    I don't know if this helps but I have the installer for DS 1.7 downloaded on 7/23/2007, DS 1.0.1 was downloaded on 12/28/2005. So maybe it was actually DS 0.7.x that you were using prior to 2006 and not 1.7? If so then you might have started in early 2004 or maybe 2003?? I have the installer for DS 0.9.12.11 from 1/5/2005.

    Was there a 1.3 casue I kinda remember that before I got 1.7. I might be wrong tho cause it was so long ago and it does not show up in my orders.

    Started with Poser at about 20 years ago. Got Bryce and Carrara before they were aquired by Daz. Changed to Daz with V4/M4. Soon changed to Cinema 4D and used Daz as source for figures and objects. Even wrote some scripts in Daz and Cinema 4D to correct the axis and transfer additional information like JCMs. This didn't work for HD though. When Cinema 4D switched to a yearly license payment, I changed to Blender. Now Diffeomorphic is my transfer tool. By the way: My first order was Victoria 2.0 in 2002

    Feb of 2001! I have been doing this a very LONG LONG TIME! I also love seeing the other old timers chime in ;-)

    One of my very first renders in Bryce before there was ever a DAZ Studio.

    My orders tells me it was around 2004 but I think it was a little earlier than that, 2003 when I downloaded the DS beta and all the free content including V2 and M2....

  • Years ago, I used Poser. I tried the early versions of DS and wasn't impressed. Life took over for a few years, and when I came back to this hobby I didn't really want to spend the $$ to update to the latest Poser version, so I took a dive into DS. As I didn't have Poser bias this time around, I stuck with DS. That was about 3ish years ago...so much $$ spent on the store(s) since than...

    Another big reason that I stuck with DS this time is the relative lack of Poser figure content available. Daz made a good business decision by providing the software for free and creating a store with a lot of content.

    As to the store - I bought my first DAZ products on January 8, 2006, though I'd visited the site a few times before that due to ads included with Poser & Vue, so very late 2005 or the first week of 2006.  As for software... while I was buying content, I found DAZ Studio 1 & 2 to be pretty primative, so I used primarily Poser until the release of DS 3, then flipped back and forth between the two until the release of DS4, when Genesis swayed me over to using DS full time.

    The first account is from 2006, but I had previously used free copies found in magazines. I started with Bryce, then DAZ studio. I have always enjoyed using DAZ studio, but only in the last 3 years have I had enough time to dedicate.

    First public beta of DS was released in spring 2004, there was an alpha for PC members only in late 2003 though (for Christmas IIRC).

  • Was it always required to have a DAZ account to download DS? My account says my first purchase was in October 2004, which was when 0.9 was available, but I had downloaded it before that, and I'm pretty sure the first version I used was 0.8. Can anyone recall?

    They used to have put a lot of content out on promtional discs out that were included in magazines and even books, so it wouldn't have been hard to get items that way.

    that's actually how I found DAZ but found Evocia Carrara 5 first  on a Magazine disc

    had no idea DAZ even owned Carrara

    got D|S2 later on a disc with V,M,H,A3

    learned they were "Poser" figures too and Carrara could import them too which was cool

    upgraded later to D|S3 when found was free that's when I joined DAZ

    Thanks, I was wondering exactly when that was. Were they sending out marketing emails then?

    Despite my username... I've been doing 3D since Poser version 3.  So somewhere in the mid to late 90's.  Was a beta user of DAZ Studio and haven't looked back since.  Only more recently have I gotten serious about being a PA though.

    Yep!  I downloaded 1.3.1.0 on 7/22/2006.

    I'm not sure why I kept all these old versions/installers. But I'm glad I did, it makes an interesting trip down memory lane.

    Ah ha!  After frenzied digging, I found my old archives.  Yep, I still have a copy of DAZ Studio 0.8.16.1, an "Alpha" version.  The date on the ".exe" file is 1/22/2004..  I have vague memories of actually trying to install and run it a couple years ago.  Didn't go very well.  I think it ran, sort of, but was painful to watchindecision

    And according to my archive, version 0.9.0.0 was the first "Beta" version.  I have 37 Beta versions of DAZ Studio in my hoard.surprisefrown

    The first official release I have is version 1.0.  i.e. "PC_DAZStudio_1_0.exe" , dated 9/14/2005.

    If I remember correctly (a questionable assumption considering my age), the first reasonably useful and reliable version of DAZ Studio was version 1.4.yes

    I have no idea why I kept all those early versions.  But if life as a computer person taught me anything, it was to never delete software archives.  They just might be useful someday, if only to tell people you have them.indecision

    IIRC the early betas were made available through links in the forums, so they would not have appeared in your account. I think 0.8.x would have been the alpha for PC members as I remember the first beta as 0.9.x. I think I still have a copy of the installers on one of my backup drives laugh

    There was also a time where you could download DS from CNET and then get a serial number from DAZ site, but that was much later.

    Thanks, I was wondering exactly when that was. Were they sending out marketing emails then?

    I lost my mail archives of that time so I can't check, but I'm pretty sure there was at least a weekly newsletter. The forums had been introduced not that long before IIRC (I remember the email announcing them for some reason lol).

    IIRC Daz released the first version of the SDK with DS1.3, so yes 1.3 or 1.4 was when DS was starting to be considered "stable enough".

    Me too - found Bryce before Poser and then moved to Daz Studio. Started as a vendor at DAZ in 2002. :)

    I came so long ago, I ordered Vicky 2 and Mike 2 on CDs. I'd bought Poser 4, and Posette and the Dork were so bad, I had to hunt for Mike and Vicky. The Dork in particular was hideous. That was... Hell, I don't know when it was. 2002? I bought Poser 4 at Circuit City. 

    That was when I was a very young dinosaur, roaming the swamp.

I remember those days. .The one part I liked was that you could render in background after the scene was submitted to Lux instead of having to keep Daz open during the entire process which saved resources. You could also pause it shut down, restart the system and then resume rendering from that point on.  Wish that could be done with Iray. 

    But yeah "days" for rendering which on occasion turned into weeks for a big scene as it still was rendering on the CPU (and I had a slow 4 core at the time).

    I was a Reality/Lux user too - on an iMac. Another advantage was that I had an olde PC standing idle and it had a decent CPU so I had that running Luxrender on Linux and was able to network render across the two computers. Still not as quick as a GPU running IRay but better than waiting overnight for a single render.

    I did similar in those days with some Linux servers I had with enough RAM and a good enough CPU. Reality was the first add-on for Studio that I bought the moment I saw it. Didn't matter that it was $80. Physical light engine in Studio??!?! Gotta have. WIth a photography background, I understand physical light better than ray tracing. There's good reason I never did much with POV-Ray back in the 90's.

    I've been following Daz 3d since before V3, so contrary to what some have said - it really was Daz 3d when they started.

    I became a member of the store and the Platinum Club around 2009 according to my account. But it feels like it was earlier than that. However, back in the day we didn't have to become members to get freebies, which I started getting just before V3 came out.

    In 2009 or 2010 I became a PC member, bought a book called "Figures. Characters and Avatars", by Les Paredew, which came with Daz Studio 3.something (free version), Hexagon 2 and Carrara 6.5 Pro and also a bunch of free Daz 3d content. At the same time I bought the upgrade from Carrara 6.5 Pro to 7 Pro, which came with a free upgrade to Carrara 8 Pro once it comes out, and acces to the Carrara 8 Pro Beta test.

    Carrara 8 was the first Carrara that was 64 bit, so I installed the Beta and never went back.

     

    Of course Carrara users "know" that you cannot animate in Daz Studio, so I never really tried until just a couple years ago. They were right, to a point. But I've unlocked that door and have been having a Blast animating in Daz Studio ever since! Loving my Iray!

     

    Hey Original poster,

    It's a great plan to discover Genesis 2 and everything that works with it. 

     

    I still use a Lot of my older stuff from V3 and M3 and their families all the way up the chain. I have eventually purchased all of the various Clones to fit other generation's clothing and hair, etc., to other generations and love doing that! Rosie 8 (my super hero on the left) wears clothes from all generations between M3 and V3 through Genesis 9. All of them!

    In my animations, I use any and all generations for the other actors - whomever fits the bill on the day. Sometimes it's Michael 4. Other times I'll fill the scene with Genesis 1 figures. I use a Lot of Predatron's LoRez figure on a daily basis. Very cool kits that, once we own Loretta and Lorenzo, have a bazillion options! For example, LoRez MU Workers come complete as they are, but they can use all of the various shapes and textures from Loretta (Female MU Worker) and Lorenzo (Male). The same applies for All of the rest of the human Predatron LoRez series.

     

    When Carrara 8.5 was in public beta, I was overwhelmed with Genesis 1 and how Amazing that figure is. As it was new, I collected every monster, creature and animal pack they sold for it. Well, almost every one. I have a Lot of them! And I find them to be truly invaluable to this day! It's really quite easy for me to make them work with Iray.

    Even generations before that. I still use DzFire's Cyborg for M4 and he holds up well today - same goes for RawArt's amazing M4 creatures. 

     

    With Bone Minion, I collect even the oldest of animated pose files - and they are Excellent to work with! Since I began my journey before Genesis 1, I have all of GoFigure and Reisormocap's animation packs from that era and since. So animating all of these generations is as simple as having the right Bone Minion, so I buy them by the bundle! :)
