    I finally finished my entry!

    Title: PYGMALION

    This render was inspired by a lot of different things. I like how some science fiction illustrators, set designers, and costume designers take inspiration from the past and re-imagine costume, architecture, and culture to create worlds of the future.

    I was originally inspired by the myth of Pygmalion, who fell in love with one of his sculptures. I was also thinking about Blade Runner and Metropolis and thought it would be fun to create a futuristic version of Pygmalion and replace the sculpture with a robot or android. I think visually I took a lot of inspiration from Metropolis, Blade Runner, Tron, the art of H.R. Giger, and probably all sorts of other things.

    I wanted the render to have kind of a 'film advertisement' or 'promotional image/art' feel to it. I decided to use 3D letters to spell out a title and tag-line. Scaling and arranging the letters turned out to be harder than I thought it would be… the kerning is still a little off.

    The image actually turned out pretty different from what I had originally planned, but I'm really happy with the result!

    So, maybe I missed the contest deadline, but my latest book cover ("The Signature of God" by John Dalmas) was done in Poser 9, some modeling in 3DSMAX, very little postwork (as in "almost none") after the Poser render. "Breaking Waves" and Jenay's freebie "Morphing Spore" were significant contributors. Available from Amazon.com

    Footnote: In addition to a heluvalotta high res mapping and lights everywhere, what makes an image come to life is the action. For scenes like this, I begin by building the scene in frame 1, then morphing and changing selected elements (in this case, the 'spores' and, to a lesser degree, one of several layers of the 'waves') -- and I mean, DRASTICALLY morphing, scaling, rotating and transitioning these things, in frame 3, then rendering frame 2 with motion blur turned on in the Render Settings. The breaking waves, even the ones rolling over the ship slamming the Space Needle, came straight out of the Firefly render engine with almost no retouch required in Photoshop. Note that motion blur will not affect shadows: you may have a fairy's wings blurring through 180 degrees, but the shadow will only show that hard-edged moment frozen in time halfway between the start and stop position. So far, I haven't found a fix or workaround that doesn't involve Photoshop. sigh

    I just got an email that there was a reply here that I don't find. No, this is not intended as a shameless plug for the book (although I am proud of it) -- it's intended to be a response to this "call for renders" and "The future ain't what it used to be" gallery. I don't intend to release the base art without some protection for fine-art prints later, would you prefer I do one with a watermark? (Easily accomplished!)

    I removed my question because I figured you had posted to the wrong thread. I'm sorry it came out the wrong way. I was just stumped until it dawned on me this might not be the thread you meant to post too.

    It's very reminiscent of Metropolis, without being a direct copy... Very nice.

    I don't see the metal bra in your image, and I don't get any links on the mediafire page (but I never get links on mediafire pages - they've forgotten how to support plain HTML, and I'm not installing a new browser just for one site)... However, you have enough other freebies that the entry still qualifies.

    Everyone, we're into the home stretch - one day and seven hours left, as I post this. Time to stop making your renders look perfect and live with what you've got.

    Oh, yes - June 1 and 2 are the Doors Open weekend where I live (checks the charge in the camera's battery), so I might be a bit distracted as to announcing who actually wins... or I might not, depending on how quickly the judges respond after the challenge ends.

    Wow, no cleanup needed in aisle 3! :lol: What did you use for that calculation? Most calculators don't have that much precision.

    Dorseyland: Wheeee, thanks! :) The lights are:

    UE2 Softbox, occlusion with directional shadows, intensity 100%, intensity scale 165%, slightly bluish color.

    A white distant light at 100% to shine on the outside objects and cast a shadow through the window. Raytraced shadow 5% softness.

    A linear point light in the ceiling gas light that I thought would light the room, but it kept creating glare against the windows, so now it's just a little sphere to cast some light against the lamp's metal frame.

    A pale-yellowish spotlight above the room's ceiling, pointing down, no shadows. It was originally meant to be specular-only, but wound up being the room's light when the point light didn't pan out. I think it could be brighter, but I ran out of trial-and-error time, so I went with the last render that had no window glare.

    An extra spotlight on the nearest exterior structure, pointing up a bit from below to give some extra shine to the parts in shadow.

    Okay, you lost me at "UE2 Softbox", but I suspect that's the key. Regardless, I think the intense blue of the sky (accentuated by the haze below) goes so well with the subdued interior lighting that it makes the quite realistic scene looks like a classic illustration from the same bygone era as the census machine.

    Plus, I love steampunk.

    Sorry! By UE2 Softbox I mean the UberEnvironment light by omnifreaker that comes with DAZ Studio, for adding ambient occlusion to the scene. The Softbox setting loads the particular image it uses to calculate the light and shadows. The Softbox image is a really soft blurry grayish white and black, no hard bright whites or colors. I hoped it would be neutral enough to work okay on both the outside and the inside.

    ...At least, I'm pretty sure it came with DS...if not, I'm over my limit on purchased content. I think it's the same UberEnvironment light I've been using since I first downloaded DS, before I ever picked up any light sets....

    Rob, if UberEnvironment 2 is a countable item, I should have counted it!

    If I recall correctly, UE2 comes with Studio 4 Pro, which is free - so it's a no-count item by my reading of the rules.

    But I've already accepted your entry and closed the competition, so you're in even if I made a mistake.

    Still waiting on the judges, other than jeepers... but it is the middle of a weekend.
