Has anybody done a benchmark comparison between Iray RTX and Octane? I have seen some comparisons but they are old or using non RTX hardware.

  • Nice, you can see what is using up more vram with this plugin. Just 1 card so if you use more than one it is not going to use that card, but with intel denoiser I don't do a complete render anyway. Oh, by the way I also use the free blender octaine render and it works ok. I prefer cycles and evee more.

  • Whoohoo, this is awesome! Octane is way faster than iray. Just need to learn how to convert all my materials and environments.

Free Octane render for DazStudio,  Single GPU, but hey, it's FREE

  • Discussions merged.

  • once I got it past Windows 10 security that was painless, worked right away

Win 7 was worse it always deleted my installers

    Aye, that's the rub.

I had Octane for a long time. I paid for a licenses. It was a waste of money. Octane may be a faster renderer (I never did tests), but setting up the materials took hours and never looked right to me.

  • I had 2 licenses for DAZ studio (1.5 and upgrade to 2) I couldn't use as would not install on this PC so I am happy

I like the 4 Standalone and Carrara plugin so glad to be using it with Studio again

Yep, that's the same reason why I haven't put more time into learning Blender. It's got amazing features, but it would take me so long to get materials right (no, they do not convert well with the plugins) that it would just take me even longer to ever make anything. The free release is a good thing though.

If I could just get that Octane default Southern California sunlight in Iray, then I wouldn't even bother. But the light in default Octane just looks better to me, although the skin shaders don't look as good as Iray imo.

Mmm I guess that depends on What youre looking at. If you take a peek in my gallery, all the images are done with octane. You might also notice how my skin shaders have changed through the years as im constantly fiddling with my settings. The image they provide in the first post is terrible and I'm tempted to ask them to use one of mine lol.

I'd love to try it, but I don't have a Nvidia Graphics card (and I only found the Nvidia thing out after I tried to install the Plugin sad  ).

  • mmm came across my first case most the materials didn't work at all, Slosh's Woodsman House Bathroom.

up until now the old OrDS2 plugin and this one yesterday most diffuse maps at least loaded

I mentioned in the two threads that were deleted that I tried the plugin and found that, first off, geografts didn't have any textures (just white). After that, every render I have tried has resulted in a plain white character - completely white. I would peresevere and try to find out why they are rendering white but if geografts are not supported then there is no point.

Make sure "automatic material updates after content loads" is checked in the preferences tab.

I saw that suggestion somewhere else and I had already made sure of it. Objects and characters are still white. I'll try an uninstall and re-install but I'm not too concerned as I will not be using it without geograft support.

I must be doing something wrong. (Yeah, I know, big surprise, right?). Anyway, I log on over at the Otoy site, try the link to the Prime Free Tier downloads and only see downloads for Blender and Unreal Engine. No DAZ Studio. Am I missing something?

odd I loaded g8m anatomical elements and was able to rightclick auto materials in materials on them

no did not load automatically but neither did his hair, beard eyelashes

    anyway they work fine

am rendering a video, not sure I can link it when done, will be age restricted

    maybe check my channel later

Thanks for the hint. I tried that with the two 3rd. Party AE's I have and one worked (NGV8) and the other didn't (Meipe GP). By the way, the same Auto Materials option fixed my white figure problem. I don't know how to make it load materials initially without having to use that option though.

EDIT: And now the "automatic material updates after content loads" option works. I did re-initialise the plugin by disabling it and then re-enabling it (restarting DAZ Studio each time). So that might have fixed it. I don't know but it seems to be mostly working now. It would be nice to figure out how to get the other set of AEs to work too but I'll look for a tutorial to learn a little more about the plugin.

    How to make me angry:

    (1) Do not distribute all the files needed for the installation with the installer (cudnn dll separate download)

    (2) Tell me to manually copy something somewhere

    (3) Insist installer is run with elevated permissions and when starting Daz in user mode, tell me in-memory db could not be initialised

    ... ?

    (4) Uninstall.

Seriously developers, what are you thinking?

  • well I uploaded my video, interested to see if it gets flagged cheeky

is just a nude man but

  • I have found that 'auto materials' works on a lot of geografts, but occasionally the geograft stays white. This seems to happen if the material name on the geograft has exactly the same name as an existing material on the figure that the geograft is being applied to. Sometimes a geograft that stays white can be 'fixed' by saving the scene from DAZ, reloading that scene, and using 'use embedded data' within the octane materials interface.

Do you have any links you can share that will help us noobs get our Octane renders as close to iray as possible? A faster render engine is great but useless (depending what you're using it for) if the end result is of a lower quality or if the saved rendering time is spent playing "guess, checking and improve" shader settings etc. Any pointer in the right direction would be hugely appreciated, cheers!

Well playing around with it and I like it a lot, but have one big issue and that is clothing, for some reason it seems to displace clothing and hair which is a pain.. Must be missing something just not sure what, the image below shows what is happening.. :(  Adding footwear and well they are displaced so much to the point of the model not wearing them..

  • I found my original installation did weird stuff like that if you didn't use the textured viewport, it didn't update

    try reloading maybe

Well, from browsing around the FAQ, it needs to go online to be able use it. Hard pass for me on that crap.

    1) Although the installer doesn't come with everything you might need in the installation application, it will download and install everything for  you.

    2) The installer actually installs the file in question for you if you let it (press OK at the bottom of the window), it just enables those who prefer installing files from an external source to do it themselves. But yeah,  the wording is more than a bit confusing.

    3) This only needs to be done the first time you start DS with the plugin installed to allow authorization. After the initial authorization DS and the plugin will start without elevated privileges.

    4) I realize that Octane probably isn't for you, and I'm not trying to convince you to try it again. I just thought by responding to you post it might help others through the installation process.
