Question about Toon Girl Sadie (WARNING: I’m a NEWB)
Greetings!!
I'm brand new to the Forum, DAZ 3D and 3D graphics in general, so please be gentle. I've been a 2D artist for several years and I just learned about DAZ 3D yesterday. OMG....sooooo excited!!
I'm an author and though I write Paranormal Fiction with strong romantic elements (some really hot sex in my stories, too), I also write children's books as "Christine Davies" (you can see my book Where Art Thou Unicorn at Amazon). I've been looking for a way to professionally illustrate my children's books and I think DAZ 3D might be the answer to my prayers and tiny budget!!
Here's the plan and I'd love it if any of you could correct me on my ideas if my ignorance is getting in the way:
1. Buy the following modules/packs...
--Toon Girl Sadie as my base model
--Mae to create various body types, boys AND girls, and lots of different faces for the characters in my books
--Clothes as needed (as I run out of texturing and color options, I'll spend money to get more clothes for my characters)
--Backgrounds and scenes as needed (e.g., caves for my dragon stories, kids' bedrooms, etc.)
--Poses to make positioning characters easier
2. Set up my worlds
3. Drop the characters in and apply poses making minor tweaks
4. Use necessary lighting (as I learned in the wonderful tutorials)
5. Render and fine-tune in Photoshop
QUESTIONS:
I see there are various clothes available, but most of them say "Genesis". Would I be able to use any clothing to put on my Sadie characters? Or am I only able to buy clothing that has Sadie's name on it?
Will anything that says Genesis apply to Sadie? For example: The Rock_it Bundle has "Genesis" poses. Will those poses work on Sadie?
I love the cartoon dragons, but I like some of the poses for the Millennium Dragon...would I be able to use those on the Toon Dragons?
I tried applying Genesis poses to the SubDragon LE and though rather funny, I saw they were at least moving the model. I'm HOPING that since Sadie is more like a human (i.e., similar to Genesis), they would work on her.
Thanks for your patience with me as I dive into this headlong and eager to learn but probably fumbling around a bit. I appreciate any advice anyone is willing to offer. Thank you!!!
Warmest regards,
Arial ;)
Comments
1 - yes you can use the Genesis clothing
2 - should if it's for Genesis
3 - no you can't use the M. Dragon poses on toon dragon
4 - yes they will work
Caution - there are two different products in store (both by 3DUniverse)! Toon Girl Sadie and Sadie for Genesis. The second is morph for Genesis, so all Genesis clothes, poses etc. will work on her. First is a separate figure - you can put on her only clothes that are made for her, and poses for other characters would not fit her either without tweaking.
Sadie the separate figure is here:
http://www.daz3d.com/3d-universe-toon-girl-sadie
The Genesis morph is here (along with her male counterpart Sam):
http://www.daz3d.com/sadie-and-sam-for-genesis
Also there is clothes and hair made specially for Genesis Sadie and Sam:
http://www.daz3d.com/sadie-and-sam-ultra-outfit
http://www.daz3d.com/sadie-and-sam-hairstylz
You can of course put any Genesis clothing and hair on them. I would advise you to get the hair, since you seem to aim for toony look and this hair is toony, while most other Genesis hair in store is more on the realistic side.
It should be noted that Toon Girl Sadie and Sadie for Genesis are two very different things. One is a whole character model, complete with her own unique wardrobe and accessories, while the other is based on Daz Studio's Genesis figure. Genesis Sadie has more human-like proportions while Toon Girl Sadie is more exaggerated and cartoon-like. It's worth noting that the old Toon Girl Sadie morphs are not transferable however, and while Genesis morphs can be applied to change the shape of Genesis Sadie, most are designed with more realistic proportions in mind so you might not get as desirable an effect.
Sadie for Genesis handily includes an autofit clone so that she can wear most of the original Toon Girl Sadie wardrobe (dresses and some shoes being a bit finicky). Here's a quick side-by side render of the two so you can better make your choice. They're both fantastic figures, so consider what you're using them for before making a decision. Toon Girl Sadie is on the left.
Moved to the Commons as it is not a Commercial product for sale.
And it should be noted that the Mae morphs are for the stand alone Sadie, not the Genesis morph Sadie. So the way I'm looking at it:
The original Stand Alone Sadie:
+ can be expanded to many characters with the Mae morph set.
- can only use clothes made for Sadie
The Genesis morph Sadie;
- can only use morphs for Genesis (Capsces (as of yet) has not released a Genesis morph set and is pretty much the "gold standard")
+can use pretty much any clothing made for Genesis, can be turned into Skullcrusher Sadie Ogre, or even Sadie Mouse if you want.
You definitely want to get the Sadie and Sam for Genesis.
http://www.daz3d.com/sadie-and-sam-for-genesis
That way you can use any of the hundred of Genesis clothing items and have them fit very easily to your Sadie and Sam characters. Plus with the inherent versatility in the Genesis platform, you'll be able to morph dozens of other characters quickly using the " tooned " genesis base.
You also want to looks at 3D universes DAZ Store's other characters to add toon variety to your Genesis lineup.
http://www.daz3d.com/3d-universe
Then there's also 3DUniverse's website that offers other addons, and freebies for his DAZ products. Definitely worth checking out.

Not necessarily, Sadie may already have the clothing for her she needs for her illustrations. And the stand alone Sadie has more "articulated" looking feet and hands than the Genesis morph. Not to mention far less memory intensive. >_< And Genesis has a weak spot when it comes to expressions that is supposedly being corrected with Genesis 2.
OMG YOU GUYS ROOOOOCK!!! Wow! So many helpful responses! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
Thanks to everyone's great guidance, I think I understand completely about the difference between Toon Girl Sadie and Sadie for Genesis. And I'm seeing that Sadie 16 is the older version of Toon Girl Sadie. I will stay away from those two for my purposes.
Am I to understand, then, that any of the products that require "3D Universe Toon Girl Sadie" will NOT work on Genesis Sadie? For example: I'm assuming "Sadie On The Move Pose Set" will NOT work on the Genesis Sadie...correct?
And...am I understanding you correctly, GhengisFarb...the Mae morph package will NOT work on the Genesis Sadie & Sam? If so, does anyone know of an equivalent option that will give me both body and face morphs to increase my character options? I would love the ability to create adult characters as well as children, as is available with the Mae package. There are soooooo many products to choose from, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. I really appreciate the guidance you all have provided and I hate to be pest. Would The Kids 4 Morphs++ work? I'm thinking "no" because it says The Kids 4 Base is needed...right? Am I starting to get the hang of this? LOL
I'm assuming Morphing Genesis 2 Female is going to be biting off more than I can chew at this time...yes?
How about the 220 Emotions for Genesis? Or will this warp Sadie and Sam's faces? Ahhhhh! LOL
With all that being said...to increase my options, I'll be using the Genesis Sadie. Here's my modified plan. How does this sound? (thanks Proxima for the links!)
--Sadie and Sam for Genesis for my base models
--Sadie and Sam Ultra Outfit to give me wardrobe options
--Sadie and Sam Hairstylz...obviously, hairstyle options
As for the dragons, I'm going for the cartoon look, as we've established, and the Millenium Dragon just looks too scary for kids. Are there ways of softening the looks of the Millenium dragon? It seems if I go with that dragon, I'll have lots of pose options...yes?
Again, thank you ALL for the wonderful information!!! I'm looking forward to fine-tuning this so I can start buying my modules. This two-year project will finally have a platform!!!!
Arial ;)
If you use Sadie and Sam for Genesis, then you have the option to dial in characters and clothing outfits through the Genesis Platform.
Jasmin, Jason, Kimberley .... and others all become available to you with a few simple clicks. The standalones, can get you there but they are not as versatile or as easy to modify. With Genesis, and both morphs loaded, you can dial a character between Sadie and Jasmin that will have elements of both, but a significantly different character. Interchange hair, interchange wardrobe. Interchange textures. All simple clicks.
Sorry...I'm slow. So what does this mean? I do have the Genesis 2 installed on my DAZ 3D Studio version of software...so does this mean when I get any of the Sadie and Sam stuff I apply it to Genesis 2? Or will all that happen automatically? Sorry if I'm being a pest.
Thanks, Bastion!!!
I can use these, right?
TreadZ for Genesis
Aging Morphs or would this mess up the toon character? I'd like to have the option of creating old people.
Okay...I'll stop bugging everyone! *grins sheepishly*

...you need to use Genesis 1 (which also should come with the Daz Studio download) for Genesis Sadie. G2F (Genesis 2) is a different figure and only the Gen6 character shapes (VIctoria6, Gia6 Girl6 and Josie6) will work with it.
As to the versatility of the Genesis Sadie I agree there is much more you can do, particularly mixing in the other 3DU Genesis Toon Characters (also handy if you need some older looking characters as well) and all the Genesis morph packs (such as the ethnic ones). You also get Sam as well so you have a male character whereas with the original Sadie you have to purchase the Sam character separately. .
If you go with the original Sadie, make sure to get the Sadie Morphs as this gives you facial morphs that do not come with the base figure and also is the base for different ethic characters as well.
There are also other 3D Stores that sell Sadie & Sam content as well a lot of Freebie support. Here is a thread that has links to a number of different free content sites for the toon kids.
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/7843/
I have the original standalone and the Genesis version (which take up a fair portion of my runtime) and use both.
You might also look at Smay's Mavka as she is a toon fey character. Again there are two versions, the original standalone (not sold here) and a Genesis version. Unfortunately unlike Sadie and Sam, clothing for the original standalone character does not work well for the Genesis version as no "clone" (required for the Autofit tool) was provided which does limit it a bit. however any clothing content that works with Genesis (including Sadie clothing) will work with the Genesis Mavka.

The thread link you provided is awesome! I'm a little confused though. It seems to be stuff related to the Toon Girl Sadie, not the Genesis Sadie...is that correct? Are you giving me more options for the Toon Girl Sadie by providing that information? Or am I misunderstanding the links in the thread?
Thank you!!!
The first link she linked to was for the original Sadie just in case you choose to go that route. I use the Genesis figure for all of my characters exclusivley but I haven't bought any of the "toon" characters. I tend to use mostly freebies, since a lot of my work has been Freebie contest entries which have a cap on paid for items. The beauty of Genesis is the ability to blend any Genesis character morph with other Genesis character morph to create a nearly infinite number of combinations, even combining "Toon" with non"toon" morphs. You could, for instance, combine Sam for Genesis with Ryuu International for Genesis to create a super cool Anime Ninja hero or Toon Yakusa baddie.
[
...yes these are more content options for the original Toon Girl Sadie.
However, any of the clothing or hair (or even poses) should work on Genesis Sadie as well, just not the skin maps (as the UV maps are different between the two) or character morphs since there is no Sadie shape for the GenerationX transfer tool (a third party plugin that allows one to transfer characters and morphs from older generation figures like Victoria4 or Aiko3 to Genesis).
...oh, and for more Genesis Toon hair there is this:
http://www.daz3d.com/nata-toon-hair-for-genesis
http://www.daz3d.com/toon-style-hair-shaders
AWESOME on the hair styles and shaders! Very kewl!!
My newbieness is kicking in again. I have no idea what skin maps and UV maps are or the difference...but let me see if I understood you correctly on all the above...
Clothing, hair and even poses for Toon Girl Sadie will still work with Genesis Sadie?? And does the GenX transfer tool kinda fix some of the issues that might pop up? Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding you. Thanks for your patience!
NINJASAUCE! This sounds awesome!!! Thanks!
You are correct - morphs and textures (and poses, I think) for Toon Girl Sadie don't work with Sadie for Genesis.
However, the clothes should be cross-compatible - so, for example, you can use the "Sadie’s Good Cook Girl" chef's outfit for Toon Girl Sadie that Elleque gives away. (The readme file says you can use this outfit in commercial work, which is why I picked it. Not all of the free items for Sadie have licenses that allow commercial work, and book illustrations definitely count as commercial.)
And, yes, that "Kids 4 Morphs ++" package is for the Kids 4 character, not for Genesis.
Don't worry about being a pest - we all remember when we were new to all of this, so we know what you're going through.

*Sigh* I was so hoping I could use Mae for the Genesis Sadie. Oh well. And I will definitely be mindful about the license issue and will read those carefully. Some of the free links took me to items that were way over my head and I'm not sure I'd know how to use them, but I haven't bought anything to work with yet, so I will probably go back to those and look.
So, will the Everyday Poses for Josie work with Genesis Sadie & Sam? It says it's compatible with Genesis 2 Female, so I'm assuming...no? Do I need to stick with compatibility specs for "Genesis" only? Gah! I'm still kinda unclear about the Genesis vs. Genesis 2.
These are all Genesis compatible, so I'm guessing these are GOOD for Genesis Sadie & Sam, yes?
--Kimberly Poses?
--Teen Angst Poses and Expressions
--Teenage Poses
--Genesis and Horse Poses
--Actions for Genesis Toon E Motions
Thanks again!!!

I've never tried using a Genesis 2 pose on the original Genesis, so somebody else will have to answer that one.
You can use the other poses you listed with Sadie for Genesis, yes.

you are trying to do to much at once - start with the basic and go from there .
learn a bit before jumping to buy every thing now .
you don't need it all now .
I appreciate the advice. I'm one of those people who dives in and researches the hell out of a topic when I'm learning something new. I want to be sure I'm making an educated decision about my purchases. I have the script of my stories written out, page by page with an exact idea of what I want to put in each scene. Right now, I'm just looking up the products to map out which items I need (e.g., bedroom, boy in bed yawning and stretching, sister pinching her nose because brother's morning breath stinks, cat or dog keeled over in the background from his bad breath - so that means, bedroom or a way to build a room, furniture, models, pets, poses, expressions, props, etc.). I want to make sure I'm not buying the wrong stuff.
I do appreciate your concern. ;)
Rock on!!! Thanks! :D

that's a lot to do if you are just learning .
I been doing this for a long time and it would be hard for me to set up that scene - maybe you learn
quick .
all the best .
Just to add more to think about, if you are planning to buy lots of content, like sets, and props, you should seriously consider a Platinum Club Membership, because the savings can be staggering. October is the annual Platinum Club anniversary, there are banners on the site showing some of the deals to be had, and the products that have the small "P" emblem on their product page can be purchased at huge discounts, in the 70%-90% off range if you're a member. Just follow the platinum club links to investigate further.
Thanks, Bastion! You read my mind! I was just looking at that last night. Thanks!!
Hi Arial,
I dont use Genesis at all, so i cant speak to its use or functionality. However, I have used Sadie quite extensively, so i can speak on her usefulness AND versatility; especially with the Mae Morphs. I am also currently involved in creating a toon story using toon figures exclusively, so i can easily visualize exactly what you're trying to do.
Personally, I prefer using the stand-alone toon figures with morph packs designed for them (if applicable) to get the same versatility as Genesis provides. To address the clothing variablity, I use "Clothing Converters". CrossDresser is my preference. With it, I can convert clothes designed for one figure, to use on the figure of my choice. Also, as mentioned most Genesis toon figures look less like "toons" and look more "realistic". This is just a personal obervation of mine.
I also think depending on how involved your stories are, you might want to consider using additional figures in this universe as well. Daz3D definitely has some toon figure to offer, but the poserverse contains a number of additional figures, that can be used in conjunction with them, you might want to explore and consider.
Another issue with the Genesis version of toons is the lack toon textures. I dont know if the lack of skin textures is an issue for you, but this was a HUGE issue for me.
One comment, that seem to be glanced over which i think needs to be considered was the resource extensiveness of the Sadie figure Versus the Sadie Morph for Genesis. You will be able to use a number of toon base figures in scene alot easier than using various Genesis figures in that same scene. I dont know how involved your story is, but from different convos Ive read, using more than 3 or Genesis figures in a scene will bring your system to a halt. Genesis users can testify or correct me if im wrong on this.
Lastly, did you know you can also use the Mae Morphs on Toon Boy Sam as well? There is a little work involved to get them to work, but nothing overly difficult. Gaining the ability to morph Sam into a number of shapes is worth the effort.
Good Luck with your project! I love to see people involved in toons!

...the issue with clothing converters is that they can be "hit or miss" depending on the mesh which means you may have to do additional adjustment in a modelling programme like Hexagon. Too much trouble especially for someone new to this. Also while the base crossdresser programme is free, the licences cost extra (Wardrobe Wizard only works on Poser).
While Genesis Autofit has it's issues (mostly with long skirts and Gen4 footwear) it works pretty well with most of the older Sadie clothing content. There is also a special tool, the SMRS Morphing and rigging tool, which helps with transferring long skirts and foootwear to Genesis. Actually since both Sadie and Genesis load in "flat footed" footwear should not be that big of an issue. It's mostly Gen4 footwear that doesn't load properly because all the Gen4 figures load with their feet pointed down instead of flat.
