I probably should try to do something like that, but I just don't feel secure enough to do it. Too afraid to mess things up

The beauty of the custom categories is that it doesn't move any files so you won't mess it up.  It creates links to the originals.  If you go to page 18 of my thread about halfway down, I show how to set it up and there are also examples of my category structure as well as a couple other peoples

I am anti-Ollie. Reminds me of Cory and his aviator set. I will say no more since people clearly like him...but no.

I have to say I dislike Cory intensely and would never buy him, but I'm totally taken with Ollie. And totally taken with Sakura, but dislikeing Aiko. I'm glad they're doing a range of different styles!

  • My biggest gripe? Not the shape, but yet another HD morph I don't want.

I really would prefer some of the other popular male figures we have yet to see like gianni or Lee and an attractive male toon base be released before we start getting niche male products.

  • IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,548

Well, I just went and had a look at Ollie.  I don't do toons so I don't have any use for him.  He is definitely an interesting looking character though.  If I did a lot of toon renders I might pick him up but as it stands, I just don't have a use for him.  I will be interested to see some renders of him though.

I do agree with Serene Night though and would really like to see both Gianni and Lee sooner rather than later.

The category chaos thing is why I stopped buying older content unless it's something so spectacular that I'm willing to categorise it myself immediately (I don't think this has happened yet!). Even at bargain-basement prices it's not much of a deal if bits of it are flung around all over the place and the prospect of using it demands so much stamina that it's easier to forget you own it. I've got more than enough stuff like that already.

New products aren't immune, though. I bought Sickle Yield/Digital Art Live's latest tutorial this week, fully expecting to find it with the rest of my stash under General/Digital Art Live. No. Could it be under Tutorials? No. It escaped my notice that Digital Art Live has suddenly and mysteriously got a top level category in my runtime now and the product is the sole thing in there, so I ended up going to the readme file via the product library in My Account to find this out. I watched ten minutes of it before realising I'd completely lost my mojo and couldn't be bothered any more. I'll probably watch it sooner rather than later as Sickle Yield is never a disappointment, but there's just no winning sometimes :)

I still use G2 (and occasionally G1). I skipped G3, but I recently upgraded some of my G1's to G8. Not Gen-X-ed or otherwise transferred, but recreated them (I only cheated with a saved morph of the G1's used on teh G8 to get a base to work from). The idea was not to copy, but to upgrade and fix tiny details that were bugging me.

G1 Amber is a tad sceptical about her upgrade in progress here ;)

Also taking my first steps into iray now I have a system that can handle it and time to fiddle, but I'm not yet convinced..

@mori_mann  Very nice!  I think you'll like iray once you use it.

I went into Iray kicking and screaming.  I came in to Daz like 4 months before Iray was introduced and had just got the hang of lighting etc (mostly) in 3Delight and really liked it, to me its was far more intuitive than Iray.  I'm a firm convert now though, although I still like 3Delight for certain things.

Here's another reference if you need it. Both SereneNight and I did quite a few posts on creating custom categories years ago, back in January 2016. SereneNight posted all her categories, I shared mine, and I did a tutorial on how to create them here.  (Reminder: look at the first posts of this thread, I've kept all the References from 2013 on tutorials and tips.)  It's good to have multiple folks showing how to do it, because that might make it click easier and different approaches may be possible. Creating categories is very easy, and if I say that, you know it is- I am the least technical person on this planet.

I did pick up Ollie since I got the additional 20% off with the gift card discounted too, as I've been selectively spending during this sale. I've griped before, but when they keep the Aiko 8 Pro Bundle for such a long time to get the 10% discount, I don't buy. They need to alternate that. It's not "just" 10%, it adds up day after day after day.  Well, it would, if I were buying.

  • IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,548

Ya I passed on a lot of stuff I might have picked up because of the length of hte Aiko8 discount.  Wasn't going to encourage me to buy her and her bundle either.  All it did was irritate me.

Coming to terms with it after some more tutorials, but it'll take some time before it'll become my main render engine. It if ever does at all. Not that it matters, it'nice to have the option to choose :D

Wait until the lighting finally clicks. It's incredible to be able to light a scene with one single light and have it all bounce and fill naturally. laugh

Thanks for the work around. This community is amazing!

Honestly, though, I gave up and requested a refund. Admittedly, i have had a couple of very trying days so my patience is thin and frustration levels are high. I have no hard feelings against the artist. I am disappointed in DAZ and am struggling to not have hard feelings against DAZ for causing the situation by not having those super secret textures for sale on their own.

Plus I've never had trouble typing and right now I can't type without voice recognition. That probably adds to my irritation. That and windows voice recognition kinda sucks.

Keep on being awesome, folks, You are appreciated.

@illysArt I know what you're going through! A couple of years ago I fractured my right shoulder and could not move my right arm at all (except when a nurse came in to help me with special exercises so I didn't get "frozen shoulder.") But I had to eat with my left hand, type, etc...  It was over 90 degrees out and my apartment doesn't have air conditioning and is like a hot box, and I couldn't even put my hair up in a ponytail without someone's help and I live alone. I had to have a nurse help me shower! I felt like I had turned into a geriatric person overnight!  I had friends open a ton of water bottles whenever they were over because I couldn't even do that! I remember I bought drawing paper and pastels from Amazon and tried to teach myself to draw with my left hand LOL. So I know what you're going through! Instead of getting irritated, just look at it as a fun challenge (I know that sounds weird) but in my mind, I made everything into a challenge from a reality TV show, imagining I would win a prize if I could just complete this one challenging thing (like picking up ice cubes that had fallen on the kitchen floor with my parents' picker-up thingie with my left hand. I couldn't even bend down withoutout excruciating shoulder pain.)  Get better soon!

I still regularly use G2F. One of my favourites in that generation is SI Domina, shown here.

Wow, she looks great!  Unbelievable that it's G2! I found all pre-G3 characters to look too stylized to be realistic, but that looks great!

  • WonderlandWonderland Posts: 7,001
I was not happy though with the texture for the top, it looks good on other people's renders but close-up it looked like plaster to me

It's awful. It looks hard in every light I've tried. When I did my render I had to completely kill the bump/displacement/normals and stack translucent geoshells over it to get it to actually look soft.

That's a great trick! I have to try that sometime... I'm just discovering the wonders of geoshells! laugh

These shaders are where I learned that trick. It is a fantastic way to add fuzziness and softness to cloth and a fantastic set of shaders. https://www.daz3d.com/uhd-fuzzy-cloth-shaders-and-merchant-resource

I have those! I used them once for a teddy bear. I have to remember that you can use it for clothes too! Thanks.

One of the main reasons I am so aggressive in keeping my custom categories updated is the fact that the file structure drives me bat s*** crazy.  I literally cannot work with it like that.  I was spending so much time finding stuff I never had time to actually do anything.  Doing the custom categories is the only thing that allowed me to save my sanity.  I only have to find things once, then its put into a place that makes sense to be and I know exactly where to look for it.  Need a medieval room?  Its under building and scenes/fantasy medieval, interiors.  Need a sleek modern dress for genesis 2?  Its under people/Genesis 2/ Female/Clothing/Dresses/Modern.  Its a major pain to put together (I just got a new laptop and decided to do the custom categories from scratch and clean things up a bit instead of copying over from the pc) especially if you have a lot of stuff, the new laptop conversion is on week three as far as getting the categories done, but its worth the effort as far as I'm concerned.  And I am still pissed off about them taking away the blue bars to find new stuff.  I can't find the old stuff most of the time, much less the new content!

How do you do that in DS? I have my Poser files organized perfectly but have no idea how to do that in Daz, I usually use the smart pane because my content pane just lists everything by alphabetical letters. I don't even know where people are finding "character" to list their first G3 characters. I just have a list of folders with numbers, then letters, but everything is listed, not separated out as characters or whatever...

Alicia- to find your first ten characters (and so all of us do it in an organized manner) go to Content Library>Daz Studio Formats>Daz>People>Genesis 3 Female>Characters. A bunch of avatars/icons will show up. I just used my first ten from there, I didn't continue on in the file structure to see the folders listed on the right. Some will be there which aren't in the avatars/icons/thumbs, but some are vanity folders and I wanted to just stick with the characters. That does mean that all the EJ (EmmaAndJordi) will be down in the E's when I get there in the avatars, such as EJ Agata, etc. But I had to decide which way to go with it and have so many that just doing the thumbs/icons was the way I am going.

If you want to include those in folders, of course you do what you want to do. It was just more work for me LOL.

The Ollie bundle is only $29 something if you add 4 related items and they go down to the $3-$4 level. I'll be curious to see how he mixes with other characters. The bundle has some fun old man hair, punk hair, and clothes I may try on fantasy dwarves or geeky professors. I like to go out of my box sometimes and this is definitely way out! I think he'll be fun to play with.

There are so many other things I want, but the 55% off just isn't cutting it, my cart shoots up over $150 way too easily, I have to keep culling things out. I really think it would be beneficial for PAs to have higher discounts because people would stock up and buy more, so more PAs products would be sold as people might try out stuff on a whim if the prices were good... I would shell out $150 for like 60 items but not for 10-12. I spend more money when they have 90% off sales or even glitches than when there are regular sales.

You must have Aiko Pro Bundle, because the lowest I got it was $33.06 at 76% off (no PC+ codes.)  I had the four requirements in the cart.

So, your post was timely. Breaking away for a bit from the rendering the first 10 G3Fs, anyone who has Ollie, here's the challenge. Use Ollie and show some him mixed with some other Genesis 8 Males. OMGosh, this is too funny. Here's a fast/easy way to do it, for you non-technical folks.

    1. Select Ollie in your scene tab.
    2. Go up to Window>(Panes/Tabs) and click on Shaping. You can leave it as a floating window or dock it.)
    3. Open the menu for Ollie in Shaping, under Actor find People. Then just use the sliders. I just added the snowman plumpness, it's a hoot.

Ollie, Garret, Old Chap with Aldo's skin... (and now I'm off to bed before I wake up with keyboard prints in my face)

Coming up: (and I'm making these total 100% btw)   IN PROGRESS
    Ollie Body 40.0%
    Alexander Body 30.0%
    Darius 8    10%
EJ Buddy 20%   This is a good one to add meat to the bones.

Cranking these out so not going to finesse for perfect lighting. I know some of you are waiting to see how blending different characters will look. This is just the body above. Scroll past this one for the head. (Coming)

To change the head, do the previous steps but in Shaping select Head>People

This may change, but here's what I am testing: (STAY AWAY FROM GIOVANNI, IT'S THE SAME TYPE NOSE!)

(It's rendering now and he is worth seeing.)
    Ollie Head 35%
    Edward 8 Head 10%
Jin   A nice surprise, this plumpens the nose/ widens it. 30%
    Kincaid 25%

I took the plunge late last year and stopped using categories for major things. I was finding I’d spend a lot of time categorizing and then something would happen to Studio and I would lose the categories even though I backed stuff up,, now I just go manually into studio. And recategorize it there. This is not recommended for beginners because some stuff breaks. But I find it much easier to find my poses when I put say all handgun poses in a folder. You will break stuff in the a-z product directory but I find this a faster approach than using studios inborn categorization system.

unfortunately poser related content must still be made into products and categorized to be able to find it where it is buried.

I think studios inborn categorization system must either hate me or my computers as I've never gotten it to work on any of my systems present or past

So I have just manually customized my content

First, that head and body with with Odin Hair and Beard, and Badlands Gladiator Outfit (Gen8M)
He definitely needs beefing up, the head is large for the body too.

    Rendering now:
Beefed up to be a gladiator, adding Garrett 87% (which goes over the 100% total)  and the nose tweaked.
    Nose tip height  88.2%
    Nose size -35.3

    Here he is:

And ooh-la-la! Wait till you see Ollie!

Now, if only that hair and beard set was available fot Genesis 1 (and if I had the money) I'd be all over it. It would be perfect for my Star Wars RPG character.
