All files in my Content Library Categories have disappeared.
I had taken PAINSTAKINGLY METICULOUS AND WELL-ORGANIZED files to help me utilize Daz Products. All that work.... years of Organization is gone.
How can I get it back?

Can you see any files with a file explorer outside of Studio? If everything is there, check your mapped folders in Content Directory Manager. More to follow depending on that answer...
Did you change anything when this happened ? as said, check that your files are there (DS would not remove them though), but the drive can go bad or something else.
Do you see all the categories in the tree and they are all empty or are the categories gone also in the tree pane ? check that nothing happend to the configuratyion so it point to wrong folder or something, once again this almost never happen by itself (unless your drive is history), so make sure you did not do something that could cause the problem.
Check the log file and see if there is anything there.
checking the mapped folders was my first thought, too.

Not that I can remember. I thought I was updating metadata for a few of the items.

The files are there, just the Categories section has nothing in it.

Yes the categories are all there, just the files missing from them.

How do I correct that?
Check the log file and see if there is anything there.
Thank you. But what am I looking for?
On W10? Once in awhile it has trouble reading itself and this would flow over to the programs then. Solution is to try a reboot.
UPDATE!
Files are not showing in Products directory either although they ARE showing in Daz Studio Formats folder, Poser formats folder, and Other formats folder.
INSANITY! *cry*
Do they have any metadata tags in the Content Library>Daz Studio Formats list (e.g. the tags like Material or Actor)?
Have you backed up your database, or exported user data? Or are these actually set up as new products, in which case they will have been exported when you created them.
No. I think I did just update CMS but wasn't that supposed to solve issues with metadata?
No backup or export.
Also something else I found odd. It's not showing thrid party stuff I installed manually either.
Okay, let's not overlook the obvious. Is CMS running? Sounds like there is no metadata.

When you say you updated CMS, what do you mean, exactly? You mentioned updating metadata for a few items, was that it?

Heartbeat resuming...
I tried stopping and then starting CMS, but it did not come back. All metadata missing, no categories, no products. Restart Studio, no change. "Invalid CMS Connection..." Sound familiar? I have been using 4.20.0.17 beta for a while, no problems. Luckily, I guess, I still had General Release 4.12.1.118 installed, and it picked up right away. Back to 4.20.0.17 beta, and CMS worked. So, that begs the question, why would it not resume by itself? As a rule, I don't think I have ever stopped the CMS, and it worked from the start when I installed the Studio beta version the first time.
ETA: Then DIM dropped the CMS connection when I tried to use it. Maybe both need to be stopped before restarting?
Ideas:
Edit > Preferences > CMS settings ... cluster directory ... C:/Users/.../AppData/Roaming/DAZ 3D/cms
https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files#prod_18869 Manually download/install the one for the OS [.exe for W, .zip for Mac]
While I don't recall ever using it, I thought there was someplace in D/S to turn on/off CMS.
It's all back to normal for me. The Start/Stop CMS commands are on, at least, the Content Library and Smart Content tabs' context menu ("hamburger" or right-click).
[Mod note - this is the old Valentina database, and has not been used by Daz Studio since version 4.9]
...try this:
Open Windows Task Manger and go to the Services Tab. There should be an entry labelled DAZContentManagement. Check the Status to see if it is "Running" or "Stopped". If it says "Sopped" right click o it which will show a drop down menu that has three options "Start Service", "Stop Service" "Go to Process". Click "Start Service".
Before this I would shut down the Daz programme and restart it afterwards.
*****Note" I am on Windows 7 so not sure how Windows 10 displays this information*****
I've had similar happen before and had to do this.
Also, was there a Windows Update just before this?
Now it no longer shows Categoeries or Products at all.
I did this and now what is the next step?
While I don't recall ever using it, I thought there was someplace in D/S to turn on/off CMS.
This is all new to me. And now I've lost the Categories and Products altogether.
As a matter of fact, yes.
What is the file name that I am supposed to point CMS to?
Not the folder name but the name in the folder.
You just point to the folder. You had metadata before, so you had a working CMS installation previously. Not sure what installing it again will do to the data.
...was everything OK before the update?
Yes, I believe so... but now I've pointed CMS setting elsewhere and I don't know where I had it before.
What is the right direction? Where do I find it?
If I point it back in the right direction, what do I do then?
The concept of pointing to a folder, is to point the correct folder in the first place. If your CMS wasn't located to the same place ... I don't know where you put it. Mine was a default location. Maybe under another user account?
At any rate, if/when all else fails, could be it's time to reinstall the program. Use the Control Panel to uninstall it and the Postgre. Installing D/S should also be installing another Postgre. [I think if you installed it with DIM, you might have to uninstall with DIM too. I install programs manually.]
And yikes, YES, Windows' Updates have changed how other programs are working too :-( And they made the changes withOUT notifying that any changes were being made too.
Okay.... removed DAZ Studio.and PostgreSQL CMS and then reinstalled.
No luck.
I tried going to services but there is no mention of PostgreSQL CMS under Services in the Task Manager.
I am really lost
Even if I have to redo all the work again, I just want to get it back to listing directories and allowing me to rebuild my Categories. *CRY*
Use Categories exclusively myself. So totally get your setup.
Below is a screengrab of taskmamanger showing small clip of process name that should auto show when you have DAZ Studio up and running.
Have you tried installing the 2nd DAZ Studio, like Northof45 wrote above?
You would have to buy Beta (free), and install. His one experience showed CMS was perma-off, until he ran 2nd DS. Then in his later post, added that an on-of switch under the content tab as he writes. But maybe that doesn't work 100%? Running another DS install would be probably a good option. PostgreSQL Server running again is key IMO.
HUZZAH!!! PROBLEM SOLVED!
If thias happens to you, first make asure that ALL Windows updates have completed. Then check your cirectory.
If that doesn't work, then reinstall both DAZ and PostgreCMS.
I AM SO HAPPY IT'S ALL BACK! ALL RECOVERED!
As I asked above, were these actually set up as new products? Have you backed up either your database (with DS, DIM, Daz Central, and carrara closed) or exported userdata? Products are written to the /Runtime/Support/ folder automatically, user data (not set up as a new/edited product) is exported on demand, either can be reimported.
