I smell ether and it is giving me a headache

I rang the environmental protection authority to ask what a meth lab smells like

    they were utterly no help

I don't want to get into trouble for filing a false police report against my neighbours either

if they have a clandestine lab and it blows up I hope my house doesn't catch fire

If reasonable, ask the neighbors if they are painting or lacquering or ask if they smell gas and tell them that it is causing headaches.  Don't let on that you suspect drugs or are going to report it.  Especially if they are scary people.

If that doesn't work, report smelling gas to the utilities company.  They have to come around to investigate and might notice the smell too.  Or their instruments might set off alarm bells.  The police or fire department might come too, adding to the confusion and getting more experts to weigh-in their opinions of what's going on.  If true, you'll be rid of your neighbors and might make an exciting event.  If false, you might find out it was a temporary paint job, or get them to stop whatever activity was causing it.

    may if it persists

so far was a once off, extremely strong but disapated afterwards

Was there a flash and a large mushroom cloud above their home just before the dissipation?

My fish never listen to me.  I put fish food into their water and try to tell them to wait till lunch time.  It is maybe 7 minutes till lunch and they already started eating the food.

Back when I was a fish, I was never really sure if I'd ever get to eat again. So whenever I saw food, I would go for it immediately. I would usually find food around the same time each day, but there was no pattern.

I once tried to iron a pair of socks, and melted them.

I once socked an iron pear.  It wasn't at all juicy.

Still better than concrete shoes, with matching cement overcoat.

A Ponderable:  Hmmm...   does the "quick" in quicksand mean "fast" or "alive"?  as in "the quick vs the dead".  I've never heard of "slowsand", nor "deadsand".

Alive, same Proto-IE root as Latin vivus and Greek bios.

Yes, it means alive. Kind of like quicksilver. And the phrase "They were probably made of the wrong thread..." is just what happens when this thing automatically saves a draft of your post whether you like it or not.
