Windows 10 "A valid PostgreSQL CMS connection could not be established."

Hello, fellow DAZ users! This week, something strange happened to my DAZ 4.9 (64 bit) which I've been using on Windows 10 for quite a while now; my smart content and Content Management Service suddenly stopped working! ("A valid PostgreSQL CMS connection could not be established...") I followed the directions from some other forum posts, but none worked. I even uninstalled the Content Managment Service and DAZ and reinstalled DAZ3D. I reinstalled PostgreSQL CMS and the Valentina conversion, messed with the CMS port, temporalily disabled my anti-virus/firewall, and reset the database and reimported the metadata. None of them worked! The strange thing is whenever I reinstall DAZ3D, the Content Management Service doesn't install! I checked out C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D, and the "Content Management Service" folder is not there!!!!!

I don't get it!! It's really fustrating! angryAny ideas? Was it a mistake to uninstall CMS? Had anyone else had this problem?

"Content Managment Service" folder was the old Valentina database.  "PostgreSQL CMS" folder is the new database.

I ended up with this message today on Win7- and now for whatever reason the hex/studio bridge does not work.  I've not uninstalled anything and had been in the middle of working a morph between Hex/Studio and this message popped up on my system.

I've just installed 4.9.1 on my render box, which runs Windows 8.1, DAZ Studio, some Nvidia drivers and that's it.  PostgreSQL installed with no problems.  This suggests to me that it is a configuration problem of some sort.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

  • just my two cents here,

had this problem on one of three systems i use, two workstations, and one server. all three running 4.9.1.

i installed via dim for each, as opposed to my usual exe instalation, and only my main workstation had this error pop up.

I wound up  installing the Postgresql standalone through exe.

    haven't had that problem since.

now to see if if crops back up after the update to 4.9.2

OK, thanks! At least I don't have to worry about the CMS folder. But, still, I can't establish a connection with PostgreSQL CMS sad

Yeah, I installed through DIM, too. And, I also installed the PostgreSQL standalone. Still, it didn't fix my problem. Thanks for the two cents, though!

Does PostgreSQL still have a problem with Windows 10 Pro?  Deadline for free upgrade is looming.

I'm not sure. I have Windows 10 Home, which was a free upgrade. It was working fine with DAZ 4.9; then, suddenly, things went south last week.....

I have Windows 7 Pro, so I'll upgrade to the Pro version.  But I thought there was an issue with Windows 10 and PostreSQL.  If not, great!  Trying to get info that will help me decide whether to upgrade or not.  Can't afford the price afterwards.  But if things stop working, that would be bad.

  • Same problem over here and no idea what to do. I reinstalled DAZ Studio, with and without anti-virus and firewall, reinstalled PostgreSQL CMS via DIM several times with anti-virus and firewall on and off - all to no effect! It just doesn't work.

Not really a problem, one might think, since I prefer manual install anyway, were it not for the items who simply work only via (un-)smart content. Too bad, bought those for nothing, obviously. Interesting though, considering the mass of postings referring to the same problem, that DAZ still denies the systemic nature of this error.

There is nothing, content wise, that won't work without Smart Content...there are things that won't work without Connect (which won't work without the CMS working), but outside the encrypted items, there is not all that much.  Granted many things are much harder to find in the Content Library without their databse entries, but they are there and working.  There's more on the content creation side that doesn't work without a working CMS...but even most of that can be worled around by manually editing the duf files.

Now, the $64 question, Matthias, what AV/security software are you running?

  • Just Win 10's original Defender and Firewall.

If you paid for such encrypted items, you want them to work, it's really that easy.

Ok...there are no known problems with Windows security and Postgre.

Yeah,  that's true.  One small consolation is, that they will become unencrypted/available for DIM download a year from their release.

One other possiblity is that there is another install of Postgre.  For some reason, it does not play well with other versions of itself.  Also installing as admin can cause problems.

  • It may be possible to fix it with a lot of deleting this, reinstalling that and downloading another thing. It may be possible to find all necessary information in the web and repair the CMS. But I don't want to. I bought an item under conditions I'm willing to fit. I use the platform the item is supposed to work upon. I paid for the item, so we I have a contract with DAZ. Problem is, the platform is obviously broken and can't compute the item by some means. And it simply is not my task to fix an error that's obviously very common, if not a global error. I have a contract with DAZ and DAZ simply isn't fulfilling it's part of it. And again: it is not my task to do DAZ's job.

We have a contract, I did my part of it, now I want DAZ to fulfill its part.

    Simple enough.

This is not a universal error - I know at least one of the developers is successfully running using Windows 10 on (I think) two or three different systems. That means the issue needs troubleshooting to (hopefully) fix it. Are you using the default directory locations for your content? Had you been able to use the CMS-based views (Categories, Products, and Smart Content) in previous builds, assuming you had any installed?

  • No, I use custom directories. That's a result from installing DAZ Studio to a SSD-drive for maximum performance and placing the library to a secondary terabyte-HDD where there is enough space.

I wasn't even using DAZ Studio before 4.9 (or, better said, before the appearance of Genesis 3 models who can't be used in Poser with acceptable effort). So I never tried any CMS-based views and can't give a precise statement. This is a virgin installation on a blank system - as far as I can say, it never worked.

OK, that should rule out some of the possible issues.

As a double-check it may be worth going to C:\Users\You\AppData\Roaming\Daz 3D\cms and opening the cmscfg.json in a text editor, then in that folder go to the ContentCluster folder and open postgresql.conf. Do the two list the same port number (in the postgresql.conf it's the port line without a leading # that matters)? Does that match the setting in DS, Edit>Preferences>CMS Settings?

  • Okay, both files use the same port (17237) and the cmscfg.json refers to the right directory where the PostgreSQL CMS is located (the postgresql.conf is a bit too cryptic for me to find any useful information within).

In DAZ Studio, though, the settings are completely others: the basic cluster directory in "none", the port 1024. I changed those lines accordingly, but the changes aren't saved, no matter whether I press 'Apply', 'Accept' or 'Apply' and then 'Accept'. The next time I open the CMS settings window anew, the directory is 'none', the port 1024.

  • Update: after I restarted my computer and likewise DAZ Studio, the CMS settings display the right port and directory.

Connect doesn't work anyway, of course.

  • Richard HaseltineRichard Haseltine Posts: 102,309

Have you run DS as adminsitrator (the right-click and Run as Adminsitrator command, not just from an adminstrator account)? That can cause permission issues, which would be consistent with the problem in setting the options in Prefernces.

  • Like I wrote, the CMS settings in the preferences and the data in both configuration files are similar now, port as well as cluster directory.

    Connect still doesn't work.

Do you mean I should start it wit the administrator command or shall not do that?

  • Richard HaseltineRichard Haseltine Posts: 102,309

    Should not.

I too get the  error with Windows 10 but for me it doesn't effect anything in connecting to smart content so its just become another dialog box I click thru when bringing up DAZ Studio. I tried one or 2 of the various suggestions for eliminating the error but gave up fiddling with trying to fix it ... just wanted to add that its still happening for me but no big deal.

  • @Richard: Ah, good, never did that since I use the admin account all the time.

@mrposer: I agree, normally I'd also shrug the problem away. But I bought at least two items I can't use without connect, that's really annoying!

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what more I can suggest - assuming you have opned a support ticket.

  • Nah, thank you... I opened support tickets before and after endless conversations they ended in "Sorry, we can't help you." Waste of time.

It seems I have to accept the bug for what it is: a problem too big.

I got this problem. But, running DAZ Studio as administrator, this problem doesn't happen. So DAZ ... fix the problem, or come up with a suggested fix, or at least a better error message (it probably has NOTHING to do with firewall) or post a work around, for those of us who don't run as admin (by the way, running with admin privileges is a terrible idea).

One work around (as mentioned before) is to remove all copies of PostgreSQL and manually install one copy with proper permissions for execution. But, most people don't want to muck about with system software with the probability of breaking a lot of other stuff.

  • Richard HaseltineRichard Haseltine Posts: 102,309

Yes, running with Admin privileges would bea  terrible idea - which is why DS doesn't require it. It should never be "Run as Administrator", and should work corretly in both admin and non-admin accounts when run normally.

For some reason, I am getting this today all the sudden.

    No services are running

    Uninstalled and re-install  postgreCMS

    Still not working.

Then in Daz i went to the preferences for CMS and saw that the folder was NONE and port 1024

so changed it to  C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Daz 3D\cms  and port 17237

But DAZ doesn't seem to save the settings either..  it keeps defaulting back to  None and 1024.

It was fine last night.  Tried Rebooting, but no luck

    ok got it fixed.

I tried opening the CMS folder in the Daz folder and i could not...   The folder was corrupt.

Did a scandisk and there was an error..  So did a repair,  and now  i can see the folder again.

and everything is working as well
