinking it was working IK, but it turned out to be just a new figure I was completely uninterested in. Daz's interpretation of what is "Big" might be a little off.

Yeah, when I saw this announcement, I thought, "Is it IK? No? Alright, I'll be back for 5.1 then."

...I was hoping it would be DNI (Direct Neural Interface) so I could just "plug in" and to create characters and scenes without the need for a mouse, trackball, or keyboard..

I suppose these official teasers are designed to generate interest. But they end up just generating wild speculation and unfulfilled wish-lists. I've seen more threads closed down due to "speculation" than I've had hot dinners. "Unfortunately this thread has drifted into unsupported speculation so it has been closed." but here we have one that does just that. I'd much prefer they just dump it on us and say "here it is folks".

that is only a created problem, personally I have no issues with people making suggestions or speculating but it is not my forum

  • I'm sure whatever Daz/Tafi comes up with will be welcome by most users, but it's hard for me to get very excited about it. Both my laptop and project build tower are older Mac systems, and I can't justify the expense of chasing the latest technology, cards, and RAM chips just so I can use the latest Studio version in full.

It'll probably be an NFT-powered Crypto renderer.

It's also a created problem because Daz3D utterly refuse to provide a roadmap for their program that depends on people being excited and invested in it so that they will continue to purchase assets.
