Another attempt with some filtering, getting happier with the results:

(less speckle nonsense, too)
looks best for me
some more colour and it seems like a Moebius style
tell your settings please
All I'm doing is flattening the color on one layer to provide color and not luminosity (Curves, set to flat).
Then on a second layer use 'ink sketch' and tweak it until I get a good sketchy look, and set the layer to multiply.
What I'm shooting for is having lighting defined by ink-like shading over a mostly flat coloring.
After flattening the image, I might use Levels to spruce up the final image. Although I'm debating...
This was the May image before I tweaked levels: http://willbear.deviantart.com/art/Third-of-May-536079711
This was the one I just posted, with levels tweaked: http://willbear.deviantart.com/art/Third-of-May2-536080217
The tweaked one is brighter and more vivid... but the untweaked one looks a little more like something in a graphic novel. Hmm.
The "third set" I meant was the baptismal font image.
