Wu Kong the monkey king

It's nice to see a non human 9 bundle. But do be careful if you plan to use this in a commercial project. As he is from another game that is coming out soon called Black Myth: Wukong. Even tho it has a interactive license so be careful. I would definitely love to see more non human genesis 9 from daz.

The Monkey King or Sun Wukong (simplified Chinese孙悟空traditional Chinese孫悟空pinyinSūn Wù Kōng) is a literary, and religious figure best known as one of the main players in the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West (traditional Chinese西遊記simplified Chinese西游记)

Yes, the myth of Wukong goes back a ways, but there is an upcoming game with a model that looks suspiciously similar to this one. It's possible, if not probable, that Daz just licensed the character for the Daz store.

I got an orange banner door the bundle, extra 50% off. I don't like the character, though - seems well done, not anything I care to buy

I asked if it's suppose to have an editorial license added to it. Just waiting on a reply to the wake-up call

I've seen plenty of Wukong representations in videogames and movies before that game was announced... this will obviously not need an Editorial license.

It's my understanding that no one could copyright it if they tried.
I believe the earliest depiction of Wukong are literally cave drawings

He isn't specifically from another game, it's a mythical character from Chinese folklore known as Sun Wukong, it would be akin to saying someone releasing Hercules is copyright because of the Disney movie. You've likely seen iterations of wukong in dragon ball known as goku and many other variations in media through the years

I own a Chinese comic book from the seventies, ‘Sun Wu Kong Defeats the White Bone Ghost Three Times’. The character of Sun Wu Kong has appeared in so many cartoons, comics and books; a licence for it would be ridiculous. Unless Daz had copied the design of one of these works 1:1, which would be highly unlikely.

Watch A Chinese Odyssey 1 and 2 from the 90's from Stephen Chow, I have the DVDs but I think they were available on Amazon Prime at one time. It's about the Monkey King and two of the best films. I don't think this is something they can slap that EL on, though if they end up doing it, I will not be buying the bundle. So I'm holding tight until tonight to see what happens.

There's many, many monkey characters that could easily get an EL slapped on them like Dr. Zaius (that first promo pic on his base character reminds me of him), so DAZ has gone with the character from old Chinese stories, that animes have gotten inspired by it.

I'm hoping to see his other companions too. There's already a pig guy made by a PA, so I'm not worried of the quartet doesn't get completed.

Also to add to the list... from Vainglory.

Sun Wukong also a champion in Raid Shadow Legends. It's safe to say that he's as un-trademarked and safe to use as Santa Claus.

I like the character and several items from the bundle, but I have hard time convincing myself that I need them, even with orange banner.

I would be interested if this character worked for G9 Feminine.  I know it will technically work, but what would it look like?  Has someone tried this yet?  Thanks!

PS. Thanks DAZ for adding the Starter Bundle to the Pro Bundle!  Now I don't have to wait for the special days to buy the Starters that I already have all of the products from!  :)

As I said in the sale-discussions thread, I bought the kit to fulfill a specific upcoming character need for a story and that character is NOT male. So I'll taking a risk that it'll work out. I won't have time until later today (got to attend to my day job, y'know) but later I will try a test render of a Monkey Queen and post it in the "render your buys" thread, so keep your eyes open.

There's a promo pic of Wukong mixed with Freja:

For the record, if you need a "monkey girl" character there's also this one for G8.1F: https://www.daz3d.com/vo-monkey-sister-hd-for-genesis-81-female-bundle

Monkeys have tails; primates do not have tails.  Where is Wukong's tail?

It is one heck of a coincidence though XD

I love it, the morph looks fanastic. The fact that Sun Wukong is also the direct inspiration for one of my favorite shows when I was younger makes me really want to buy the pro bundle but I'm really trying to figure out what I would do with this.

anyone who has the bundle, have you had any issues with the fur for the Macania outfit Jacket? Mine seems to move more than it should if I change my figure's proportions and with Wu Kong 9, the fur appears above his ears.

I just want to see if anyone else has the issue before I put in a ticket. If it's just me, then I'll wait to see if it persists after I redo my library

Both monkeys and humans are primates; so some but not all primates have tails.

That's a nice men's suit. Thanks, Mada! Pity about the tie knot, but I guess I can geo edit this one instead. Nice to see Arki branching out from her chosen genre.

Where're the gorilla and orangutan add-ons?

He's also in the same legend as Pigsy - https://www.daz3d.com/mk-pigsy-for-genesis-9. They (and another disciple) travelled to India with a buddist monk.

I doubt it matters who's first with a public domain character that dates back hundreds of years.

  • GordigGordig Posts: 10,049

To reiterate, yes the CHARACTER of Sun Wukong is in the public domain, but that's not how copyright/trademark works. For example, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel is in the public domain, but Universal's depiction of the monster is not. In the case of 3D products, the work of creating the specific Sun Wukong character in the upcoming game is subject to copyright. That's why you're free to sell a character for G9 that moves the vertices around, but you're not allowed to sell G9 itself: the base mesh and rigging are the property of Daz.

    This is Daz's Wukong character:

And this is Wukong as depicted in the upcoming game:

They're not just similar designs, they might literally be the same mesh, as it's not unheard of for Daz to license products from their creators. There are three possibilities here:

    1. Daz licensed the character from the upcoming game, in which case the creator(s) and/or studio may or may not want an Editorial License attached
    2. Somebody recreated the Wukong from the upcoming game, and Daz released it as a character, ideally not being aware of the figure's origin
    3. It's all an extraordinary coincidence
  • TesseractSpaceTesseractSpace Posts: 1,402

I've seen plenty similar depictions in movies and other media, and it doesn't look like they have the same mesh. For example, the game Wukong has a more prominent nose in the images I'm finding.

Also, if Daz did license the mesh, then why wouldn't the company making the game want the collab to be another advertisement for their game?

I'd go with coincidence rather than speculating that an editorial license is going to be imposed when there's no indication of such.
