First of all, I think Daz really misses Rarestone right now. She would have been the go to for an "anime" character as she made Sakura. So with Rarestone gone, who takes her place? To me, this shows how vital Rarestone was and how hard it is going to be to replace her style.
It would have made better sense to simply say Kiri is a stylized character and avoid the entire anime topic all together. Let the user decide if Kiri is anime enough for them, whatever that means. I think Kiri has more in common with The Girl than anime. Did they ever claim The Girl was anime?
Did anyone get the dark makeup thing? I'm trying it out right now and it's showing up in my library as a script instead of a material or L.I.E. preset. I click the script for apply all and only the lips change, I can't get the eye shadow to turn on. I can get the half face purple thing to work, but that wasn't at all what I was planning on using so that does me no good. Is this happening to anyone else?
I'm still trying to decide about Kiri but that's exactly what's happening to me now with the Julia makeup. None of the scripts work and when I tried to add LIE manually, the eyeliner was wonky. I have to see if it's the same PA.
Okay, thanks for letting me know that you're running into the same issue with a different character's makeup. I'm just going to return it then and that'll be it on getting these things. Appreciate it!
You're right - Kiri 9 looks a lot like Kiko 8.1 (I didn't like her, too).
Here's a picture with the Kiri 9 Dark Alternate character, dark makeup 04, Queen Isadora Hair and the Cyberpunk Outfit for Genesis 8. The scene is XI Anime Street and it renders easily.
Anime 1 | Daz 3D
While similar, Kiko was much better and had an amazing bundle (and it was a great deal if I remember correctly). Most issues with Kiri come from how poor the G9 base is compared to G8 to my eyes. And I don't know who does the promos showcasing expressions, but every one of them was terrible for the last few core females (and played a big part on my choice not to buy the last two)
I think some of the lukewarm reception comes from tying the discounts to bundles only and the bundles being kind of meh... The only things I found interesting in those, were the two hairs and the Anime City Street
The current Kiri bundles strike me as a mish-mash of four distinct styles: Kiri (more-or-less Kiko 9 minus the fox stuff), Qan, Isadora, and Dark Alt. I can imagine whimsical one-offs where they could be used together as-is (for cutesy or comical effect highlighting their differences in appearance), but in general, I feel as if these characters would seldom be placed in the same scenes or stories. "Discordant" is a word that comes to mind looking at the Kiri bundles.
While its true there are a lot of anime styles, Kiri resembles exactly none of them.
It's an easy fix. The PA who uploaded her just has to remove "Anime-" from the description and it's good.
In the surfaces tab at the head of Kiri 8 there is a switch "Makeup Enable", which is set to "On" after applying the makeup. Switching this off and on again did the trick for me. Maybe this is a bug in DAZ studio (4.21.1.48 beta for me), not a problem with the makeup itself.
Ah, it worked! Thank you so very much for the tip! Personally I don't see the point in having a button to enable makeup since you have to actively apply it, chalk it up to the mysteries I'm seeing of G9 that is making me sigh in disatisfaction, but at least I can use it now. I'm running 4.20.1.78 Pro Edition Public Build, so it must be an all around bug since it's different versions of Daz. Now I'm happy, I think she looks wonderful as a character and will dial in very nicely for things I'm working on. Thanks!
I do like the Dark Shape add-on

Not anime, but something I can work with (I don't think I tried much anime after Aiko 3 except when trying new characters out, LOL)
I had to check because I wasn't sure, but it is this one https://www.daz3d.com/ch-futuristic-soldier-suit-for-genesis-8-81-and-9-females
(In the Heart of the Beast Alien for Genesis 9 Bundle )
Thank you. That looks like it.
I was skeptical about it being Yura, because Yura is very much about rounded edges and smooth shapes that follow the clothing. And patch pockets and knee pads. So many patch pockets and knee pads. The hard edges and straight lines on this didn't look like Yura to me.
I'm finding Kiri really weird. It's another character with the weird trend of being morphed directly on the neutral figure base, so you can't easily dial out the female shape unless you turn off or modify the limits and set 'feminine' to -100% (and I don't recommend it; I didn't do it here and just created a body with a bit of Young Anime Heroes instead, but if you dial out feminine from Kiri you get odd indentations in the pecs). While I think they were aiming for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake style, it's veered hard into the bug eyed Alita movie aesthetic which is very hard to get rid of. (I enjoyed the movie, but that look was certainly A Choice.) As a result, it's really hard to turn it into a convincing male character, so I really hope we get a male counterpart soon. Preferably with a better-thought-through bundle set.
(Every time I try to work with it, I get this Dreamcatcher song stuck in my head... It's only one letter off and it's extremely catchy.)

What's the point of G9 then, if the PAs aren't going to even bother utilizing it's main functionality properly?
Apologies for asking a stupid question: what defines a character as Anime?
Technically, the only thing that defines 'anime' is that of 'being animated.' You'll get as many answers as there are people. But in reality, there are so many different styles of anime that it makes it a bit hard to define.
These examples, for... uh, example, from left to right: Paranoia Agent, Trigun, Trigun Stampede, Di Gi Charat, Gunsmith Cats, Beastars, Final Fantasy: Advent Children and the infamously weirdly-proportioned xxxHolic. All technically anime. (I think the FFAC style is the one Kiri was kinda aiming for.) This isn't even half the styles I've seen either, there are a lot of styles out there, some weirder than others...
So not a stupid question, just... a weirdly complicated one.
There are certain facial shape conventions that a lot of different anime styles use, which are present in figures like Aiko/Hiro4, Hitomi/Hiro5 and Sakura8, Tahiza etc. But figures like Kiri use none of them. Kiri is stylized sure, but while anime tends to looks stylized, not all stylized looks are "anime".
For what it's worth, I agree that the artists didn't 100% achieve the anime aesthetic with Kiri.
But I also think DAZ' track record with anime is rather hit and miss, this is nothing new.
In my opinion they really nailed the aesthetic with Aiko 3 and Sakura 8.
Aiko 4 is a complete miss for me. A tiny mouth and huge eyes do not an anime character make. She looks like an alien.
All other core characters that are marketed as anime fall somewhere in between.
Whether or not I like the characters is a separate question all together.
I don't think Aiko 7 is a particularly successful attempt at anime, but I do like the character.
Kanade 8 looks anime to me, but I don't actually particularly like her. She's just not to my taste.
Don't really care about her default shape, but her skin sure is nice - it actually looks like skin in good condition of a real person and not like the usual overkill orange peel skin. With the dark alternative shape she actually looks like a character from a Pixar movie. Not the usual definition of anime though, which Sakura 8 almost perfectly nailed it. I think I might get her two shapes and two makeup add ons
ETA in some promos the corners of her mouth do look wonky.
That is funny. her skin looks like pixar, smooth photoshopped skin and unrealistic to me. I do agree with the orange overkill on lots of other DAZ skins though
Genesis 1 was such a boon for fans of anime characters. You had legacy morphs for Aiko/Hiro 3/4 and Hiro5 and Hitomi. Aiko 5 was kind of a misfire.
As far as Genesis 2, I really liked Aiko 6, because she looked like an anime woman, rather than a teenage girl.
Whoever made all those great figures is obviously no longer with the company.
Does applying the make-up from the add-on work for you? Or anyone else having problems with it, too?
It is working now. Sorry.
Does anyone know the hair that was used in the Kiri 9 HD Makeup Add-On? The short purple hair?
https://www.daz3d.com/kiri-9-hd-makeup-add-on
I dom't know for sure. Perhaps: https://www.daz3d.com/dforce-corporate-hair-for-genesis-8-male-and-females
Definitely a Daz Studio bug, it happens to all of my G9 characters with makeup using the makeup section of the materials - not the ones using a dedicated set of face textures for example. What also works is leaving iray preview mode for like texture shaded, then going in iray again. I guess the off/on makeup forces an iray refresh which is needed when applying the makeup..
