I think it was worth every cent since I still use my notebook as much if not more then my tower and breaths new life into my notebook. Other bonus, lets say I do away with the notebook I add it to my monster system. As a matter of fact render times are not that different between the notebook & monster system. The benefit of the monster system is to render higher volume scenes vs the notebook.

    Anyhoo some newer renders http://bobvan.deviantart.com/art/Island-260-377705088

    Nice as always!

    Title: Learning How to Fly..

You have a real talent for conveying feeling through imagery. It's a lovely image, thanks for sharing.

Here's one I did recently, depicting a famous scene from a book I read once or twice. Used here was the Fairytale cottage interior, and 3D Universe's three bears. Luckily, the blanket in the scene is a separate model, so I took it into Poser and used the cloth room for a realistic drape over the scene, then loaded the result in as a morph in Daz Studio to cover up young Goldilocks. I hid the pillow by making it invisible.

The broken chair is actually THREE chairs, but with various parts made invisible. I selected a series of faces using Daz's polygon tool and turned them into a new surface to hide the parts I didn't need. I used one chair for the broken leg, another for the rest of the damaged chair, and the last one I hid the chair using the opacity settings so that only the cushion remained.

    That is brilliant!

I tell you what I'd like to see, which I think would be possible with Genesis, is some Ray Harryhausen creatures. If Daz could approach his estate and get the proper licensing agreement it'd be a real coup for them. I'd love to be able to do scenes with his creatures, stuff like Medusa, the Ymir and the Cyclops. Yeah, that would be amazing. Then there's the human characters like Sinbad, Jason and Perseus. Oh yeah!

    ...thank you.

There are times I see stunning works that literally "pop" (as Waldemar from DreamLight would say) from the screen which make mine seem kind of "flat" in comparison. While I know lighting concepts pretty well, I have yet to figure how how to achieve that effect with the 3D medium.

Really need to get those shader DLs for Reality/Lux. Looking into a hardwire connection after a recent chat session with one of the cable providers. Supposedly I can get just internet without the Telly/phone rubbish but want to make sure the prices I see are not based off a bundled plan and there is no long term contract involved. Unfortunately their customer service office moved from being a ten minute walk away to a lengthy three bus "odyssey" (one way).

HeraldofFire, that is really sweet. I have the cottage (both interior and exterior) somewhere in my runtime.

    Thank you both.

Kyoto, I think lighting is probably one of the harder aspects of working in 3D. I've yet to master indoor lighting, and I still have immense difficulty lighting night time scenes. Most of my night scenes were done using some cunning postwork trickery rather than actual scene lighting. If we can master lighting, I think we can safely say most of the work would be done. My ultimate goal is photorealism, but I'm a long way from achieving that yet. I lack both the textures and the know how to even come close, but that won't stop me pursuing it.

Rogerbee, they had a Medusa set for Victoria 4 which you might be able to make use of, and I'm certain I've seen a Cyclops somewhere. The perseus outfit would be awesome though.

Mmm, nah, both of them are way off,

They'd have to be the proper Harryhausen creatures or nothing, that was why I suggested that Daz get a license. Mec4D has done a nice Sinbad which looks like he did in Golden Voyage.

Somebody on DeviantArt has done a 3D model of the Ymir, but, I don't know if it could be rigged.

...yeah, RL theatrical lighting is different in some ways as it is also the set designer's, costumer's, and makeup artist's jobs to make sure their creations work together with the lighting to have a presence on the stage. In a sense with 3D CG, I basically have to wear all those hats by dealing with textures and surface values as well.

I wish artists like LX, Isikol, Laticis and Neelz would provide a bit of insight into how they achieve that kind of "presence". Not much into the "trial and error" method. Don't really have the Zlotys (or the bandwidth) for Waldemar's training programmes.

    Thanks, Roger!

And yeah, she does, kind of, doesn't she?

Of course, now I have a cunning plan forming in my head.

Unrelated (mostly) question - would folks suggest I invest in some cool camera effects as found in the Daz store, or is there a method of using lighting that would be easier - how would you create one of those "columns of light" that alien/fairy/dream-being/long-lost princesses are found floating in? You know the ones I'm talking about?

Hence is why I am sticking with Reality I always get my desired results and having 2 machines to play with render times are not a concern since the beast is baking away while I create more stuff on the notebook at work loving the SSD!

Cute Crystan I am going to have some tooned characters in my next land of the giants story. The last one ended with a cross over with sliders where they "slid" at the end to avoid disaster so one of the places they will slide to is a toonish place (think katey perryish candy video) with toon characters...

Have you tried LAMH or Garibaldi? I've not tried it yet myself, despite owning Garibaldi, but they can both export as OBJ to allow you to use them in Luxrender for some fantastic hair. Of course, this means genuine geometry, so expect longer render times than you'd get in 3DL since it's not fully optimized. Still seems like something which could give fantastic results in the right hands though.

I hear its not that simple all the same... I have no beef with rendering in3DL if the results were worth it its just i am soooo used to my workflow with lux I get a bit lost but there is better basic SSS with 3DL now

One thing that does irk me about LAMH is when artists assume we have it. There was a really nice werewolf released recently, but, it seemed that the only way to get fur on it was to use LAMH. I'm not getting that just to use on one figure!

So, Genesis 2 is upon us, that's going to make places like RDNA and Rendo sit up, they still gamely cling to Gen 4, there will be tears if they continue to do so....
