Thank you for the hdr presets on sharecg, much appreciated! Here's just a quick test of Bryce Park HDR prop following the method you outlined, only ran a minute or two on my i5. This technique has tremendous potential for realistic renders and the price is right!

It's always great to see what people make using them. It's ideal for reflections like your chrome man and of course, the reflections also propagate to all shiny surfaces in the scene, so it really does add a nice layer of realism. Sadly, attempts to do similar presets with Reality fell a bit flat, but I'll chat to Paolo on the Rendo thread and see if it can't be done. If it is possible, expect Reality presets up as soon as they're done.

...looks really great. Kind of like T-2.

Did you use AoA's Metallised Glass Shaders or DZ Fire's Real Metals?

Thanks, I like how it turned out too although it was an incredibly easy happy accident. The metallic guy is just the base genesis figure with blue marble (I think this material comes free with Studio 4.6) applied to all surfaces and then Luxus material carpaint2 applied over that, nothing more. I had no expectation that it would turn out like that. Seems awfully glossy for car paint but perhaps it's the combination with the blue marble that produces the effect. Not sure as I had no time to play more.

...if the blue marble was polished, yes it would add to the reflectivity. The marble floors of Jack T's Aslan court sets have a 100% reflectivity. setting. Don't know how Luxus shaders work as I do not have that plugin and have only been playing around with shader packs made for 3DL.

My render is looking a lot more crisp now. Here it is at 3000 samples.

I'm happy with where it's at. The noise is gone and there's not much more to be gained by letting it run on. I was quite happy with how the subsurface scatter came out too, so I'll probably do some minor postwork and add it to my DA account.

SSD's are incredible for boot drives, if a bit expensive. They're lightning fast and make conventional hard drives look like snails in comparison. I've only got a small size SSD for my PC at the moment, used for the boot drive only. They're far more expensive per GB when compared to hard drives, so I've had to humble myself with a regular 2Tb HDD for my media and programs.

Out of interest, what's the size of the SSD in your notebook?

I'd still like to see the final version.

I got it in my beast 1st for my op system and programs which is why I installed a 250G in my notebook. Had them do a fresh win 7 install so I am also rid of that bloatware crap that comes with HP and most commercial systems.. I have 250's both machines

It is but with no moving parts kind of like the flash drive sticks I use my external 2T drive for all my content folders and storage and to work back & forth on both machines..

Edit nother nice thing my notebook use to take 3 minutes plus to fully boot up..

I replaced my main HDD which is now an anchor. Its no big deal since like I mentioned, I am able to run all content/ storage on my external. Its running so much smoother..

...speaking of things with triple letters, installed and began playing around with the SSS Toolbox. Really makes it easier to see what this does as it has a nice array of different labelled presets (like Skin A, Skin B ,Hair A, etc...) all split up by category (Specularity, Velvet, SSS, Refraction, etc...). Feel like I'm going back to school with this, but the first few render tests were definitely enlightening. The other nice feature is that it gives one a starting point to work from to make final adjustments to fit the scene.

...ach, at the hotspot and thought, "hey a good time to DL some Reality shaders" only to discover I need to do so through the plugin on the workstation which means l-o-n-n-g wait times and frequent corruptions from timeouts and resets.

...got everything else while I was there, just not the Reality shaders. Like I mentioned seems they need to be DL'd and installed through a control in the plugin rather than as separate files. Connectivity is totally in the loo tonight (neighbours must be streaming several channels on their sat dishes) so there is no point in even trying.

Had a post on another thread take ninety minutes and over a dozen and a half attempts due to timeouts, resets, "server not found" errors and multiple shutdowns/rebooting of the modem app.

Sounds like a very odd set up you have there, the only time I used to have any problems like that was when I had dial-up.

...yeah part of it is my location, part of it is most likely the USB modem is getting old and needs to be replaced,

However the service provider I have seems to be interested in abandoning conventional net access and push everyone to a "Dumb Phone" plan which for my purposes is totally useless as they don't have the storage capacity to DL something like a major App update and no "real" keyboard other than a tiny virtual one on the screen which is impossible for me to use with my stiff fingers and hands. Crikey, I have enough trouble being slightly dyslexic the way it is, it would make it appear like English is my "fifth" or "sixth" language with all the misspellings because I have to try and type everything on those minuscule keys on a tiny screen.

A hardwired connection is not an option for they are usually bundled with Television and Phone service (neither of which I need or want) and require a signing multi-year contract with penalties if I quit early.

Ouch, sounds like you're between a rock and a hard place. I annoys me when companies keep pushing fiber optic broadband. In rural areas like where I am cable is just not feasible. Even in cities it isn't everywhere. The industry makes far too many assumptions these days.

Still, let's just count ourselves lucky that we can get what we can when we can and somehow we can still get good renders out

    @ Rogerbee

Just as an FYI thing, since I noticed you still seemed a little confused:
An SSD is (as Bobvan mentioned) a Solid State Drive, and is a type of hard drive specifically made based on the technology in flash drives (like thumbdrives and such).
Primary benefits are extremely fast access, read, and write times, as well as no moving parts (which means less wear and tear, less heat, less chance of mechanical failure). In fact, their only real downfall (as I believe Herald mentioned), is that their price-per-byte is quite high and their capacity is relatively low. They are most commonly used as "boot up" drives (which contain solely the operating system and perhaps a handful of frequently used programs), although they are quite the rage for laptops. since they produce less heat and require less power. Due to the price point, they are essentially a money pit for anything like a mass storage solution, and most people find the con of the price in no way outweighs the speed when storing anything large or rarely used (like a runtime).

Well, now that I read it over, it seems a bit rambly, but perhaps someone will find it useful. Laters :-)

I think it was worth every cent since I still use my notebook as much if not more then my tower and breaths new life into my notebook. Other bonus, lets say I do away with the notebook I add it to my monster system. As a matter of fact render times are not that different between the notebook & monster system. The benefit of the monster system is to render higher volume scenes vs the notebook.

    Anyhoo some newer renders http://bobvan.deviantart.com/art/Island-260-377705088

    Thanks,

I'm lucky in that my processor and RAM are pretty beefy and I'm happy with the speed, so I might not need one, but, I can see where they would be of benefit.
