If it's better I'd stick with it. I'd still ask other Reality users with 8 what their experiences have been.

    Ah good!

I still wonder how my laptop will cope with a Luxus render, I will definitely have to try at least one though. Right now though I have other projects I want to concentrate on so any I felt like doing would have to be quickies.

It happened in a flash but if you watched her last day on the air you could spot the second Wendi snapped. No one noticed her growing detachment to humanity.

Yes I have all of that Paolo just blames M$. I actually am finding ways to open it. Selecting an object in the scene seems to work. Its gotten a lot better. I am cranking 4 renders looks like times will be greatly improved! I am prolly gonna stay with 8 unless it gets reallly bad

It looks like Windows 8 will get some kind of face-lifting in upcoming update called "Windows Blue" as noted in Financial Times article
"Microsoft prepares rethink on Windows 8 flagship software", so may be it will become more usable.
The article appeared on May 7, 2013 5:02 am
... Microsoft is preparing to reverse course over key elements of its Windows 8 operating system,
marking one of the most prominent admissions of failure for a new mass-market consumer product since
Coca-Cola’s New Coke fiasco nearly 30 years ago...

...well, the Leela and daughter pic may be the last you see from me.

Due to Windows 7 configuration issues that I cannot solve in spite of everything I tried (which are contributing to instability issues with 4.5) I'm very close to wiping the drives and selling my system off. No matter what I try I cannot unlock folders (some which Daz Studio needs access to) even though I am supposedly the "system administrator". I've tired every suggestion I was given and nothing seems to work. I cannot afford an IT specialist (at the consulting rates they charge) to come in and fix this. Basically I feel I wasted over 1,200USD and nearly eighteen months of my life learning how to configure and build a workstation only to be hosed by Microsoft stupidity (not to mention the money spent on upgrades to the applications in preparation).

I am sick of struggling against the software and OS every time I want to realise my ideas. Why cant these overpaid idiots make things that work properly? Why does it have to be so blasted cryptic? Do they even know what the words "Simple" and "Elegant" mean?

I never had this trouble with XP. But now they put this stupid extra level of ":protection from the user" in and it has been nothing short of a nightmare for me. After getting the workstation up and everything installed I was so excited. Now because of 4.5 locking up and crashing to the desktop due to conflicts with something in the Win7 configuration, I am losing interest. It's as if the issues I used to face in 32 bit have been eclipsed by newer, more frustrating ones that I have no idea of how to correct.

I just ant to create scenes that tell a story, not be some damned software debugger.

...is that too much to ask?

Didn't you suggest I go back to 7 from 8? I don't get it I ran DS on 2 notebooks and my new 8 workstation without a hitch! I imagine it will work fine when it gets back with 7... Reality was what was giving me the problem. Something I realized this evening. I could of tried re installing Reality running compatibility mode to 7 which is an option in 8. I got this to work to run office 2010 starter. If I have issues at least I know I can put back 8....

...yes, but you and others seemed to have 7 running smoothly whereas I apparently do not.

I had thought things were running well until I tried to view a logfile after 4.5 froze up on me and I couldn't get into the Application Data folder where these are stored.

I mean how can one, being the system administrator, be locked out of folders on one's own system with "Access Denied" errors?

It's like trying to put my key in my front door but not being able to unlock it to get in even though the rent is paid.

This is why I think 4.5 has been acting so flaky as it won't install anything to a locked folder.

I never had this happen in XP, and like I mentioned, it apparently has to do with this "new"level of "protection" Microsquish put into 7 (which is also tied to Net access). So, if one wants tougher online protection against malware & such, it also adversely affects one's personal access as well - stupid, stupid, stupid idea. This is something I didn't learn about until a few hours ago.

I can't even imagine the "hidden garbage" like this that ver. 8 probably has. The more I have dealt with this. the more I feel that XP was the best OS MS ever released this side of old DOS4.

Had I known this earlier I would not have made the recommendation, I apologise.

Its ok does not mean it will be glitchy for me... Actually 8 seemed ok besides the Reality problem one may say Paolo would need to update his software. But as Artini pointed out and my wife & I heard on the radio today, 8 is considered a catastrophic failure. It did not run DS or anything else I do any smoother so I dont care about ditching it. As long as my new 2 grand workstation does what I need it to. For Christ's sake I can run it on an HP laptop....

I don't get why you two are having so many issues, with just about every program I've had in both 7 and 8 I've done Run As Administrator on both the .exe and the shortcut and everything, DS included, has been fine. I guess a possibility could be a windows update that hasn't installed properly, that has been known, but whenever it has happened to me a subsequent update has fixed whatever problem there was.

Kyoto, where do you have your DS files stored? I install the main DS program to Program Files and install content in My Documents. I've never been locked out of any DS folder when doing that. Before you go trashing all your hard work just take a look at your installation.

I was just able to access the log, it was in: C:\Users\your name\AppData\Roaming\Daz 3D\Studio 4\

In your Folder Options you have to have 'access hidden files and folders' checked.

My issue was only with reality that could take up to 30 times plus to start up. I asked Paolo on Rendo he said that it was a win 8 problem. The store I bought the workstation is willing to roll it back to 7 at no extra cost (Love good after sales service:) To be honest I saw nothing in 8 that really makes me want it. Lets say down the road that there are benefits to using it I do still own a $15.00 upgrade to 8 that I purchased in Feb that I was not able to install on my notebook due to not having any compatible video card drivers so I dont consider myself with any big problem.. OT I just installed DS 4.6 and will do on the workstation when it gets back.

    That's fine then,

I've never had any of the issues that Kyoto has described in either 7 or 8. There's no way I can ever go back to 7 now so this Blue update may be something for me to consider.

    I'll get DS4.6 when it's not a beta.

Thats what Anton aka Doc Evil recommends to see how blue will play out... I guess 24 hours did not give me enough time to get attached to 8. But by what I am hearing it's another ME or Vista...

    Yeah baby!

Microsoft should just be Microsoft, they are NOT Apple and nor will they ever be, they should just concentrate on what they're best at and forget the competition. I neither have nor want a tablet or a smartphone, but, I do want and need a PC with an OS that works.

With the shell its pretty simple I actually customized a metro interface as well but besides that I saw no difference on how DS or Lux ran. I did like the fact that external drives don't need to find a driver for almost a minute when you plug a device in and the boot up time with SSD drive is pretty well instant. Since this is a workstation I will be simply putting it to sleep most of the time so no biggie..

Perhaps you should consider Luxus as an alternative? If you're happy with 8 it might be less hassle.

Yes it did but R3 is not too far away and it prolly will be 8 compatible which I can then install my upgrade file... I do have options I think going with 7 for new will work fine for now..

...well ran this by several others and it seems somehow even thought I have admin status, something in the the way the OS was setup locked my permission/access status at a "Standard User" level. Most likely something I did wrong in the install setup process that I don't remember (not very savvy about all this IT stuff particularly since WIn7 apparently has that extra layer of protection against the user that XP didn't). As I understand the only way to totally fix this would be to reinstall the OS, something I'm not going to try again as I don't know how I messed it up in the first place, and I don't have the resources to pay a real professional to come in and fix it.

I was also given a command to reference that dealt with activating the built in system Administrator account. After reading about it ran it from the command prompt and now I can at least run, install, and uninstall programmes as the administrator (still can't change permissions on those pesky locked folders though).

Uninstalled 4.5 and the built in plugins (at Admin level) and then installed 4.6 (along with the plugins in the bundle) using the same command. Made sure the main application went to C:/Programme Files and directed the Library to Daz3D/Studio4/My Library on the D:/Runtime drive (where it was supposed to reside for 4.5). So far it seems to have worked and nothing went where it wasn't supposed to this time.

Opened the app and checked to make sure the various directories were mapped properly then loaded a scene I was working on and decided to give it the proverbial "acid test" by once again trying to apply the Silkessence shader the Teens, Mall Jacket which kept locking 4.5 up. Applied without a hitch.

Made some light adjustments rendered, made some more light adjustments, rendered again, and below is the final result.

So I still have a somewhat crippled Win7, but one that is a bit more serviceable that it previously was.

Hmm, not ideal, but, you did at least manage to get a render out. There is a section in Control Panel that deals with user accounts, is there not something in there you can do!?

I'll hold off on 4.6 till it's out of Beta.

Yeah, I'll probably get Blue too. At least I won't need Classic Shell. The original 7 Aero scheme would be nice too, though it remains to be seen whether 8 users will ever get that back.

Whatever, the majority of 3D stuff I have works in 8 though I do have to run Vue in compatibility mode. Still, I'll probably ditch that for Bryce 8, whenever that is coming out!
